Happy Wednesday! Halfway through the work week, very exciting. Also the last day I get to have coffee (following my own rules that allow coffee on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday but no more because then I stop sleeping). So, enjoy “perky Margaret” today and prepare yourself for “depressed and energyless Margaret” tomorrow.
I’ll start!
Reading: Not much! I’m having a hard time focusing on reading, I’m in more of a watching mode this week.
Watching: Wild Wild Country, Father Brown‘s new season, Call the Midwife new season, and so on.
Thinking: Well, now I am depressed and dogless again. I had a good 4 days of being happy and busy, but now I am ready for a new dog. A better dog. A BIGGER dog.
Now, question for you! Last night I saw Raid again in theaters. What is the most recent movie you remember which was so good you were excited to see it a second time?
A Gentleman springs to mind for me. Also Tumhari Sulu, which I wasn’t able to see again in theaters or to this day (come to think of it). Why isn’t it available streaming yet? And Ashta Chamma, yesterday’s Telugu film, I am excited to see again with my sister next time she is in town.

Yes! She is actually really conscientious about that. Gets furious with me if I accidentally give away the ending of things. But she figured it out because there is only one play that fits the “I was obsessed with it for 3 years” description.

Watching – watched love per square feet on Netflix. I read a lot of mixed reviews of it. But I really liked it. I laughed out a lot. It also has 2 of my fav actresses Ratna Pathak Shah and Supriya Pathak. Love ❤️
It’s a strange combination of realistic (The desperation & struggle to buy some space for oneself, family, falling in love) and unbelievable (silly things like auto driver waiting for you finish talk – does not happen!! Unrealistic cliche ott female boss ).
Thinking – when will spring arive ? It’s snowed in April. Why do countries not take climate change seriously and act on it. Wouldn’t it be a waste if human beings become extinct because we were too stubborn to act when we had the chance?
Waste in terms of all the developments in technology. All the art. All the love. All for nothing? Hmm.

I can tell you why it snowed today! Nothing to do with Climate Change (although that is real). It’s because I put all my winter clothes in storage and got out my summer clothes this weekend. Guaranteed way to bring on a cold snap.

I forgot to answer your question. I haven’t watched a movie in a long while that I wanted to repeat. I’m still stuck with BB2, OSO, Bangalore days etc for rewatching. In shows I rewatched Stranger Things. I absolutely love it!!

I hated Tanu Weds Manu, I just didn’t understand why everyone was in love with Kangna1 – she was soo high handed. TWM2 was a bit better because of Datto – but still don’t understand why it became such a big hit.

I’m halfway through The Flying Jatt on Netflix — and I actually like it! Tiger has a odd look, though. His face is so smooth, like he never has to shave.
Also, am I the only one that thinks he sort of looks like Keanu Reeves?

Reading: I finally finished all the Rex Stout books and am now diving into the Agatha Christies, which I am enjoying much more.
Watching: I had to watch a film to decide if it should be included for a film festival. It was so dire that I couldn’t even finish it, though I wanted to, to give it a fair shot. But since I kept stopping every 10 minutes, it didn’t bode well. Now I have to return all the dvd’s I borrowed from the library, and have kept for several weeks, tomorrow. Oh boy, Bang Bang and Aurangzeb are really different movies! Bang Bang is just super stupid and fun. But Aurangzeb is actually interesting with some really good performances. From what I know of your taste, I would lean towards Aurangzeb for you. I’ll make it simple, Bang Bang lets you watch Hrithik and Katrina “act” for 3 hours. Aurangzeb lets you watch Jackie Shroff, Amrita Singh, Rishi Kapoor, Prithviraj, Swara Bhaskar, Tanvi Azmi, Anupam Kher, and Deepti Naval. Along with Arjun Kapoor in probably his all time best performance.

