Amrish: such amazing anger eyes! Im always waiting for them to pop right out of his head.
Madhuri: i wanted a still from Kay Sera Sera, she does this amazing eye play at the beginning that really shows her classical dancer training to control the whole face.
Dog Hazel and chocolate heroes have remarkably similar “i love you and am silently begging you to pet me” looks

Am I right that classical Indian dance/drama includes specific eye movements? I wonder if that is why so many Indian actors seem to use their eyes as part of their body language, not just to emote, but to communicate (if that difference makes sense)?
It works wonderfully on film, there was a big deal when Griffith invented the close up in the West because none of the strange trained actors knew how to emote with just their face instead of their whole body. But all of these Indian dance trained people can tell a whole story just with their eyes.
(Also, how dare you sneak in a photo of Aish???? After I have so carefully excluded her from all my TGIF’s of all time! For no particular reason, I just feel like there are too many photos of her in the world)

Imagine Aradhya reading this & thinking ‘now why didn’t Margret include my mom,why, why wd she do that when mom has such pretty eyes, does she hate my mom?’ & then looking at you with her big adorable eyes(Aradhya has pretty eyes too). Do u want to be answering uncomfortably to an 8 year old ? Now at least you can redirect her to the comments section.
Eyes are supposedly as important, if not more than the mudras & steps in the classical Indian dance forms. But even in real life, when you try to gauge someone, don’t we look at their eyes assuming eyes are the windows to the soul & all & see the pain/evil/mischief/love in their eyes? So I would think a good performer should be able to reflect what the character is going through via the eyes primarily & then through the rest of the bodily aspects of it.

Suriya is awesome! I’ve only seen him in 3 movies, but they were all really good.
None of them straight rom-coms, which I think of as “your” genre. But then,t hat’s horribly reductive, isn’t it? We can all contain multitudes. If you feel like a light fun adventure/sci-fi film with ridiculously happy ending, you can check him out in 24. And for a very angsty Devdas-like romance with great music, try to track down Vaaranam Aayiram.

Kakka Kakka, of which Force was a remake of-is the movie to watch for Surya. Also Pithamagan, which has Vikram also in an award winning role. The movie itself is a bit disturbing, dark but the performances are superlative. Oh and you must be knowing that Suriya is the original Ghajini & Singham.

I think the top Tamil heroes don’t go for straight up rom-coms. Most of his movies have good romance tracks like Ghajini, VA, Kakka, Ayan etc but cannot be categorised as romances. There’s Sillunnu Oru Kadhal where he plays a lovable hubby & focuses solely on the romance with his wife & college sweetheart. It is a bit too cheesy for my liking but pleasant enough.

I do love rom-coms and I’m always looking out for good ones (but they only represent 1/4 of my Indian DVD collection…though a much larger percentage do have some romantic element to them…this is Indian film after all!) Watched The Beguiled today (not impressed) and now watching Raazi…

Most of the frontline Tamil/Telugu actors have a specific persona to live up to & their audiences are spread out. So they try to include something of everything in their movies-bit of romance, bit of drama, bit of comedy & mostly action. So it befalls the second/third line actors to partake in full length romances.It would be great to see actors like Suriya or Vikram do a full length romance but that’s just not going to happen.Suriya at least has Vaaranam Aayiram & Sillunnu Oru Kadhal. Were you able to watch any of the Telugu/Tamil movies that I had suggested earlier?

There is a gaping hole in this list where Fawad Khan belongs. He brings his sexy-in-love eye game full bore in Humsafar. Maybe he’s not Indian but he’s been in Indian film, so that should be what qualifies him.
I’m the opposite of a Salman Khan fan, but even I would readily admit that young Bhai’s eyes are Perfection. God didn’t break the mold with this one… She *used* the original mold in making his eyes. Even middle aged Bhai eyes aren’t bad.
Rani’s eyes take really well to the colour, contour, and definition provided by makeup. That’s not meant to be a diss. She looks so gorgeous in eye makeup, and eye makeup looks so great on her, that photos of her inspire me to pull out my smokey eye kit and do my best work. She could easily model for a cosmetic brand and inspire people to purchase.
Shashi kapoor eyes are also very soulful.
Kareena kapoor also has large beautiful eyes.
That Madhavan gif wins the internet. Whoever taught Maddy to be so sexy should teach those skills to the rest of mankind so that us ladies can each have our share.
Salman wins most beautiful eyes, but Sridevi wins most expressive eyes. She (and Lucille Ball, the other actor with huge expressive eyes) could have an entire film just pictured on their eyes, and we would completely understand the movie.
PCs eyes are big and brown, but not colored. Though she does wear colored contacts as a fashion accessory. It’s not uncommon among Delhiites to do so. Sucks for me because everyone thinks I’m wearing colored contacts nowadays.
Aishwarya has stunning eyes – both the colour and the shape. But they lack soul and expression. It’s not uncommon for ppl to think that people with colored eyes are cold and nonemotive, and ppl with brown eyes are warm and expressive. Somehow, brown eyes look like they are gazing at you, and colored eyes look like they are taking your gaze.

Speaking of Rekha and Dancer Eyes, they were also super useful in helping her fake dancing. I don’t think she ever had any real training, but she was able to master the eye work in such a way that she convinced us she could dance.

The thing about Fawad is, while coming close, he isn’t quite a “Puppy eyes” guy. More of a “full grown powerful intelligent working dog who is considering allowing you to be his master” kind of eyes. Although, if I did that category, I could also bring in Dharmendra and Amit Sadh and Adult Madhavan.
Salman was sooooooooooooo handsome when he was young. He’s not un-handsome now, but it’s not breathtaking any more. The eyes, the lips, the fringe of hair, the slim body, he was just stunning.

And now I am thinking about my blue eyes and wondering if they feel like they are taking your gaze. The only blue eyed super power I knew about before was that you are supposed to be able to hold your alcohol much better. Something about European ancestry and generations of alcohol tolerance built in.

I’m watching Sharmilee and Shashi’s eyelashes are so long and thick they cast shadows on his face! Rakhee also has gorgeous eyes that look fantastic with 60s makeup. (the movie itself is insane but fun)
