Shahrukh Summer/Women Directors Week: What is the Best Shahrukh-Farah Song?

Obviously I am not going to post every single Farah-Shahrukh song, that would be impossible. But I will post a selection and you can use your brains to remember any others that you want to suggest.

I love Farah and Shahrukh together. She knows just how to work within his many many dancing limitations. Gives him nice rhythmic shoulder and elbow and knee movements, avoids the hips, and avoids anything fluid (he can’t do fluid), or slow (slow him down and you start to notice the problems). And on the other hand, Shahrukh trusts her. He will go along with her most ridiculous song ideas, even encourage her farther.

An early one that she got last minute because Saroj Khan was days late. Shahrukh brought her in for it and got her noticed by Yash Raj and Aditya Chopra, and she made the silliest funnest most charming song of the movie. “Ruk Ja O Dil Deewana”

Shiamak Devar gave Dil To Pagal Hai that distinctive Riverdance kind of look. But Farah gave us at least one song of Shahrukh being so charming we don’t even notice how poorly he is dancing. Also, balloons. You know it is a Farah song if there are balloons and/or dancing waiters. “Pyar Kar”

The easy answer is of course “Chaiyya Chaiyya”. Whether the question is “what is Shahrukh’s best dance?” or “what is Farah Khan’s best dance?” or “what is the best dance sequence ever in Hindi film?”

I have to admit to a sneaking affection for this song. It’s just so fun and silly and perfectly captures Shahrukh’s egotism that is half laughing at himself. “Baadshah”

Certainly the most complicated of their songs! 6 stars, each with their own dancing style perfectly captured by Farah, and yet she makes sure that Shahrukh looks the best of them all. “Bole Chudiyan”.

Can Farah make Juhi Chawla sexy and Shahrukh funny? Yes, she can!!! “Osaka Muraiya”

“Ishq Kameena”. Shahrukh and Aish have co-starred in 3 films, including an epic love story, and yet this one dance number has more chemistry between them than all 3 of those films combined.

Speaking of sexy, I love Shahrukh’s kind of joyful alive sexiness in this song. Even with the orange pants. “Preity Woman”

I’ve been focusing on their dance tracks together, but Farah also excels at finding a few strong movements and placing them within a montage song to heighten the emotions. “Mitwa”

As Shahrukh ages, you would think he would slow down. But instead his increasing experience has allowed him and Farah to work out more and more complex dance combinations. The difference between “Ruk Ja” and “Kaike Paan” is immense.

Okay, that’s far from all of them. Essentially if it is a good Shahrukh song, odds are it’s from Farah. Which is your favorite of these? Or which is your favorite that I DIDN’T include?

  1. After much thought, I have to pick movies, not songs. So my fave movies where Farah has choreographed Shah Rukh are: K3G, Paheli, Billu, Don, and Chennai Express.

If I had to pick one song I’d have to toss a coin between Suraj Hua Madham and Chaiyya Chaiyya. Both wonderful, both sexy, otherwise totally different.

    • I just can’t get over the shirts in Suraj Hua Maddham. No one should wear see through torquise polka dots. Not Farah’s fault of course, that’s on Karan, but it ruins the whole thing for me. On the other hand, the red jacket in Chaiyya Chaiyya? Perfection!

      • I know what you mean, but I hate Shah Rukh’s clothes in probably 1/3 of all his songs. So I had to get over that, lol.

Agreed on the red jacket though. The red jacket, the hair, the cheeky smile, it’s so perfectly early Shah Rukh!

  2. Oops- much as Suraj Hua Maddham (the scene leading up (bangles) to it is my absolute most favorite hot SRKajol moment of all time.) As a fan of HNY I am assuming that’s mostly Farah’s choreo (although Geeta Kapoor is listed also as choreographer) and I thought that the final performance was so fun. Literally lights my face up every time.

    • I got to see the SLAM tour for Happy New Year, totally high point of my life, which meant I got to see the ending dance essentially performaned live. It really works as a live performance! The build, the lights, the medley of songs, it’s great. In a way that is just a little bit different from the other songs.

  3. And he can wear as many see-through shirts as he likes 🙂 I’ll keep watching.

From HNY I’m also a fan of Maanva Laage and especially the scene where Deepika imagines him coming up the steps in the bar. Since their romance doesn’t ever take hold until the end of the film, this was a great fantasy moment of them together and beautiful movement.

    • Yes!!!! The trailer version of Manwe Laage cut that moment, and then seeing it included in the full length film version changed my whole feeling about the song. Without it, it is a sweet kind of cheeky why of showing the early stages of a romance. With that moment, it enters into full Epic Love Fantasy territory.

  4. I think my favorite is Ruk Ja O Dil Deewane though I love Mitwa and I didn’t know that Farah did that song as well. I just love Shahrukh’s energy in Ruk Ja!

When Farah directs a movie, does she also choreograph most of the songs in the movies or does she have a certain vision and gives her assistants opportunities?

    • I think Farah did all the songs in Om Shanti Om and Main Hoon Na, in the director’s commentary on the DVD she gets into specifics about what she wanted and why and stuff. But for Happy New Year, I don’t know. Her assistant Geeta Kapoor is listed in the credits, not sure what that means.

I also think (and this is just my opinion) that as Farah has grown as an artist she is less and less interested in the dance moves part of choreography and more in the grand vision of the images. I wouldn’t be surprised if she tells her assistance “I want a fun 1960s feel to the song” and lets them create the moves and teach them to the back-up dancer while she looks at costumes and sets and storyboards the edits and scene changes and the Big stuff.

On the other hand, I think Saroj Khan is the opposite, far more about the actual gestures while the director is the one who takes care of the grand vision.

      • I can see her doing everything for her first two movies but then letting loose a little as she got more experience in directing. I think I would agree with you that she probably focuses more on the big picture part of the song numbers rather than the actual dance moves themselves.

  5. there was such an easy solution to the turquoise see-through horror shirts in Suraj Hua. Karan, tut tut, the solution was to take off the shirt. It’s Egypt. They’re both wet. The weather is hot. Strip him, Karan, Strip him. The script demands it! Do it for the script, Karan.

      • I need to send that job application to Dharma right about now! On that note, have you ever considered reaching out to Dharma to do like, a print interview with Karan about their writing process? Cause you have a lot of insights that he would maybe like to dig into, and I have loved how technical he gets in some interviews when he’s really enjoying talking about film making, and where our ethos as a moviegoing public has evolved over the years. This one in particular:

        • I would love to do a real interview with any of these people, but I’m just a blogger. I’m very proud of the quality of my work and my credentials, and believe I do better work than 90% of the “professional” writers out there, but in terms of real world power and impact I’m just a blogger.

If you know Karan Johar, or anyone else you think it would be interesting for me to interview, send me their contact through the Contact Me link!

  6. you are right, though. Chaiyya Chaiyya wins by an enormous margin, no matter what the question is. My five year old Indian American niece knows that the cute guy in the red jacket dancing on a moving train is also the guy who is Anjali ka papa. So there you go. That’s iconic imagery, that is.

    • It never occurred to me to think of him as “Anjali Ka Papa”, but I have heard that from several people now. I guess I really missed out only seeing KKHH in college instead of as a little girl.
