My 2017 in Lament Songs

2017 is not starting out well for me!  Which normally I would keep from all you nice people, but there is a good chance it is going to start affecting my posting schedule, so I thought I might as well tell you.  Plus, I kind of wanted to vent.

So far, each day of 2017 has been worse than the last for me.  I’m kind of scared of what’s going to happen tomorrow.

On Jan. 1 I had a tummy ache and a headache.  Which is normal for Jan. 1, I don’t drink alcohol (because it tastes yuchy!), but I do hit the snack food and sparkling grape juice a bit heavily on New Year’s Eve, which makes New Year’s Day always a bit of a challenge.

(This is me, except with sparkling grape juice instead of alcohol.  And feeling vaguely queasy the next day, instead of vomiting blood in an alley)

On Jan. 2, I forgot to have breakfast, was slammed at work and so missed lunch, and then went out to a fancy dinner with family where our orders were delayed and mine was messed up, so I ended up not eating anything for 24 hours.  Not the greatest day.

(This was me, except not at all)

On Jan. 3, yesterday, my landlord called to tell me they needed emergency access to my apartment because of a leak in the unit below.  And then called back to say they had to take up my kitchen floor to reach the pipes.  And then called back to say the problem was more extensive than expected, they may have to take up the bathroom floor too.  And then called again to say they were moving half my furniture into the unit across the hall, and did I have anywhere I could stay for the next few days because the living room/bedroom floor had to go too.

(This was not my reaction.  Because I am not as noble and enduring as Nargis)

This morning, after getting 6 hours of sleep in my parent’s guest room (thank goodness they live near by, so I was able to move in there after doing a commando raid on my poor apartment to rescue some clothes and my laptop!), I stumbled out the door for my regular commute to work and promptly got on the wrong train.  After a nice little tour of the Chicago suburbs, I made it back to the right train and the right stop and hopped off and ran over to get coffee so I wouldn’t accidentally burn down my office building or something.  And just as I got to the register, I realized that I had left my wallet in my parent’s guest room.  I must have looked pretty rough at this point, because the counter person took pity on me (Thank God!) and gave me my order for free.  Now I am going to see if I can borrow cash from my boss for lunch, and then stumble back to the guest room at the end of the day and hopefully avoid any other disasters.

(Me, by this point.  The counter guy looked nothing like Sunny Deol, but I might have been willing to marry him if he promised me safety and free coffee for life)

Anyhoo, I’m thinking there is no where to go but up, right?  But just in case the internet goes out at my parents, or their apartment burns down with my laptop inside, or I never find my wallet and slowly starve to death, I wanted to let you know why the blog posting may slow down a bit over the next few days.

  1. My garage door iced shut last night and I spent an hour with a chisel in the freezing rain trying to chip it open again. Is that song-worthy?

    • Maybe that sad song from Lucky: No Time For Love when they are separated at the end.

Or the opening credits sequence from Shivaay, but that’s more inspirational while you successfully chip away at ice.

    • It is, isn’t it? I keep trying to think “Well, in the grand scheme of things it’s not that bad, I will have a floor and a place to live again eventually, and it’s not horrible to move in with my parents for a while.” But then I think “I DON’T HAVE A FLOOR!!!!!!!”

  2. Think positive – you will have a nice new floor… But what a nightmare start to the year for you. :(. Hope you now have had something to eat! Hugs to you.

    • Thank you! My boss paid me for a sewing job I did a few months back, and I took the cash and bought myself a nice big hamburger for lunch.

  3. Here’s a possible way to ease the pain: if a lot of (in the larger scheme of things) little things happen which are super annoying and discombobulating, then maybe the gods (evil eye..whatever superstition you choose to follow; my grandmother was pretty firm about the evil eye and she was otherwise a very practical woman) won’t notice you and you will avert any really big disasters. (Now in honor of my grandmother, having said that I have to say, “stay away evil eye.”) I wish I lived nearer, cause what you need in some good food in your fridge/ freezer for emergencies like the no food day. (though that wouldn’t help the floor!) Hang in!! We’re with you.

    • That reminds me of something I’ve heard from someone (possibly my grandmother?) that is kind of the optimistic version of that. When little terrible things are happening to you, it’s because your good angel is busy arranging something big and wonderful to happen and doesn’t have time to take care of the small stuff.

Luckily, I do have an emergency pint of Ben and Jerrys in my freezer. Unluckily, my freezer is in my kitchen which HAS NO FLOOR. Oh well, maybe it won’t melt and will still be there at some point in the distant future when I get to move back home.

  4. Yikes. That is an awful way to ring in the new year. Getting displaced unexpectedly is one of the most unpleasant things to deal with. Having your daily routine upended is no fun at all. I did enjoy the song dramatizations of your situation. You’ve definitely kept your sense of humor through the rough patch! I hope that everything improves soon.

    • Right! Of course, I just spent 2 weeks with my parents over the holidays, but now I get to spend time with them in a less hectic fashion.

  5. Oh my! What a disaster! Try to think about the nice new floors you will have when you get back in. As you said yourself, it can only go up from here, right? Here’s hoping the work really does only take a few days and you’re snug at home soon!

  6. I wish you lived closer. We have a guest room — with a floor — and I finally got around to watching Sholay and would love to re-watch it with you! In fact, I just finished watching it and was still in my “OMG what a great film” mood when I read your lamentation post.

    • Yaaaaay! I’m so glad you finally watched Sholay! If you ever feel like learning every single detail about the film, Anupama Chopra’s book on it is amazing. She goes all the way from initial conception to audience reaction with in depth interviews with every artist and craftsperson involved to track the journey along the way. Plus a massive analytical section about the text of the film itself.

I am also so glad you waited until now to watch Sholay! Anyone can enjoy it, I think, without knowing anything more about the films. But you can enjoy it so much more if you are already familiar with Amitabh and song sequences and Indian society and that stuff.
