I haven’t put up a podcast in a few weeks, because there hasn’t been anything to watch for a few weeks (except Bahubali over and over and over again). But I thought it would be a good time to put up a podcast MovieMavenGal and I recorded a while back, actually the beginning of our Angamaly Diaries conversation. Especially since MovieMavenGal just started putting up her video reviews!

3-7 movies a week?!? Well now that I think about it, I watch like 3-5 movies a week so it’s not a lot 🙂

Exactly. It sounds like a lot, and then you start working it through and it’s just a new movie every Friday, and two movies on Saturday, plus maybe one more if its a long Saturday, and another Sunday afternoon, and then maybe two more during the week.

It’s not a lot really. I tend to watch like 2-3 movies during the weekend and either one or two spread out over the rest of the week.
So have you seen a Telugu movie in the theater other than either of the Baahubali movies? I know Moviemavengal mentioned that she saw Brahmotsavam (Mahesh’s last
) but I don’t think you have.

I don’t think I have either. I see more Malayalam in theaters than anything else (after Hindi) because Malayalam is sooooooooooo hard to get a hold of if you miss it in theaters. But Telugu and Tamil, usually they are available streaming and/or DVD within about 3 months, with subtitles and everything else. Plus Telugu and Tamil have those super expensive tickets, and Malayalam doesn’t. I think I have seen two Tamil films, Kabali and Kaatru whatsit, the new Mani Ratnam.

Loved the podcast, ladies! Any plans to get on iTunes?
I will be in Chicago for the ALA conference in late June. I do try to get to Devon Avenue when I’m in town, so it would be great to meet up with you guys there!

I would LOVE that! I will be all moved in by then, which means I will be one block off Devon, so any time and anywhere is good for me. I can also introduce you to my favorite movie store (in a totally selfish way, the more customers I bring them, the bigger the discounts they give me, and I am still trying to talk them down on the $69 Amar Chitra Katha).

I’ll be in touch then! I’m still working out my actual meeting schedule and other social commitments. I’ve always been with friends with cars when I’ve gone up to Devon in the past, so I might need some advice on best ways to get from downtown Chicago up there. I could do the Red Line up to Loyola and bus or uber it over, I think. Would Monday the 26th during the day (say lunchtime) be a possibility?

Shoot, during the day is tricky. I work in Evanston, which is just far enough that I can’t really drive home/to Devon for lunch. Any time after 5:30 or weekends is good. Or, if you are willing to cut down on Devon time, meeting in Evanston would also work.
For transit to Devon, red line to Loyola and then the 155 bus west is the best way. Just get off when all the desis get off, and you are right in the middle of it all. There’s like 5 other options by bus or different trains, but if you are by the red line already, red line to 155 is best.

Oh, and yes there are plans to get it on itunes, once I figure out how itunes works. I keep finding websites that say “to load your podcast on itunes is very simple, you just [tech speak tech speak tech speak]”

I forgot to ask earlier but you mentioned that a lot of your friends in college were desis right. So were they all Hrithik fans since that was around the time that he was launched?

Oh yeah! Well, Hrithik with that tinge of “but Shahrukh is who I grew up with!”. Really, it was still Khans above all. Everyone I knew broke down into “the first movie I remember seeing when I was 5 was MPK” or “the first movie I remember seeing was KKHH” or “the first movie I remember seeing was QSQT”. And that was it, like imprinting in baby birds, they were stuck for life with their first and best love.
But Hrithik was just the default, everyone knew Hrithik, everyone was into Hrithik, Hrithik came second to the Khans.
What was really different with my generation, is I think it was the first group to grow up going “Amitabh? You mean that old guy? Oh yeah, my parents talk about him”. Even just a few years older, and we would have seen some of his 80s stuff and be sentimental for him from that, but having your earliest childhood memories in the 90s, it was all Khans and Amitabh was pointless and old-fashioned.

Well, it shows the longevity of the Khans when I can easily say that my friends and I also ended up growing up with their movies. Hrithik’s pretty big too, one of my friends is a huge Hrithik fan but I’ve personally never liked him much. Everyone liked Ranbir because of YJHD but that ended shortly due to watching Tamasha being a traumatic experience 🙂

Also, I have a horrible feeling that today’s little kids think of the Khans as “those old people in those old people movies like Raees and Dangal and Sultan”. And probably Student of the Year and Humpty and YJHD are the movies they are growing up with.

I feel like the Khans are still going really strong. As long as they keep making family oriented blockbusters, there will always be kids that like them. Also I realized that a lot of little kids like Varun which I attribute to him doing colorful comedies with lots of dancing. Like Main Tera Hero, ABCD 2, Dishoom, and even Badrinath.
