Happy Teacher’s Day (in India)!

Okay, how many Teacher’s Days ARE there?!?!?  I already did the American/International Teacher’s Day, and Guru Purnima (click the links if you feel the need to review former teacher songs), and now there’s ANOTHER Teacher’s Day?  Just for India?  Thank goodness there are so many teacher songs! (this is an updated and reposted post from last year)

1. I’ve been resisted using Tare Zameen Par for one of these things, because I find Aamir in clown clothes terrifying.  But I forgot that in addition to “Bum Bum Bole”, this song is also an option.

2. My favorite part of Mohabbatein!  Stop reading if I’ve told this story before, but one time ages ago I was shopping in my favorite Indian DVD store, the place was mobbed (it was during a Diwale sale), and this part came on the store TV and everyone stopped dead for like 30 seconds to watch Shahrukh drumming, and then went back to chatting and browsing and checking out and so on.

3. This is really more of a Guru Purnima song than a Teacher’s Day song, but I missed it back in July, so I am putting it in now.  And it does work, right?  Because Amitabh plays Farhan’s teacher/Guru in the film, and the way they vibe together recording the song definitely feels like a Guru/student relationship.

4. Why didn’t I use Gabbar is Back before?  Oh right, because I wanted to use Desi Boyz instead, and that used up my Akshay quotient.

5. So long as I am thinking outside the box I little, I should acknowledge Salman’s real life teaching, all his little mentees that have gone on to success.  They certainly make a point to acknowledge him when they get a chance!

6. I just triple-checked, and I actually haven’t used this song before for the other Teacher’s Days!  Kind of stunning, because it is one of the best teacher songs!

    • By “the addition”, you mean the Main Hoon Na scenes, right? Those are my first thoughts always for “Teachers Day” and I just assumed that was true for everybody!

  2. I am writing this as I sit in my classroom grading papers after the students left. Unfortunately, there is no soundtrack playing in the background and no one to dance with (“with whom to dance” – don’t end a sentence with a preposition!).

  5. Guru Purnima is being celebrated since ages and it comes on full moon day in Ashadha month (June-July). Teacher’s day is a newbie from the past 60 years and it falls on September 5th, the birth date of teacher and former president of India, Radhakrishnan. A guru imparts spiritual knowledge while a teacher imparts academic knowledge.

    • Not to be pedantic but a guru is anyone you care to learn anything from. Tying it to spirituality really diminishes the spirit of the term and what it stands for. A teacher is a guru that comes to you and a guru is a teacher you go to yourself. So teacher is sort of a stage 1 guru.

      • Asmita, I am talking about gurus in the context of guru purnima. Of course in Hollywood movies we can see even love gurus. Friends also call each guru and we know what they learn from each other.

        By the way Margaret, your website has only ‘Like’ buttons. I would like to see ‘dislike’ or downvote buttons so that I can come back and dislike Asmita’s comment 😁

        • Even in the context of Guru Purnima alone, the academic end of learning cannot be treated as any less. When you do that you’re downgrading Vyasa which isn’t fair.

          And maybe as a country we NEED to move away from spiritual teachings for a while and just focus on basic academics for a few years. #RIPGauriLankesh

          • I have respect for gurus such as Vyasa and also I haven’t mentioned having less respect for academics.

            Your mentioning of Gauri Lankesh – I am not sure if you are equating the killers with spiritualists. They are just religious fanatics.

            Spiritualism (search for Truth or Brahman as done by Gandhi), not religion is what defines India since ages. Spiritualism is the control tower. We should never lose contact with it while we adventure in academics, be it micro biology or space technology.

          • Nope, not equating terrorists with spiritualists. But given the current state of spiritualists and their business model in our country, one can only wish for a move away from it all. Just a wish. For more actual peace.
