I’m an Aunt!

Yes yes, an entirely personal post. But a happy one. And who doesn’t like sharing happy news?

There’s a baby! In my family! A new baby, for the first time in aaaaaaaaaaaaaages.

Obviously I had warning of this event, but I have been keeping it from blog-people, and most real life-people too, because I am a strong believer that talking about things jinxes them. But now the baby has successfully arrived in the world and I have permission to share the news. Or rather, my sister and brother-in-law said “when do we get a blog post?” which I took as a request for a nice discreet announcement post.

So yes, he’s here. As of 4 days ago. He’s very little, and has hair like Anil Kapoor. That is, it is nice and thick on his head, and also on his shoulders, arms, and back. Little monkey baby.

Picture this, but a baby

All of this is based on photos, I have not actually seen the baby yet. Right now at my sister’s two bedroom apartment there is her, her husband, Baby, and my parents. As of tomorrow, it will be her, her husband, Baby, my parents, her mother-in-law, and possibly also her brother-in-law. I decided that the greatest gift I could give as an aunt/sister is to NOT visit.

Picture this, but in a two bedroom apartment, and if Madhuri had decided to stay home with her dog and watch old movies instead.

In further efforts to be a good aunt, I printed up the best photosand put them on my desk at work. And once there is a pretty photo, I might put it as my laptop lockscreen (bumping Shahrukh, there is no greater honor). And I’ll see him someday, Christmas if not sooner. All of that seems like good aunt-ly things to do. And I suppose I will pick up the rest of it as I go along?

Any advice from the aunts out there? At what point does he get cute? How about turning into a good conversationalist? When do I get to introduce him Gene Kelly or Fred Astaire? And what about Shahrukh?

  1. Congrats! Yah, babies are not cute except to parents. Pretty sure it’s so we will keep them alive and no one else will take them.

I’m an adoptive mom…and I fell in love at first sight. My guy was literally perfect from moment one. So I say…but most people who saw him right away were impressed. Now, I didn’t give birth to him so I didn’t need to think he was perfect…it was no reflection on me! But he was and is gorgeous.

My 7 year old is a huge SRK fan. I didn’t really get him started until around a year ago. Start earlier! Kids love whatever you expose them to frequently.

But I’ll be shocked if the baby bumps S from your screen!

    • Well, I think my parents started us on Fred Astaire around ages 3-5, and Shahrukh is at least as charming and baby friendly as Fred, right?

        • Plus, large distinct features! Babies like large distinct features, right? All that waving little hands and trying to grab your nose?

  2. Congratulations! Being an Aunt is the best. You get all the fun times with the kids and can hand them off to their parents when they act up. 😀

When my cousin had a baby, I put together a collection of lullabies from movies to play to the baby. I’m not sure how much it helped the baby fall asleep but she loved it. Also, the baby is now five and really likes old Tamil songs so there’s that. I’d say start young.

  3. Heartiest of congratulations to you, @Sister, and @Sister’s hubby! What a whole new set of adventures in your lives!

I never particularly liked or disliked babies until I had one of my own. Since then I think all babies are the best – even the screaming ones make me smile 😀

  4. Congratulations on the new arrival, DCIB real life family! First Albie, now a human baby, quite a year :).

Babies are fun, you should go meet him and sniff his head. I recommend the after-all-the-grandparents-have-left-but-before-he-starts-crawling stage. And enjoy the first couple of years, before he starts having his own opinions, to put articles of clothing on him that you find adorable. Perhaps something subtle like:

    • Oh that is PERFECT! Almost worth visiting him just to force his parents to put it on in the tradition of politely-flattering-the-guest.

  5. Congratulations M & family.Babies are lot of work for the parents and fun for others around.I had so much fun being aunt to my nephew and niece but the fun quotient was replaced by exhaustion and a constant sense of anxiety when I had my own babies. Now they are slightly bigger, fun days are back.Oh,take lots of photos,in all poses and clothes-looking back at the baby pics of my kids and nephew and neice is a favorite pass time of mine, brings back lots of memories.

    • Ooo, now I am thinking about the funny things I can do for photo purposes! Sunglasses! Silly hats! Little superhero costumes! Sure the baby will hate it, but I can just take my photo and then hand him off when he starts whining.

  6. Congratulations! I did enjoy being an aunt when my nephews were babies, and one of them got married rather young and I’m now a great aunt, which I’m not super on board with at my still youthful age. But, yay, babies! I think they start getting cute when they can start doing things besides sleep, cry, and poop–smiling, laughing and trying to sit up are pretty fun. And you should have been playing Shahrukh to him in the womb, but maybe it’s not too late if you start exposing him now.

  7. Congratulations to your sister and brother-in-law. Nieces and nephews are always cute because we can just hand them off when they start crying!!

    • Right now he seems to be constantly crying. But then he’s only been alive for 4 days, I’d probably cry too if I had to be all new to the world against my will.

  8. Best wishes for the new mom and child. Here’s hoping the baby has a happy, undramatic life unlike all the Hindi film babies over the decades.

      • I was referring to all those kidnapped, separated traumatized babies in films. But yes, Taimur is a cutie. I do hope your sis and BIL won’t follow Kareena and Saif’s example and name the new baby anything controversial.

  9. Heartiest congratulations! That Anil Kapoor pic crossed with a baby… is a disturbing image! Only silly suggestion I have for a baby boy is to dress him as a girl and take lots of pictures 🙂

    • I believe you are correct! And then once they get a bit bigger, they can practice crawling by climbing up and down the stairs on a quest for old popcorn.

  11. Congrats to your family Margaret!! I actually became an aunt recently as well since my cousin had a baby last month. I don’t have any advice but I will mention that holding my niece when she was just a couple of weeks old was a kind of a scary experience.

    • Thank you! And I will continue to avoid holding very new babies, seems scary.
