Wednesday Watching Post: What Are You Reading and Watching and Thinking and Listening to This Week?

Happy Wednesday! Time to exchange stories and links and all that fun stuff! You amuse yourselves while I try to get ahead of postings because I have a party tonight.

I’ll start!

Reading: Not much! My brain has turned to mush. It’s that time of year. Also, I maybe suffering from massive sugar crashes thanks to having a grande peppermint mocha latte every morning and cake for lunch (my office has a bit of a competitive baking thing going).

Oh, there is one thing, continuing our PC talk. An article from The Cut, smart savvy pop culture publication. UPDATE: it’s been pulled from The Cut, but here is an old link to it: http://web.archive.org/web/20181205133311/https://www.thecut.com/2018/12/everything-to-know-about-priyanka-chopra-and-nick-jonas.html

(And while i am thinking about it, here is my detailed post on PC’s pre-America fame and persona and ups and downs if you feel the need to refer back or direct others here: https://dontcallitbollywood.com/2018/06/21/hindi-film-101-priyanka-chopra-and-shahrukh-khan/ )

Watching: Well, Dina came over on Monday and I made her watch the Sara and Janhvi Koffee episodes and we agreed that we like Sara better and she also feels like she’s got a better career prospect. Besides that, New Girl while I try to focus on writing every night and fail.

Thinking: I think this might be the moment that I give up and buy presents on The Internet instead of continuing to try to make them. I’m trying to be better at trading money for time instead of killing myself doing everything at once. Speaking of, I am also buying food for tonight’s potluck party. And I may have to pay someone to cut Dog Hazel’s nails instead of trying to do it myself. Speaking of DH, she is reacting to all my over scheduled and under energized-ness by feeling a little fragile spending a lot of time hiding under my desk at work.

20181204_164207.jpg

Listening: The fun one! Okay, I’m still all Christmas music all the time, but if we count stuff I am watching/listening too, there’s also the Teefa in Trouble soundtrack. “Item Song” is great, but I think this is my favorite.

Now, question for you! A silly one because I’m getting the Christmas too-much-sugar-too-little-sleep sillies: Out of all of Indian film, who would you Hook-Up, Date, Marry?

I’ll start! Hook-up, Ranbir, because I have to confess to some curiosity about what all the Kapoor fuss is about. But obviously I would never want to date or marry him. Date, Ranveer. He seems super fun. But too exhausting to marry. Marry, Maddy. Very solid, very reliable. Bonus answer, all three, Akshay Kumar! Seems like a fun hook-up, a great date, and a great husband.

And now the female side of things! Hook-up, Vidya I guess. Seems very comfortable in her own body. Date, definitely Kat, the perfect supportive girlfriend. Marry, Parvathy. We can have long interesting conversations for the rest of our lives.

How about you?

  1. My life is a bit sad and a lot stressed right now, but I’m enjoying the pops of happiness and interest that Zero promotional stuff is giving me. And reading here, as always!

Last night had a light and fun dream about being on a road trip with Shah Rukh, Salman, my family, and some other non-famous types. I’m attributing it to the new Zero song.

Thinking and reading: Have a Merry Mueller Christmas as trial memos and subpoenas related to 45 and the gang continue flying.

Also thinking about that lovely pic of SRK and Suhana after her play in London, and what her and Aryan’s careers might look like. I think it would be cool if Aryan had a career like Farhan’s (Farhan, write Don 3!)

Hookup, date, marry, male: Arjun R, Ranbir, Shah Rukh. Female: Deepika, Rani, Konkona.

    • But why would you date Ranbir????? He will just leave you emotionally and professionally destroyed! Of course, having survived that, you will move on to bigger and better things, so maybe there is a benefit to it. But such a high price to pay! Surely a hook-up would be safer.

Totally agree with your female list though, excellent choices all around.

      • Ah, but I have the benefit of his past girlfriend’s experiences, so I’d just be dating him for fun, knowing it could end anytime. The good thing about Ranbir is that he doesn’t blab publicly about whatever went on between him and his ex-es, so I wouldn’t have to worry about my reputation as the Executive Director of the Meer Foundation getting tarnished. 😉

  2. I saw Akaash Vani, and I’m still in the middle of Teefa in Trouble
Thinking: Today is my son’s 8th birthday and I’m thinking about it and about cleaning I still have to finish before saturday party.

