Eid Mubarak! A Selection of Songs

Good news!  I found a post I did for Eid last year, so I can join in the celebrations after all.  Better late than never.  As I said last year, I am 95% sure all these songs are appropriate.  But if a miss-translated a lyric or something, and one of them is more secular than religious, let me know right away so I can pull it out of a post where it doesn’t belong.

There are lots of lovely lovely songs from the whole tradition of Muslim musical art in South Asia, so I’m going to pull a few of my favorites to listen to today.

1. This song is guaranteed to make me cry.  Like, when it comes on my ipod shuffle while I’m driving, I have to pull off the road for a bit.  Partly because of the context in the film, but also because it is just so beautiful on its own.

2. This isn’t my favorite AR Rahman song from this post, but it is a pretty good one.

3. Moimeme suggested this song last year, an actual Eid song!

4. Another one with no visuals that is just too pretty to skip.

5. And finally, my all time favorite song, another one that sometimes makes me pull over to the side of the road, but not because of anything about the film it’s in (although I like it fine), but just because the song itself is so so beautiful.

  1. I am so glad you did an Eid post! Eid is one of my favorite festivals (not just because Shah Rukh comes out and waves) but because there is such a classic feel to the whole day. Just the perspective of a non-Muslim who grew up in India, Eid felt that way.
    Also new Abram photos YAY!
(I was wondering why he was so quiet over both his 25th, and for Eid – then to find out this morning Aryan and Suhana are home from school, so he is going to be reclusive for a few days.)

    • I like that Aryan and Suhana aren’t part of the Eid pictures any more. Seems appropriate, now that they are old enough, for them to decide for themselves when and if they want to be photographed. AbRam is so young, and seems to enjoy the crowds a lot, so it’s different with him.

      • Khwaja Mere Khwaja is nothing but pure magic. Have you reviewed Jodha Akbar before? I am not able to find it on a simple search, but since your Nayagan post, I have given up on finding your posts via google.
(this is a very rude, unsubtle way of me asking for a masterpost/index, but I can imagine how much of a task that would be).

        • SUCH A HUGE TASK!!!! I try periodically, but it’s really really hard. It’s a stupid wordpress programming error thing, adding a link for some reason takes them like 5 minutes to process, it is sooooooooooo slow. So I could come up with the list of every movie review ever in only like 5 hours of effort. But then adding in the links to make it functioning would take like 60 hours or something, because every time I have to sit there for 5 minutes waiting for wordpress to crank through and understand what I want.

Oh, and no “real” Jodha-Akbar post, but I did a post comparing J-A and M-E-A back before Bajirao came out. If you use the site search function for Bajirao or Mughal-E-Azam, that might be simpler. J-A and some other movies are also hard to find, because the spelling is so inconsistent. Half my Bahubali posts are “Bahubaali”, for instance. Not my fault, the filmmakers themselves seem to have changed their mind on spelling between part 1 and part 2. And the same with J-A, half the time you see it with extra “a”s thrown in there.

          • Oh God I see what you mean about the Bahubali spelling, i mean for god’s sake, why filmakers, why?

And yes, I understand! Question – do you also have a tumblr blog/or thought about having one? Sometimes I miss the simple tagging system on tumblr. Or is WordPress easier for how wordy some of the posts can get?

          • WordPress is the best in almost every other way, except the stupid delay on links. One of the things they do for me is let me post automatically to facebook, tumblr, and twitter. So I should be over there too. No idea of the tagging will work though, since it is just carrying over info from WordPress.
