Happy Valentine’s Week!!! What Are the Most Romantic Songs?

Oh boy, fun post! And one that I definitely need your help with, because there are just so many romantic songs out there.

I am looking for that swoony “OMG I am going to die they love each other so much” feeling. Not the fun party song, not the item song, not the sad missing each other song, not even the teasing fighting song. I want total SWOON. And to set the high bar I am looking for right from the start, I give you “Tujhe Dekho”.

Continuing the swoon, moving right into “Main Yahaan Hoon”.

Not like Shahrukh has a monopoly on swoon, Salman can be pretty strong especially back in the day, “Pehla Pehla Pyar Hai”

A little more swooning from the 90s, “Pardesi Pardesi”

Gender-blind swooning, feel the love! “Tera Yaar Hoon Main”

Moving back again to the early 2000s, a gorgeous title song from a gorgeous romantic movie, “Socha Na Tha”

This one, there is love bursting out all over! Mostly with Kunal Kapoor, but other places too “Ishq Hua”

Many options in this movie, but I think this is the purest heartstopping swoon, “Hawayein”.

Get ready to die of the romance and feel 15 again, “Tum Hi Ho”

Speaking of teenage style over the top romance, “Humdard”!

Okay, that’s ten, I will bring in the non-Hindi now to round us out to 14. “Sneham Cherum Neram”, of course

The Tamil classic! Which I can only find in Hindi, sorry. “Tu Hi Re”

Oh shoot, that reminded me of another Hindi song that I really have to include, “Kahin Toh Hogi Woh”

Okay, grand finale!!!! Back to Shahrukh, “Tera Rasaa Chhodoon Na”

I know that isn’t exhaustive, tell me what I am missing! What other swoony songs are out there? What’s your favorite “I just want to die of the romance” song?

  1. Also try songs from ARR’s Yuva (Anjaanaa Anjani by Lucky Ali), Madhavan’s Alai Payuthey (original of Saathiya), RHTDM (Zara zara).
Saathiya Tune Kya Kiya from Salman & Revathy’s Love

  2. You know, Margaret, for me, romancing someone is a feeling that is embedded in things that you won’t just see in one song, there is something that triggers the feeling for the romance of others…to appreciate the love expressed I somehow need a connect to the person(s) and the “before” (no movie starts with a romantic song)…
I like all your choices but I only can relate to those where I know the movie…and even then, there are so different facettes of romantic love depending on the age, characters, upbringing, inhibitions a.s.o.
Some of the songs are filled with romantic images of the story or with imagination, some are narrating the moment.
As a ShahRukh afficionado, my feelings will more connect with the romances he shows in the romantic songs of his movies than with anybody else.
As I have romance in my life, I enjoy the songs as someone who connects to the loving and longing feeling of the characters, but there is no wish to be romanced like that.
    If that makes sense…

    • That makes complete sense! I know what you mean, I can appreciate a romantic song out of context, but when I see it within a movie it becomes so much more.

  3. Ups, I wrote a long take…it doesn’t show…did I forget to press comment???
To make it short now…I like all your choices but can only relate to those I know the part of the story until the song’s place in the movie.
As I have romance in my life and as a ShahRukh afficionado, my feelings reach out the most to his characters and the ones he romances and everything that makes just this song so special because of what the two persons are.
    If this makes sense…

    • Makes sense! And the last comment and this one didn’t have your email attached (this is Claudia, right?) so I had to approve them because you showed up as an anonymous new user.

      • No, the second half is long, boring and the lovers are separated. Better only watch videos, like this one which looks like made especially for me because it has ALL my romantic fantasies in one: sexy, bearded, wet man being romantic at the ocean.

        • Yeah, but he’s so skinny!

Speaking of which, if you haven’t watched 96 yet, Vijay Sethupathi is like someone took all the Angie fantasies together and then wrote a character around that. He even wears a plain grey t-shirt (which gets wet) for the whole second half of the movie.

          • Yes, Dhanush is not exactly my type of man but he is so good that I don’t care.