Hook-up I was thinking Arjun, but no, he is too intense for just one time, so he will be my date option and hook-up his cousin Harsh
Marry – just like you, Maddy

Instead of female version I will do film characters one:
Hook-up with Ram (Vijay Sethupathi) from 96
Date – Nivin’s communist friend from Thattathin Marayathu
Marry – Shah Rukh from Dear Zindagi – he is mature, hot and lives near the ocean

    • This seems complicated, hooking up with Harsh and dating Arjun. Although, Arjun is dating the ex-sister-in-law of his previous girlfriend, so I guess he would have to be fine with it.

Love your film character flip. I’ll do it, but only with SRK characters. Hook-up with Don (I have to admit I am curious), date Rahul from DTPH (seems like a lot of excitement and fun times, but also too much work to marry), and marry his cameo role in Saathiya, responsible and reliable and kind.

My story would be very filmi – first I would have very short story with Harsh, and after some time I would be presented as Arjun’s new girlfriend and Harsh would be all: oh I love this girl but can’t say it because my cousin’s hapiness is more important 😉

        • And then after there is much drama, they both give you up and your parents arrange your marriage to Maddy. Years later, Harsh and Arjun re-enter your lives and try to win you back, but of course fail because by now you are fully dedicated to Maddy and love him more than you ever loved either of them.

There’s a not so nice term for that:) There is a certain American politician that I hate with every fiber of my being who in my weaker moments I have had a thought or two about and it’s the same thing, but definitely more of an extreme case of hate/lust. And no it’s not Trump…I’m not insane!

          • Well, if you are marrying Arjun K, then we can change our film a bit. Angie hooks up with Harsh, then dates Arjun, both men are left devastated and miserable (of course). Then, you burst into their lives like a comet, winning them both over. You hook-up with and then dump Harsh. Months later, you meet Arjun and the two of your fall in love. It isn’t until the wedding that Harsh discovers his mysterious hook-up woman is now his cousin’s fiancee. He gives an impassioned speech to you trying to win you over, and you sympathetically tell him to get over himself because you and Arjun have something real and he is just nothing to you. Harsh then runs away from the wedding to find Angie (now happily married to Maddy) and tries to break up her marriage. Failing of course, because it is rock solid. And everything ends with a nice dinner party between the two couples (you and Arjun K and Angie and Maddy) while Harsh decides to just be alone for a while.

I like the idea, but I don’t like execution.

I think it is one of the movies that depicts college romances, parents’ motives for marriage, girls’ feelings of responsibility, marital rape and psycholicial and emotional abuse just so well. Margaret, I really hope you watch it so we can discuss it. There are so many powerful scenes (besides just the one in the end) that have stayed with me long after watching it.

  3. The article from the The Cut is badly written. They call her a global scam artist but do not have anything to support it other than her being extra and loving money. A line like that needs supporting research which could have come if they dug around through what she’s been doing in the Indian media for the last 10 years. Instead, it has victimized her and started a wave of support for her calling the author racist and misogynist. This reminds of me of when bad articles are written about the Kardashians but they’re done poorly and creates sympathy for them instead. Also reaffirms the notion that Priyanka is heading in the “famous for being famous” direction. Nobody knows anything about her acting but she’s always being talked about for no important reason. Everything will revolve around her relationship, fashion, how mean the media is, girl power, and whatever new publicity stunt she can cook up. Next will be pregnancy rumors drama.

    Like

    • Maybe the problem is, once someone is famous for being famous, any criticism of them becomes personal. Because the personal is professional. Like, I would treat Kat as an actress far more viciously than I would treat her as a person and that’s appropriate. I can critique her performance in a film and say “she was bad at her job”, but I shouldn’t critique her personal life and say “she was a bad girlfriend”. But PC (and the Kardashians and various other celebs) have made their personal life into their job. They are getting a paycheck for being married, for dating, for throwing a baby shower, for all of these things. There is nothing separate and “professional” that is available to criticize. And so either you say nothing at all and they are able to continue making a career of being famous without informed critique of the “performance” they are putting on and what it is saying, or you say something and it appears like an inappropriate personal attack.

    • I thought the article was poorly written, too, because it lacks the context. But I also still think that Priyanka and her “team” have cultivated this celebrity persona and so no one should be surprised that it ends up backfiring at times.

The Cut also published a laughable piece about PC’s wedding clashing with DeepVeer’s and Kapil Sharma’s as if the latter two were on the same level of importance in Indian celebrity circles. And they clearly don’t get that the DeepVeer wedding is just as important if more so in India (despite Modi making his appearance).

Keep It, a Crooked Media pop culture podcast, covered the PC wedding and it was fascinating how they talked about her, also focusing on how she is being pushed by various media on the American public as a big star (the Vogue cover, etc) and the only one to represent the Indian celebrity “quota”. It’s a big deal that she was the first star from India to headline a tv show, but I always want to be that person that points out that Deepika and others way before them have been crossing over as well. One of the podcasters was alluding to this but kind of by accident.