Oh, for your question, the film I was most excited to see a second time in theaters was Bahubali 1. While I saw the second one three times, I wasn’t excited about that. I was more repeat watching to see why I wasn’t excited, the way I was for part one. The most recent film I wanted to rewatch in the theater was Tiger Zinda Hai, but I honesstly can’t remember if I actually did so or not. 🙂

Watching-I caught first 10 mins of Neha Dhupia’s chat show BFFs by Vogue on Voot app. It is similar to KwK but less pretentious. The star comes with a BFF. The one I saw had Deepika with her sister Anisha. The first few mins had the camera fully focused on Deepika while questions(nothing scandalous)are thrown at her.Her expressions as she struggles to think & give a good answer are fun to watch & had me thinking Deepika isn’t a spontaneous, carefree girl at all.
She thinks & thinks. I plan to watch the full thing whenever I get some time. There’s also one episode with KJo & Shweta Bachan as his BFF. I was thinking she’s his BFF, really?
To answer your question,unless it’s a grand spectacle movie, I can’t bother to go to theatre. Especially when I have to arrange for babysitters, plan kids’ schedules etc. Or it has to be a girls night out & hubby volunteers the kids’ care. And after all that effort, noway it will be a rewatch.

When I was growing up, the cheap second run theater was two blocks from our house. Which was such a blessing, so we could afford family movie nights because the tickets were so cheap, and we could just walk over after dinner. So what I am saying is, find a cheap second run theater and move so you live next to it.

And I can absolutely believe Shweta is Karan’s BFF! In his autobiography, he talks about playing with her as a child, she used to complain to him about her horrible little brother.

My guess is that Shweta and Twinkle are his oldest friends that he is still in constant contact with today, Shahrukh is his most intense friendship that is really more like family, and Manish Malhotra is his every day friend. Karan seems to have really complicated and deep friendships, I could believe his internal “BFF” list changes day by day. Similar to when I was 8 and my group at the lunch table used to give each other daily updates on our friend rankings.
And my real guess is that out of Shweta, Twinkle, Manish, and Shahrukh, Shweta was the one interested and available to do the show. Which is interesting on its own! She has tended to hide from the lime light for most of her life, but it seems like in the past 5 years or so she has started to really embrace it. Either because that’s where her personal journey is, or prep for launching her daughter?

I was the most excited to rewatch Baahubali and JHMS
Last week I didn’t finish even one movie. But now I’m watching Kamal Haasan in Punnagai Munnan, and few days ago I started Kaatru Veliyidai. I loved Aditi Rao Hydari (so pretty!) but I hated the main guy, and I don’t want them to be together, so I don’t know if I want to finish it. Should I?
Reading: nothing special, besides few articles about film industry e.g about Vijay Devakonda, and now I’m thinking if I liked what he said. What’s your opinion about actors who say they are doing films only for money? On the one hand , as long as they are good it shouldn’t matter, but on the other, I don’t like this attitude. Maybe because it makes me think about actors like the guy from Mukkabaaz (Vineet Kumar Singh) who dedicate everything for the passion of acting, often without results.

Have faith in Ratnam! He didn’t set out to make a love story with Kaatru, he set out to make a story of redemption. The hero is supposed to be a bad boyfriend and generally an aggressive violent person. He has to go on a journey of self-improvement. Also, the songs are amazing, so it’s almost worth watching just for that.
I like actors who approach acting as a job, not a hobby, which means they have to take scripts for money sometimes. Or at least consider money. But then the other side of that is, actor or no actor, I respect people who take pride in their work. So take a script for money, but do the best job you can to really make something of your character and be part of the best film you can be a part of.

Angamaly Diaries was the last film I saw that I really wanted to see again soon. But I ended up watching it on my small computer screen and I have yet to find a copy on DVD so I can enjoy it on a bigger screen:(
Reading: Still reading (and loving) Americanah, also another Maiden Lane romance novel in that series (it had a Batman-esque hero in 18th century London).
Watching: Padmaavat (commented on last Wednesday post, I think) and also finally saw Secret Superstar (it was very nice but a bit trite and predictable…I enjoyed Nil Battey Sannata much better as a depiction of mother and daughter conflict and love). Aamir Khan didn’t annoy me as much as I expected, like his OTT roles usually do. I especially enjoyed the hilarious scene where he flirts with the receptionist at the lawyer’s office…it was such a quirkier comic moment that you don’t often see. Rewatched the two seasons of One Day At a Time…still made me bawl in the last finale episode. Also watching random tv episodes (Suits, Splitting Up Together, Barry, Big Bang, John Oliver, the new Queer Eye…that kind of thing).

I wish the trailers hadn’t spoiled that receptionist moment. Instead of feeling like a delightful surprise, it felt like “oh right, I’ve seen this ten million times in the ads already”.

