Happy Saturday!  Let’s talk about all the things that are too meaningless to be deserving of a real post!

2.0 teaser!  First question, is this worth 550 crore?  Second question, why is Akshay Kumar barely in it?

 

Now rumor has it that Aamir’s Mahabharata isn’t happening after all because it’s just not practical for all the reasons we said it wasn’t practical when it was first announced (take too much time to film, too controversial right now, too expensive).  Are we sad that we won’t get this epic movie experience?  Happy that Aamir can instead make multiple interesting small films?  Proud of ourselves for realizing this probably wasn’t going to happen?  How do we feel?

 

Song from Namaste England is out!  What do we think, is the Arjun-Parineeti chemistry still strong?

  2. Well it’s Rajnikanth’s film. But i felt the teaser was mostly about Akshay.
    Am I the only one who gets put off by Atif Aslam and Arijit Singh? The latter is still fine, but I hate Atif’s loud vocals. I don’t even listen to Hindi music much nowadays. It’s all about remixes or these usual romantic numbers. I like the music down south much better. What happened to the good old 1 album – 1 music director concept? I hate this concept of multiple music directors.
    And regarding Namaste England – ugh!! I can’t stand Arjun Kapoor. I feel the same way about him the way you feel about Randeep Hooda. How is he even getting roles? And why is growing fatter? And why is Parineeti doing such mediocre roles after losing weight? I can’t believe it’s the same girl who I really liked in Hasee Toh Phasee, Ladies vs Ricky Behl and Shuddh Desi Romance. She should focus on getting better roles rather than trying to become a thin bimbo like some actresses.

    • I am getting a bit sick of the multi-composer albums myself. Manmarziyaan is a really good one, has a unique sound in each song and feels like a cohesive whole. Maybe it’s just lack of imagination in hiring? It seems like every music director in Hindi film is Pritam or Vishal-Shekhar. And if you can’t get one of them, you make due by collecting songs piecemeal from other people.

      • Yeah I really liked the songs of Manmarziyaan too. Amit Trivedi and Anurag Kashyap make a great combo.
        I’d gladly take Vishal – Shekhar and Pritam any day over the Armaan Maliks and the likes. It’s a pain to listen to Hindi music nowadays.

        • I wonder if that’s why both Zero and Thugs have the same music director? There just aren’t that many around who are qualified or interested in doing a full original soundtrack and some films still require it. So the few people who can end up working extra hard.

    • It’s starting, there’s supposed to be motion posters released within the next couple of days, and then I expect the teaser, song teaser, trailer, song trailers, and on and on to all come out.

      YRF has been keeping the whole look of the film under such tight wraps, maybe they want everything to burst on us at the last minute as a surprise rather than risking leaks?

  5. Yuck, 2.0 looks so bad, but there were a couple of moments (the army of robots forming and the cellphones flying out of peoples’ hands that I thought..well, maybe there’s something interesting here). Still my whole mental block of watching anything with him is not helping!

    Does this Aamir thing mean Imran Khan will never work again?! I thought he was going to a get a pity role from his uncle! Bring me back my Imran!

    Tere Liye was so reassuring. Arjun and Parineeti still have some good chemistry here and the film looks a lot more fun and romantic than in the trailer. I kind of get chills in the moment when she stands up on the motorcycle when the music swells and it’s only slightly ruined by the Titanic moment after. God, I hate that movie sometimes.

    I’m going to finish watching Khuda Ghawah in my third sitting tonight. What a weird and epic film. Sridevi in the first role I can’t stand her in (in either role). Amitabh is entertaining though and I love his friendship with the Rajput jailer. Overwrought and very 90s otherwise.

    • Oh good, it’s not just me! My first thought was for Imran as well. His short film ad thing that he directed is coming out soon, so I guess Aamir thinks he has a job and there’s no need to produce a movie just to give him work.

      The best part about Khuda Gawah is the ridiculous epic ending. So keep going! That’s your reward!

  6. Saw this Twitter exchange between KJo & Tapsee where he was praising Manmarziyaan & tagged a wrong handle for Tapsee. Apparently this is not the first time he had done this & Tapsee resplied that he needs to tag her right. Arjun Kapoor also did the same thing & she again said ppl need to tag her correct handle. KJo jumped in with a sly comment that she gets angry. Arjun mentioned that fuck tagging is last season🙄So this is something they do knowingly. It was really bizzare to see such famous ppl being so insecure & doing something so silly. While most celebrities are profuse in their praise for Abhi & Vicky, praise for Tapsee seems a bit withheld. What’s up with that?
    Also this interesting article about social media influencers& use of online promos for movies in Tamil. But I think this is true for all Indian industries including Hindi.

    • I don’t get why people aren’t praising Taapsee in this film. I found all 3 leads excellent, but it is her movie, she is the central character, she should get at least as much praise as the others. Maybe it’s the same thing I noticed before, that she just doesn’t seem to play the game? Not as many stories about her at parties, doing cute things in interviews, and so on. So people don’t feel as interested in being friendly and complimentary to her.

      And that article was fascinating! It kind of confirmed and explained some things that had been confusing me. There have been things that I would have thought would have trended or gotten more attention just because they were clever and new and the kind of thing that the internet likes, and nothing happened. And then there have been other things that made no sense, like all the fuss over the Race 3 stuff (songs, trailers, first look, etc.) which was just kind of boring and not worth sharing. But now it makes sense! If it’s all a straight budget issue, then the films that the studio is less interested in getting behind won’t show up online, no matter how exciting their content. And it explains that kind of gut distaste I have for “trending on twitter” kind of excitement. And why everyone seems so interested in getting twitter followers, which made no sense to me if there was no economic advantage. But I guess there is one, all those people who tweet fake news or whatever other stupid thing that it takes 5 minutes to disprove are gaining viewers and then I guess selling them for advertising. Blech! Twitter is a cesspool and a fraud and I hate it.

      • It’s outrageous right? How much of what we see is actually is just made up stuff. And not just Twitter, every social media platform has become this big maze of fake presentations, fan wars, false trends. You repeat something enough number of times, it becomes truth or at least partial truths. Genuine blogs like yours that goes for in-depth analysis & looking beyond the superficial are hard to find cos it requires more than just liking & retweeting mindlessly.

        • What’s interesting is, in my very very minimal experience, the people actually making the products get very excited when they find that real content too. I’ve gotten messages from directors and actors who are excited to find someone that writes seriously and honestly about what they do. It surprised me, because I’m not necessarily complimentary to what they are doing, and I have my funky typos and stuff, and I’m certainly not famous. So they are really digging too if they find someone like me and take the time to read what i wrote enough to respond to it substantively. It must be frustrating from their side as well, to see how the discussion has turned into this pointless maze and any real feedback and appreciation of what they are doing has become hard to find. At least for the smaller people, I’ve gotten messages from Gautham Menon and the director of Ramente Edethottam, and Raj and DK about my A Gentleman review, and Prithviraj and Madhavan too, and I think some others I’m not remembering right now. They must not get many real reviews, but I don’t think Karan Johar really has to struggle to find professional high quality feedback, no reason to waste time scrolling through blogs for it if he can find it from legit sources.

        • I even have started to doubt reviews from professionals I still liked to read ten years ago…