  4. Priyanka Chopra maybe a lot of things but that article is utterly vicious, sexist & racist. It’s one thing to gossip idly but quite another for any decent publication to put out such a nasty piece of pure speculation without any sort of proofs or sources.

  5. I’m just looking forward to January when I watch and read whatever I want and I don’t feel this weird compulsion to stuff myself with Hallmark movies (and Hallmark podcasts) and holiday romance novels!

My picks (it’s so hard to decide so I’m going to not pick just one):
    Men
Hook-up with Hrithik or Arjun R or Ajay: I think their charm would quickly wear off and I wouldn’t even let Hrithik speak
Date: Arjun K. or Ranbir: Both of them would be fun to hook-up with multiple times;) and get to know, plus you’d get to know all of their cool relatives, too, but in the end maybe too many mommy issues and daddy issues
Marry: Saif or Abhishek and of the younger crowd, Vicky for sure.

Women (much easier to chose from!)
Hook-up: Neha, Date: Konkona, Marry: Anushka

So I will allow you to cut a wild swath through the Hindi film actor world as you have a series of one night stands, and then two serious relationships, but I feel you really do have to marry just one guy. I vote for Saif, because that way you get a palace.

      • Of those three, based on all of my perceptions and conjectures, a post divorce Saif is the best bet of the three. He just seems like someone who would be endlessly interesting to talk to and spar with and he’s only getting sexier and cooler with age. I agree that if I have to chose, it has to be him.

But Abhishek really would give him a run for his money. His public persona is charming, cool, and sometimes really funny. And he is totally underrated as a sex symbol. But those weird familial pressures and his recent behavior seem to hide some dark depths.

Being devil’s advocate for just a second, he’s actually kind of odd looking with his longish face and just generally elfish features, but somehow it all works gloriously. He’s one of those actors, that I find my eyes just glued to on screen. Though I’m just not sure of his off-screen personality. I envision him as being a chill, low-key kind of guy with a few major hobbies (apparently tech and race cars?), who is well-liked in the industry but shies away from the limelight most of the time.

  6. Reading:

Circe by Madeline Miller, been on the bedside table for a while so I think I better continue reading it while I have a short holiday before school starts again

    Watching:

Whatever I honestly feel like, not much on the must watch list right now in case of movies. On the news front PC and Nick because its so weird, so right and just fascinating, becoming a Reality Star really would fit her and its just so odd because when I was young I watched Camp Rock on Disney Channel where Nick was and to see him now linked to Indian Celebrity history (somewhat) its hard for my brain to connect the two because the two seem sooooo distant in my mind

    Listening:

I am OBSESSED over the Dilbar Arabic by Nora Fatehi and Fnaire, it’s so catchy and I basically refreshed YouTube before it was available on iTunes so I could so I could buy it as well and also the soundtrack to Laila Majnu, very strong, just need to see the movie itself to connect some songs there to the soundtrack

(On a personal note just telling you since I did out it out here that the (unofficial) boyfriend stayed unofficial and we are now just friends – oh well what can one do but move on – and so I watched Dear Zindagi for the second time (don’t usually watch a movie a second time because of good visual memory especially if the movie is good) and not surprisingly it is a very healing movie to watch after I did my crying and moved on)

    Like

    • My mistake. Meant to say I watch a movie a second time or more times if I find it good, otherwise its a one-time watch for the said reason of good visual memory and thus need no reminding if its merely OK or just plain bad

    • I am so glad Dear Zindagi did it’s healing work for you! It really is a great movie for “well, I will be sad but life goes on”. Far healthier than all those “true love for ever and you will never get over it movies”. And far more honest, because you will get over it.

  7. Watching: Currently watching lots of bad hallmark movies but super excited to watch Teefa in Trouble this week. Thank you for letting us know that it is on Netflix! Also, thinking about watching the Little Singham animation movies in anticipation of Simmba.

Reading: I have a few long flights coming up and I am looking for fun fiction recommendations – preferably by an Indian author. I have not read many books Indian authors. And who better to provide awesome recommendations than the DCIB community.

H/D/M Male: hookup with Aditya Roy Kapoor and Sidharth Malhotra, date Farhan, and marry Fawad!!!
H/D/M Female: hookup with Alia (she really needs someone to get her away from Ranbir and I am hoping a good hookup will do that), date Katrina or Deepika and marry Soman

    • I love Anuja Chauhan, Jhumpa Lahiri, Sonali Dev, Anuradha Roy, Amulya Malladi, Bharati Mukherjee, and Monica Pradhan for good Indian and diaspora stories.

