Shahrukh Summer Discussion Post: How Would We Fix His Hair?

There are no bad ideas here! I am open to “stop dying it” and also “grow it shoulder length like in Asoka”. But I think we can all agree that there are better options than “slightly too long bangs and tan highlights” that he is going for now.

Here’s a recent hair photo. Now, I like the kind of shaggy style, but I would go darker, and with just a hint of gel so it doesn’t look as dry.

This, on the other hand, far too much gel! And maybe still too light in color?

This was my favorite hairstyle on him for a long time, but now it might be a little too young?

This is a disaster, perhaps Worst Ever. That blonde streak? WHY???

I like the Don 2 look, but maybe too short?

But then this is too long!

The KANK hair is in between, but I don’t like it. So much gel and shaping to it, and as soon as a breath of wind comes up, it all goes wrong again.

Should he return to the slight mullet, so he keeps the depth and thickness but also has bangs?

Or was he at his best back when he started and it was completely natural and unshaped?

I just don’t know! Thoughts? Obviously I will be tweeting this post to him, so you never know, if we could be deciding his next look.

  1. Ok…so I love the sheer volume of his hair recently…I like the shaggy look on top but also am crazy about the gelled volume he has in JHMS

Dear Zindagi has him looking smashing as well but it’s possible that I’m so overwhelmed by him as the therapist from my own therapy experiences that I’m blinded by him, lol.

    • So you would vote for lightly gelled volume option? I feel like it looks better now in that kind of style than it did when he was young, but I’m not sure if that is because his hair has changed in consistency as he aged, or because gel technology has improved.

What color would you go for? Black, light brown, or natural salt and pepper (which we have yet to see but based on his hair, is there under all the treatments)>

  2. I like black as it seems more ‘him’ is hen he’s formal. I agree that there is likely some salt under whatever he’s doing (although to be fair, I just turned 50 and I have maybe 10 greys at any time) and I for one would like him to embrace it. I love the S&P look and I think it might complement his development as an actor. I do also enjoy the unkempt sandy look in the airplane pic…and I agree that it needs a bit more moisture. So I guess I’m not being that helpful but I will say I hated the blond wings in HNY. And I don’t like his hair super short…but works for some roles well (MNIK.)

    • I think the short hair makes him look kind of average. Which, like you say, works for some roles. The long hair gives him a movie star sort of dash, which works if his character is supposed to be sexy and charismatic like that (JHMS, DZ, Raees).

So I think we can agree longer is better, so long as there is enough gel or conditioner that it doesn’t look dry. But color is still up in the air.

  3. What?? That KANK hair is sooooo sexy. His styling in that film was so good , except sometimes instead of the t shirts more classy clothing might have been hotter but it wouldn’t have gone with the character. Anyway I loved the blazers and jackets he kept wearing with that laptop bag

    • Dev was such a sexy character. Irritating, but sexy. He would have been annoying to deal with but he’s sexy to watch. I loved Rani’s acting as usual but I wish the character had been written a little differently…I wish she had been a little more driven when it came to her affair. not that it’s a good thing..but I mean if she was going to have one I wish she wouldn’t have been so guilty about it all the time, like when she was crying while they were going to sleep together, I mean that’s just not realistic!! Because if she really wanted Dev she wouldn’t have been crying at that moment, maybe after but not during. I just wish they had written her character with the same insecurities and rigidness that was already there..but made her a little more confident when it came to the affair. It just would have made their relationship sexier and upped the chemistry, which was already good. I would have loved to see a little more passion from Maya

      • ooo, good note! It would have helped the character too, we so a kind of softness and lightness in Dev when he was with Maya that we didn’t see when he was with anyone else, it helped show why the affair was a good thing for him. The script was telling us that Dev gave Maya the passion she had never felt in her life before, but we weren’t seeing it in the dialogue given to her or the way Rani played the role.

      • I didn’t interpret Maya’s tears as guilt. I assumed that she was crying because she and Dev are finally consummating their love, because it’s her first time having sex with someone she’s actually sexually attracted to, and because Dev is just that darn good. 🙂

        • I assumed it was to show us that she was having her first orgasm and finally finding sex as a moment of pleasure rather than frustrated obligation. I think it is clear that Shahrukh and Preity had a fun and satisfying sex life at some point in their marriage so it is less of a revelation for him, that’s why she is the one who is crying and why he is so careful with her.

    • It’s too long and gelled! No to the KANK hair, I say!

Although I do like the kind of slim casual lines to his costumes, jeans and t-shirt and fitted jacket is a great look on him. Also, perfect body. Baby fat is gone, but not skeletally ripped yet. It helped his clothes hang just right.

  4. If we’re veering into clothes, I’m going back to JHMS and the awesome button down shirts that were exactly the right level of snug and short to show off his hard work!