Watching–new season of Death in Paradise–yay! Though the murders/characters of the week aren’t very compelling so far.
I saw JHMS in the theater 3 times–very unusual for me. I saw it with joyomama, but I can’t remember if we watched it together once or twice! I loved Thor:Ragnarok so much I dragged my family to see it again. It was just perfectly aimed at a child of the 80’s like me, and was beautiful enough (in a superhero movie kinda way) to see again on a big screen. I’d LOVE to see Wrinkle In Time in theaters again–it’s also impactful in the theater in a way it won’t be at home–but won’t have a chance unless it stays in theaters another few weeks.

Oh and I saw FAN in the theater twice. The story (and Aryan’s hotness) was worth going back for, and I wanted to see the last confrontation, Gaurav’s fall, and the epilogue once more on the big screen.

I think we saw JHMS twice; once with a group of your friends and once just us. I think I have watched it 12 times now, and am ready for another re-watch because I have been listening to the soundtrack and it has that effect on me. I saw Fan five times in the theater, twice in rapid succession because it was so interesting and complicated I was obsessed with it. And for both films, I waited impatiently for the DVD and streaming versions to be available.

I saw Fan 4 times I think, but I wasn’t exactly “excited”. It is such a dark movie, it was hard to make myself go back to that world. But then on the other hand, it was such a brilliant movie that I just had to see it over and over again.

BBC/Netflix must have all their shows on the same schedule, new Father Brown at the same time as new Death in Paradise.
JHMS was one I considered listing, but the thing is, I WASN’T excited to see it a second time. I was mildly curious and willing to go if a friend wanted to go. But it was after that second time that I started to get really excited to see it a 3rd time.

Reading: My Antonia, for my book group. It’s set in Nebraska (my home state) and it is a re-read for me, but it really is a beautiful story.
Watching: I watched Secret Superstar, and enjoyed it, especially the kids and the mom parts. I get what Margaret disliked about it, but am glad I got to see it. Still debating with myself about Padmaavat, but I am super busy lately so it just may not happen soon.
Thinking: I am working on a couple of writing projects, which is why I have been so absent lately. I am also spending too much time deciding what to do about a high-maintenance friend who is fine in small doses but sometimes drives me nuts.

Reading: nothing, I’ve gotten so bad about that. I used to devour books but now I don’t have the bandwidth.
Watching: Mr. India which is cute but it’s three hours and 15 minutes long! Which means of course I’m just slowly chipping away at it in the evenings. First film where I found young Anil Kapoor attractive.
Thinking: I wish I were over this damned cold already! I’ve been flattened for the past three days.
For rewatching, I find myself rewatching Hum Aapke Hain Koun over and over. Not the whole thing but when I feel crappy and need to soothe myself I’ll watch a bit of it and feel better.

Hum Aapke Hain Koun is the perfect movie when you are really sick. Partly because you can fall asleep in the middle and wake up an hour later and pick right back up with the same characters and situation and all that. I would also recommend Manam, except I’ve gotten mixed reviews from the other people here I have recommended it to, so now I am nervous.
I am very excited that you are finding young Anil attractive! This brings us one step closer to getting you to watch Lamhe!!!! And then maybe Tezaab (were you the one who was just saying you don’t have a feel for young Madhuri? Either way, you should still watch Tezaab).
If you ever feel the need to take a break from looping Hum Aapke Hain Koun, Jab Harry Met Sejal is another really good looping movie. It gets better every time you watch it. But it isn’t quite as soothing and filling as HAHK, nothing is.

Watching a movie is a huge event for me these days – need to find a babysitter, and the husband is doing his MBA which means he is out on most weekends so I pass on most, except if the grandparents are in town. The only two movies I’ve watched twice are Bangalore Days – saw it once my friends, and then with the husband and I loved it both times! And then Alaipayuthey which I loved more!
Reading – just started on Anuja Chauhan’s “Those Pricey Thakur girls” , hoping its a fun read.
Watching – Rewatched my favorite movie Anuraga Karikkin Vellam and “The Switch” – was a cute movie. Very impractical but very sweet 🙂