I Iike your choices of Farhan and Fawad. Fawad does seem like such a decent guy. Farhan is perfect for dating, he’s not quite sexy enough for a hook-up, and he’s a bit too self-important for long-term and I think his need to be a rock star is kind of sad. Plus, as much as I love Zoya’s work, I think she’d be a mean sister-in-law. But I actually do love Farhan’s sexy speaking voice and he’s a really underrated dancer. So dating him would be cool!

    • So excited for more people to see Teefa! I even convinced my parents to watch it, and they LOVED it.

Can’t help with the recommendations, because I have very boring taste in books, but I am sure the wise DCIB folks will help you out.

Just to clarify, would your preference be hooking up with ARK and Sid simultaneously (based on how friendly they were at Sonam’s wedding, they might be up for it) or sequentially? Love your date and marry choices! Especially if you use your girlfriend powers to get Farhan to FINALLY WRITE DON 3.

I think so long as we are getting Alia over Ranbir, maybe instead we just have Kat hook-up with her? Which also might be really good and life-affirming for Kat.

It’s worth it to marry Sonam just for the awesome wedding. Plus, Anil as father-in-law!

I LOVE your idea of having Kat hook-up with Alia. Oh man, now I really wish I knew Kat or Alia so I could make this happen! Do you think I could get in touch with her PR people and convince them that this is a way better PR stunt and they should make this happen?!

The Star Touched Queen – Roshini Chokshi (YA Fantasy)
Love, Hate and Other Filters – Samira Ahmed (YA Contemporary)
When Dimple Met Rishi – Sandhya Menon (YA Romance…I wasn’t blown away but I still want to try her other ones)

And how could I forget! The best book I’ve read this year!

He mostly writes grand sweeping historical things, which are nice if you’re on an airplane, but his characters, particularly the female ones, just seem a bit off to me. The Hungry Tide has a smaller scope and all the characters ring true, and I could not put it down.

Oh, and Manil Suri! His “trilogy” with the names of (not about) the Hindu gods: Death of Vishnu, Age of Shiva, City of Devi. They are completely different books: the first is a comic novel about a neighborhood in the 70s (I could only pick out the period from the Bollywood references), the second is an intense look at the emotional bond between a mother and son, and the third is speculative/science fiction. They are all fantastic and I’m hoping he’ll write more.

        • I don’t want Aish!!!!! She seems not nearly as interesting to talk to as Sush. I don’t want a life time commitment to someone I find boring.

And I refuse to share ARK from DEI with you. Instead, I will hop over to Nivin from Om Shanti Oshaana.

  9. I’m fascinated by the fact that they took that horrible article down. First they edited it and then took it off. But of course it lives on cause there are screen shots. The strangest part is that not only is the author a woman, she is a woman of color so why she would venture into such potentially racist territory is very baffling. Also the categorization of Nick as a sweet innocent is beyond absurd. His parents are stage parents who pushed their pre teen boys into the limelight and he has been a celebrity most of his life. Whatever is going on, he went in with eyes wide open. My theory: they met, had a good time, liked each other well enough..both wanted to marry for their own reasons and both know a divorce should it happen will not harm their careers. So, they said, let’s give it a whirl. PC may even have said, arranged marriages have the trope of like growing to love with time…so maybe that is what they are hoping for. She for sure wants a child. And if this were a Hindi movie, after ups and downs, they will discover that they are madly, deeply in love after all and stay together forever.

    • Yeah, it was Nick as a poor innocent that I had the hardest time with in terms of the spin of the article.

I was thinking about it, and part of the problem (based on my fuzzy memory) was tone. If PC and Nick were officially reality stars and this article was written based on the first 3 episodes of their TV show, it wouldn’t have raised nearly as many eyebrows. If they were talked about like the characters “Priyanka” and “Nick” as presented in a limited form, then this level of snark and generalizations would be almost normal. But talking about people who are still officially real people, not playing characters, makes it different.

From my memory (again, fuzzy), I didn’t actually find anything racist in it. Beyond that it was critiquing a woman of Indian heritage. I didn’t see any stereotypes specifically related to race. But it’s possible I missed something.

        • To me that part read more like a comment on their age difference as a power differential, not anything to do with race. That must be why I was missing it.

I said the same myself, about both PC and Nick and Ranbir and Alia, that kind of age difference can mean a couple is looking for different things from the relationship. Or not, but it’s the first thing I noticed.

