Soothing Songs Post to Cool Us All Down

Hello!  Two comments sections got mildly heated this morning (well, heated for this website where everything is generally at 40 degrees Fahrenheit, so going up to even 45 feels hot), so I want to put up a nice soothing post to calm us all down.  Mostly calm me down, because I hate replying to/reading semi-heated comments!  And also it’s Monday morning and my office is maybe the busiest it has been in 2 months.

A classic song, one I used to listen to every night before going to sleep in college.  By 40 seconds in, you will feel your heart rate slow. (“Nahin Samne” from Taal)

Another one, that makes all your worries feel so light they will float away.  Love or hate the film, the music is beautiful. (“Hawayein” from Jab Harry Met Sejal)

Another love song that also gives you that floating and world dropping away feeling. (“Teen Gawah” from Mirzya)

When I was little, my Mom used to give me a “bad thoughts shampoo” sometimes, massaging my head until all the bad thoughts came out.  Which is essentially what Johnny Walker is promising with his oil massage in this song.  (“Sar Jo Tera Chakraye” from Pyaasa)

Setting aside the ridiculous costumes and locations of this song, I find the music really beautiful and also (what little I can get of) the meaning of the lyrics.  There are miracles everywhere. (“Poovukkul” from Jeans)

Another very new one.  Which I think just one a national award?  Anyway, listening to it always inspires me to try yoga deep breaching, that’s what the refrain feels like, like I am supposed to inhale and exhale on each word. (“Vaan” from Kaatru Veliyidai)

That was a snowy deep slow breathing song, this is a sunny relax your muscles and smile song. (“Kuttanadan Punjayile” or the “Kerala Boat Song” sung by Vidya Vox)

While we are in Malayalam songs, here is another one I find incredibly soothing, written in Malayalam although not set in Kerala (“Dubai”).

Here is a song which is truly the only good part of the movie, and yet is so good it almost makes the whole movie worth it. (“Tu Hai” from Mohenjo Daro)

And finally my all time most soothing song, you can just close your eyes and sail away on it, and then open them to find everything seeming much smaller and calmer. “Hoshwalon Ko Khabar Kya” from Sarfarosh)

    • I love Pehla Naasha! Isn’t it interesting how many “intoxication of love” songs kind of overlap with “intoxication of a really really good meditation session” feeling? Back when I took yoga, I definitely had times when I would leave feeling all floaty and in slow motion.

  2. Oh Mirzya, how I love this movie! Teen Gawah is beautiful, I know what you mean with floating feeling, but to cool me down Aave Re Hitchki is even better.

    • It’s also a good yoga breathing practice song! You can do your slow inhale and exhales to “Vaan” and then practice your rapid inhalations with “Hichki”.

  3. Kuttanadan Punjayile” or the “Kerala Boat Song” is an old Malayalam film song which is popular across generations. Vidya Vox version is a remix song. IMO it should have been renamed as the “Drunken Party Anthem by Malayali Men Everywhere”.

    • But it’s so pretty and light! How could it be a drunken men song?

      • Because that’s where it’s often heard.Nevermind that the song is actually about a winning team bringing the trophy home after a boat race and asking the womenfolk to receive them with much fanfare.