I have so much to tell you about! I watched a bunch of Telugu movies during the past month. The movie that I liked the most was Tholi Prema starring Varun Tej and Raashi Khanna. It was so cute! I feel like Tholi Prema is this year’s version of Fidaa for me, and Varun Tej is quickly becoming another favorite.
I also saw Rangasthalam this past weekend but it wasn’t as good as I was expecting it to be. It was too violent/intense in the second half and the movie was too long. But it was a decent one-time watch. Ram Charan, Samantha, Anasuya, and the rest acted really well. I wouldn’t say you need to watch it but if you’re interested, you should probably check it out in a week or two.
The most recent movie that I was excited to see a another time would be Tholi Prema but I actually didn’t get to see it another time in the theater because it left. I think the only movies that I was excited to see multiple times in the theater were Baahubali 2, Badrinath Ki Dulhania, and Fidaa.

3 movies to be excited about enough to see twice in the theater in one year is really good! I would say 2017 was a good Niki year.
I heard good buzz about Tholi Prema, but I think it released with a bunch of other stuff (maybe Padman and something Malayalam?) so I wasn’t able to see it in theaters. I’ll have to track it down streaming, probably on einthusan since it’s not going to be anywhere else.

It was a disappointing year in terms of movies made by favorite actors except for BKD but it was a really good year overall! I think I ended up seeing Baahubali 2 three times in theaters. Actually 3.5 if you count that one time I sneaked into the theater after watching another movie.
Tholi Prema came out the weekend of Valentine’s day and it did well enough that I was able to see it in theaters a month after it came out. Yeah, it ended up clashing with Padman. It’s a pretty standard rom-com but it’s a really cute movie! I’ll definitely let you know when it shows up on streaming. For now, here’s my favorite song from the movie:

Thinking: Very excited to see on the news yesterday that Dangal is getting what passes for a big theatrical release in these parts. I’ve told you already that Japanese people really don’t get into movies that much in comparison with the rest of us, but very occasionally one that is releasing in theaters will get a spot on the breakfast show. So yesterday as I’m eating breakfast, who should I see but Aamir! He didn’t actually come to Japan, but they showed a clip of him and two professional wrestlers did some sort of schtick with a cutout of him in Dangal mode. They love Aamir here because they loooved Three Idiots, although it is still not available on any streaming service I’m subscribed to and I still haven’t seen it. So it may come to the big theater here and stay for more than one week, which would be festive.
Watching: Well, nothing. Yesterday I was having a really bad day (which seems to be going around) and planned a big treat which was watching the original Bengali Shaheb, Bibi aur Golam, the forerunner to the Guru Dutt Sahib, Biwi aur Ghulam, and then drive myself crazy trying to figure out if I love Uttam Kumar more than Guru Dutt, and then when I started watching the subtitles were just incomprehensible, and I thought I could power through because I already know the story, but I just couldn’t. The subtitles look like about half each sentence is appearing and I wonder if there was some technical issue.
After I finished that paragraph I realized Guru Dutt didn’t direct SB aur G, but I think it’s the best way to identify it.
As mentioned, I don’t see many movies in the theaters, but I definitely thought seriously abut rewatching Bahubali 2, although it would have meant taking an afternoon off work.

Watched both Padmaavat and Badrinath ki Dulhania on Amazon/Netflix this week, 9. Really interesting juxtaposition and comparison of two movies handling controversial feminist topics in almost opposite ways.

Wow, you are right! One about a woman who gives up her life to marry the man she loves, the other about a woman who gives up the man she has come to love in order to follow her life dreams.

I finally watched Guru and I really liked it! I know I should have been expecting the romance to be good since it’s Mani Ratnam but I ended up being surprised by how much I enjoyed the romance! I was also surprised by how many songs I had heard before because I never realized how popular the soundtrack was. I should really listen to your recommendations more because you tend to know what I would like 🙂

I honestly liked Aishwarya and Abhishek’s romance more but I was expecting the opposite going in to the movie.

I agree. Vidya and Madhavan’s romance was lovely, but Aish and Abhi’s was solid and strong and longlasting.

Exactly.
Was it just me or were Abhishek and Aishwarya aging too quickly? I felt like the timeline and the aging were kind of off in the movie.

Yes, definitely, Vidya aged from 10 to 30 (maybe) over the course of the film, and yet Abhishek and Aish seemed to age from more like 20 to 60.