  5. The JHMS hair is perfect. Long but not wild that it blows around in stupid ways like it did in KANK. I don’t mean just in the movie. When he was filming the movie, it looked great in real life too.

When he didn’t style it, it was shaggy but not the stupid bowl cut.

I think there were more layers in it than how he usually has it when all the length is the same.

    • And I definitely don’t want him to go gray. I like it dark brown or black. I prefer it dark but with really soft highlights (not blonde or any light color, really subtle ones) so that it doesn’t look like a block of hair dye.
He can go gray 20 years later. I can’t accept it this early. I refuse to let him age that visibly right now.
I’m mostly fine with anything barring mullets, ponytails, and gray hair.

      • Yaaaas! That airport hair in the pic is PERFECT. The hair/clothes in the movie was of a guy who really maintains himself. Nothing wrong with that. But isn’t it so much better if you look like you don’t care at all and just left the house wearing the first thing you saw and didn’t bother to style your hair and still look this good? This is a busy man who has things to do and places to be and just happens to look amazing by accident.

  6. KANK hair is exactly the right length. We can dial back the gel if you want. I like the style too, sometimes parted and cleaned up, sometimes floppy. Not a fan of the combed back look like Harry and Raees and Jug.

  7. My favorite is the JHMS hair. Colour and style are sexy. His real colour won’t be salt and pepper but totally grey based on the root growth that is evident in some pics.

When he was shooting Zero, it looked like he had a partial toupee in the front, especially at the Filmfare Awards. There was a very thick, light brown, unnaturally glossy section in the front that made him look like he was wearing a hat. I believe he still has a good head of hair though it might be thinning somewhat. I really did not see the point of that.

    • I’m sticking with the theory (that might have come up from comments here, I’m not sure) that he uses wigs sometimes to help with special effects. For Zero, I could believe a hair style combined with wig that was set up to help with the marking for the CGI in some way, and he got stuck with it even in public life because the hair wouldn’t look right without the false front.

I mentioned Dilwale in another comment, it’s really striking there, this deep black artificial looking bangs in the flashbacks, and then thinner natural hair in the modern day. You can see it in JTHJ too, when he is young he has longer darker wiggier looking hair, and then it is natural in the present day parts. I suspect it isn’t about the hair itself so much as using the wig to cover up the other things they had to do to his face, like tape it back.

  8. On the Zero front I agree totally on the CGI concept. Plus trying to make someone so gorgeous look very different…it worked as a character device for me (even though I really disliked the film.) On the Dilwale question, as promised (lol) I went back and watched the making of Gerua video today on YouTube – his hair moves quite a bit (that song is part of the flashbacks) and while it looks darker to me, it moves naturally and his hairline is visible many times in that behind the scenes video. Some shots are during filming and some between, but I don’t perceive anything being used to help with skin/age. I would posit that his hair texture changes with color added, especially if scenes are bing shot not completely in segments of flashback/current, so they may be changing his hair color (and therefore texture) more often than we think. I feel an SRK hair dissertation coming on. I wonder what grad program might support that? Lucky I live in LA. PS – thanks for the link to the vampire post, M! I loved it. I too am pro-vampire and will get in line with the rest of the ladies (and some gentlemen too!)

  9. I found a picture of him awhile ago from an interview…somewhere. His hair was long-ish and kinda shaggy. Anyway now I can’t find it but I’m getting lost in all sorts of other SRK photos so… I’ll still call it a win.

    • I think his natural hair is usually shaggy and longer. But for public appearances and movies, he puts in a ton of product and smooths it and sweeps it back. I like the natural look, with the bangs falling in his eyes.

  10. My favorite hair is any version of shaggy and layered, but not too long. I hated the frosted (like in Veer-Zaara) and wet-look style (more in songs) in the mid 2000’s. I don’t like it when the brushed-back hair is too big or gelled.

Color-wise now, I get why he’s going with brown. As joyomama pointed out, aging skin needs a little bit of color, so crow’s wing black wouldn’t really work as well for him now. But I’d love it if he went salt n pepper. He has amazing hairstylists, so they could control the amount and placement of the “salt” so it doesn’t age him too much.

I super love that he just doesn’t mess with his hair at all when he’s not working. It’s another perfect example of his vanity that doesn’t look like vanity. Like the casual clothes that are always perfectly disheveled and always manage to show off the parts of him he likes best (collarbones/chest). The shaggy hair says–unlike some aging super stars, I still have plenty of wonderful hair. And it really does invite touching. Looks so soft when he does nothing with it. Doesn’t look dry to me.

    • Yes!!!! Agree completely with the message of the shaggy hair. And it doesn’t even feel like star vanity, I bet if acting hadn’t worked out and he’d gone back to Delhi to be a businessman, he would still wear his hair shaggy at this age because he would have a petty vanity that it is still so think unlike other men his age. He’d probably still be dying it too.