      • There was something about how awful it was of her to put Nick on a horse without asking if he liked it. Not sure how the author knows what transpired between them. I think they removed that bit because I couldn’t find it when I looked again. Say what you want about Priyanka, Nick looks more than happy to go along with this.

      • I think the racist piece was a smoke screen put out by her universally acknowleged PR maching. Even Kajol said it!! The woman who write it is a woman of color. It wasn’t racist: it was incorrect esp. about Nick, no innocent he, and mean for no reason. I don’t believe these two are in love, but that was a really low blow article. If something makes ME sympathetic to PC, then it has to have been really really bad.

        • I’m glad I’m not the only person who didn’t see racism in it. I reread it a couple of times, and I still don’t see it. She was addressing them as people and individuals, not stereotypes, which is all I look for.

    • Oh, and one other thing, it was a post on PC that was the only time I had to take something down here. I’ve said way worse and more poorly written stuff about other people, but there is something about PC that gets enough of a reaction to force you to actually remove content even if it is click bait. And of course, also in the context of the English language internet long form writing (as always).

    • Hook-up with Randeep so long as the lights are out and I can’t see his face. Date Aish so I can always have the prettiest girl in the room on my arm. Only marry Shiney so I can kill him.

  11. For Men:
Hook up – Hritikh/Ranbir, Date – Milind Soman, Marry – Javed Akhtar (because I trust Shabana Azmi’s taste!)

    For Women:
Hookup – Lara Dutta, Date – Nargis Fakhri (she seems really fun), Marry – None of the current lot…they all seem neurotic and exhausting…but if I could go back in time then Waheeda Rehman or Jaya Bhaduri.

What I am obsessively reading/watching this week is all the hullabaloo about Rakhi Sawant’s (maybe) upcoming wedding…a huge fan of her histrionics…and she is outdoing herself with these latest shenanigans…which brings me to why have you entirely ignored her in your blog?

    • Milind Sonam is and excellent dating choice. Especially if you have events coming up where arm candy would be helpful. And very good reason for picking Javed!

If I could go back in time, I think I’d go for Hema Malini.

I cannot get a handle on Rakhi Sawant, that’s why I don’t cover her. She’s a dancer? but also a TV personality? But also just does stuff sometimes to get attention?

      • she’s does it all..item songs, Indian big brother, reality competitions, Indian bachelorette, small acting parts in movies etc. she really just needs to stay in the limelight to continue making money because she came from nothing and has made a brand for herself to support her family….no doubt she is insane but also hilarious…have you at least seen her Koffee with Karan episode?

Her latest wedding antic is that she is doing a nude wedding with another social media celeb in LA….Prime minister Modi, SRK, KjO etc will all attend…and .the first night happenings will be live streamed for all to see…and that’s just the tip of iceberg!

        • Well, I don’t believe any of that! I mean, I believe what you said about her, I don’t believe she is doing a nude wedding in LA.

          • Of course this wedding isn’t happening…no one believes it seriously…the point is to see what creative and hilarious excuse she will find to cancel the wedding this time…

  12. I had yet another busy weekend when I thought I was going to be free, which made it all the worse and this coming weekend I am GOING TO RELAX and I don’t care what else happens. So, I only watched Delhi 5 which I already commented on. I think last Thursday or Friday was the anniversary of the release of Coolie, so I thought I would watch that and made it through about 10 minutes. Honestly, I’ve watched a lot of Amitabh movies but that was a bit too much for me. Have you seen it? Should I stick it out?

I keep changing my mind, but at the moment I’d like to hook up with Ranveer, date Anurag, and marry Rajkummar. I was tempted to marry Saif so I could be the Begum, but I don’t know about marrying someone who’s been famous his whole life. Anurag seems really interesting, and I actually think he’s really attractive, but eventually he’d start harshing my mellow. I would do all of those things with Rahul Bose and I think this is like my fourth consecutive post here that mentions Rahul Bose and I’m getting embarrassed.

Women: hook up with Deepika, date Twinkle, marry Konkona.

    • I haven’t been able to stick out Coolie either. I don’t remember it is shockingly worse than his other movies, but it wasn’t the best.

Interesting! Throwing Anurag in the mix! He seems like a fairly un-toxic boyfriend, although maybe a toxic husband. I wouldn’t necessarily want to be tied to him for life, but for a few months, sure! Rajkummar seems like a great supportive guy though, definitely worth marrying. Ranveer, do you really want that energy in bed with you?

And ha! I think this is the second or third time Dips has been picked as the hook-up!