And yes, I not only saw 96 but I loved it so much (and Vijay) that I know some scenes by heart and have goosebumbs everytime I hear the music.

          • Now the challenge is to get Vijay to do another straight romantic role, so you don’t have to follow him to the more drama stuff he usually does.

  4. I nominate Tujh Mein Rab Dikhta Hai as well. And Ishq Sufiyana from Dirty Picture. And Suraj Hua Madham from KKKG which kind of seques into Gerua from Dilwale.
And 2 from Main Hoon Na – Tumse Milke Dil Ka etc especially in the SRK/Sushmita bit and Tumhe Jo Maine Dekha.

Oh also Inn Lamhon Ke Daaman Mein from Jodhaa Akbar.

    • Oh, I forgot about Yaadon Mein! I think I might still pick “Hawayein” as my most swoony song from that movie, but it is a close thing.

  5. For me the ultimate swoon songs are from Silsila – Dekha ek Khwaab and Yeh Kahaan aa Gaye….The chemistry, the stunning locales, the lyrics, and Lata’s voice all together create magic!
Yash Chopra has taught me that love = serenading in tulip fields

    • Oh, good chooses! I was trying to think of a Yashji option and all I could remember was Kabhi Kabhi. And there aren’t really any swoon songs in that. The title song sounds swoony, but was used more as a sad song.

  6. Ishq Hua will always be one of my favorites…I think it was the first time one of those swoony songs worked for me because it was grounded in actual reality, not fantasy sequences in far off locations. I also like the song in Hasee Toh Phasee called Ishq Bulaava and Iktara from Wake Up Sid.

Here’s Ishq Bulaava…Sid, I think, does some of his best “romantic” acting in this film. His chemistry with Parineeti really works.

  7. I love this post! Lovely songs from everyone. I’m gonna post a comment with a bunch of links to some of my favorite Shah Rukh songs (sorry but he’s the one that makes me swoon. I might lust after other actors, but I don’t swoon over them).

For now though, I got some recommendations from a colleague in India who is a multi-regional movie fan–a bit more critical than I am. I was telling her how much I loved Ajay-Atul’s music for Zero and wanted to listen to more, but I was intimidated by their massive catalogue. She recommended these two songs from the Marathi movie Sairat (I guess Dhadak was a remake of this? I can’t keep track at all). Young love at it’s swooniest!

    • Sairat (SPOILERS) has a painfully horrible tragic ending, so I have conscientiously avoided it because I can’t take the depression (END SPOILERS).

It hadn’t clicked for me before that Ajay-Atul did Sairat! No wonder they are suddenly everywhere this year, people must have been snapping them up after it was such a sleeper crossover hit.

      • I had a sneaking suspicion after watching the videos. I asked my colleague, “These guys seem too pure for this world, does something terrible happen to them?” She just told me I should watch the movie.

  8. This one from Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman might be on the sexy side of swoony, but it stays just on this side for me. I also thought of Aur Kya from PBDHH, but this one gets less play, I think.

Here’s a (mostly) non-Shah Rukh one. I love this song so much. It really captures that uplifting, silly feeling of new love. And I love all the couples. Kuch To Hua Hai from KHNH.

After SRK/Juhi, it’s all about SRK/Rani for me. Tumhi Dekho Na from KANK (same reflecty thing as in Kuch To Hua Hai).

And Dheere Jalna from Paheli. (Though I always feel a little pang that it’s not Juhi going to him…)

And this one from MNIK which just completed 9 years! Sajdaa–fulfilled love. I prefer to think of this as a very happy romance movie which happens to end with a lovely couple getting a phone call in bed. 🙂 Also–do you think it would be weird if I asked Shah Rukh to blow on me if I ever get to meet him? Such a nice way to bless/protect someone.

Bonus: SRKajol fanvid. It’s a bit yearny/pining, but swoony too. A lil weird because it merges movie and life, but I couldn’t resist. Nice song too!

    • Well worth waiting for! These all are, indeed, swoony! And now you have me debating whether a “best romantic fanvids” would be an appropriate post for Valentine’s week.
