Saturday Small Talk:Why I Didn’t See Parmanu and What I Did Instead

Did you notice that this Saturday hasn’t had the traditional spoiler and no spoiler reviews of the new Hindi release?  There’s a reason for that!  Oh, and this is also the “Saturday Small Talk” post I am trying out.  If you have anything you want to share about news stories, movies you’ve watched, anything at all, throw it out here.

See, it’s really really hot here.  And when it’s hot, my brain stops working.  Partly because I don’t get any sleep.  My apartment takes about 2 hours after sundown to cool, and then heats up half an hour after the sunrises, which cuts my comfortable sleep time down to about 5 hours.

(Suraj hua no sleep)

So at 2 in the afternoon yesterday, I had a sudden realization that I just could not face dragging myself to a long thought provoking movie, then dragging myself home to my apartment at midnight, just when it is finally cool, to force myself to stay up another 2 hours and write a review.

(Like Sanjay, only instead of visions of my wife cheating on me, it’s visions of complex socio-political statements made through cinema)

And then spend my whole Saturday writing another review, meaning all the things I really needed to do like groceries (I was down to 2 hardcooked eggs and half a cup of milk in the fridge last night), and finally installing my air conditioner so I could sleep through the night, would have to be pushed to another day.

(WAQT! the race against time!  Blogger edition, much less colorful and exciting, much more eating food you can scrounge from the back of the fridge because you spent 6 hours typing instead of shopping/cooking)

And it’s a 3 day weekend.  Which means the whole 3 days would be overshadowed by the deep depressing thought provoking film that I have to keep chewing over in my head, and writing about, and talking about in the comments, and BLEH!

(Moving through life, joylessly, haunted by memories of the movie I saw on Friday)

So instead, last night we went to see a big stupid crazy fun Telugu movie and laughed and cheered for 3 hours straight.  And then I came home and went to sleep on the living room couch (only room with a full cross breeze) and actually got 8 hours of sleep.

(I didn’t have Shahrukh singing to me and patting my head, but it was still a pretty nice sleep)

And this morning I woke up and wrote a nice Sanjay Dutt post and then took the dog for a very short walk (she feels the same way about hot weather that I do, match made in heaven!).  And then actually installed the air conditioner, finally.  After first being stymied by a wasp which flew in as soon as I raised the screen and then couldn’t figure out how to get out again.

And then I was stymied again by the realization that the window is wider than the air conditioner and I needed duct tape (I don’t know why I tried to do anything around the home without it).  So, off to the store!  After first placing a pizza order for pick up in an hour as my reward (too hot to cook!).  I picked up ice cream, peanut butter for the dog, and also boring stuff like milk.  And duct tape.  And then, my greatest triumph, came home with just enough time to throw the groceries in the fridge before running off and arriving at the pizza place exactly one minute before my order was ready.

(As peanut butter is to Dog Hazel, so is Paan to Don Shahrukh)

Back to the apartment with my pizza and duct tape.  And, finally, I sealed off the a/c window and turned it on.  And then called the dog in so we could both collapse in ecstatic coolness as our core temperatures dropped down to a normal level.

(I’m doing the same thing on my slightly bigger bed.  Also, does she still need to lose weight?  I can’t decide if she is actually skinnier, or just feels skinnier because I’ve gotten used to her chubbiness)

And now I am sitting on the bed eating pizza straight from the box and finally, for the first time in a week, actually feeling like going to sleep.  Sleep, which will be unsullied by complicated thoughts about a complicated movie, or guilt over sleeping instead of writing about that movie.

(This kind of dream.  Don’t need it!)

  1. I’m glad you got your AC installed and can look forward to restful nights. Let this be a lesson to you. Only last weekend you were complaining about the rain. 🙂

I’ve only been skimming the Paramanu reviews (for fear of spoilers). While they’ve been very positive for both the film and John’s performance, I didn’t see anything to make it seem like such a dark and disturbing film. And even if it is, you’d only have to think about it for a day or so before your Memorial Day silly film kicked in. 🙂

Are you going to keep the title of the Telugu film secret till your review appears? 🙂

    • It was just Nela Ticket. Which got terrible reviews and didn’t have many people in the audience, but was exactly the kind of big dumb movie I wanted.

      • I looked up the reviews for Nela Ticket out of curiosity, and they were pretty dire. I’m sorry this had to be your big screen experience with Ravi Teja, who deserves a better show case. However, reading about the themes of the film, I wonder if you want to do a compare and contrast type of review on it with Bharat Ane Nenu. 🙂

        • Really, it was the perfect film. It was Dina’s first big screen Telugu experience, she was worried about not being able to grasp themes or missing stuff becasue she didn’t have the background, and then it was such a light silly movie there was nothing to miss.

And yes, I was fascinated with the contrast with Bharat Ane Nenu, and in general Ravi Teja’s attitude towards his onscreen persona (not afraid to make fun of himself) versus Mahesh Babu (always perfect)

    • No, I never watch film Companion. In case I don’t get 16 minutes to watch this, what does it say?

      • This is the interview that Angie was referring to in the Wednesday thread. There was an article link there with the transcript of the interview.

      • Bobby says that when he was younger he never had to go out and ask for work, work came to him. But then the industry changed around him and no one was offering him anything and it took him years to realize that he would have to go out and ask for work if he didn’t want his career to come to an early end. He gets very emotional and cries at one point describing how he didn’t want to disappoint his children and how hard it was from physical standpoint to make a comeback. He also talks about his friendship with Salman and how Bhai helped him get back into acting.

Just curious, why don’t you watch Film Companion?

        • Oh, time. And also I am worried about accidentally using someone else’s ideas as my own. I used to read all the reviewers and stuff but since I started blogging, I didn’t have the time to do it and I also got worried about losing my original thoughts when I read theirs. I still read books and stuff, it’s just the day by day updates that I’ve dropped off my reading list.

So I rely on all of you to keep me informed!
