I love the months between big holidays. Lots of weird funky little low pressure movies that are just kind of fun.
Marjaavaan Trailer
I am so glad that Sid has found his proper place in the world, modest action hero is just perfect for him. He’s got that nice big body that makes him believable in a fight scene, his face is the right kind of handsome for a tormented young gangster/soldier/spy/police/whatever, and he can handle the 15 minutes of backstory and romance required for such roles.
This looks like a perfect Sid movie! Tormented young action hero, falls in love with fragile beautiful woman, evil villain appears and threatens the fragile woman, fight fight fight.
Two things make me nervous. First, can the plot really be this simple? Sid falls in love with Tara Sutaria, Ritiesh kills her, and Sid takes revenge? Surely there is a twist we aren’t seeing, like a shocking surprise that the tormented young hero’s perfect love actually LIVES. That would be different.
Second, Ritiesh is a Little Person? REALLY? Why????
Housefull 4
Well, this is sad! I think this might be my favorite Housefull movie EVER, and it’s cursed with a weird production history that may make me not able to watch it. But the plot idea is SO CLEVER! A reincarnation comedy, making fun of all the big historical epics we’ve had lately. AND coming up with a way to use reincarnation is a set up for a big modern day farce.
The idea of a man dreaming of his past life and waking up to find that he and his two friends and their three girlfriends are all with the wrong people based on their past lives. That fits perfectly with the established logic of reincarnation in film but treats it as comedy instead of tragedy. It’s such a simple idea, I almost can’t believe it hasn’t been used before.
On top of that, the cast! Akshay is always much MUCH easier to take in comedy, with a real flare for it. Bobby Deol is another surprisingly gifted comedy fellow, so long as he loosens up and forgets his dignity. And Ritiesh of course is an old hand at it all. Plus Kriti Sonam, after Arjun Patiala I am all in on her as a comedian. I am content to watch these 4 play off each other however they want.
Okay, I’m not saying it’s going to be an actually high quality movie or anything, but there’s enough there that I want to watch it, which is more than I can say for any previous Housefull movie.
Oh oh! Saand Ki Aankh is coming out the same day, I’ll buy a ticket for that and support true stories about feminist sharpshooters, but actually sneak into the terrible lowbrow reincarnation comedy.

Love it. I saw Ranveer in Padmavat myself, but then I think Ranveer in Padmavat was imitating Kal Drogo too.

Marjaavaan – I LOVE Sid, and I love his gritty roles like Ek Villain and Jabariya Jodi. However, this looks SO DUMB in terms of plot, seems like a carbon copy of Ek Villain with elements of Zero and Kalank, and I worry how it’ll do. But I’m gonna see it anyway.
Housefull 4 – I’ve never seen a Housefull movie. The concept is cool, but I hate the look of Akshay and Kriti as a couple.

I have seen Housefull 3, for random “hey look, it’s playing at the theater near us while we are on vacation” reasons. It was very very VERY bad, briefly saved by some actors with great comic timing. I wouldn’t worry too much about the “couples”, the Housefull couples exist more for purposes of setting up comic dilemmas than as actual couples. Anyway, I will watch it for you all and tell you if it lives up to the concept or not.
Oh good, you and I can go see Marjaavaan together! Along with (I’m guessing) a bunch of teenage girl Sid fans and some teenage boy action fans.

I can already see references to Ek Villain in Marjaavan, I mean Ritiesh whistling Galliyan? I’m gonna watch it anyway, because I love Sid and also because I *really* want to know why he shoots Tara in the trailer because it definitely looked deliberate, even if he looks tormented while he does it lmao

Then the trailer succeeds! I thought it spoiled the whole plot and no one would want to see the movie, but keeping the reason he shoots her back seems like a safe way to force us to go see it.

Why is Sid’s voice so strange in Marjaavan trailer? He sounds like one of the gods in epic movies. Who talks like that on the street? And this serious voice doesn’t match his face and acting at all.
But Ritiesh is great. He should do only roles like this now. The fact his character is so small is ridiculous, but even with this little stature he dominates the screen like a boss. I’m impressed.

Ritiesh is such an odd actor! I am always impressed and entertained by him, but he doesn’t quite fit as a character actor or a comic actor or a lead actor either. He just sort of drifts in and steals the movie from other people and then drifts out again.

Sid’s look is identical to Shahrukh’s in the first half of Happy New Year – the same beard and red headband, the same walk, in some scenes gives exactly the same visual recognition. It’s like he’s channeling Charlie the fighter – coincidence, imitation or is this a trope for that sort of character?

I think I would lean trope? The red headband is a symbol of Krishna and just pops onscreen, and maybe the two movies had the same fight coordinator?

I’m with Angie on the Marjaavaan trailer. Why does Sid’s voice sound like that??? Much like my response to Ek Villain, I think that Ritiesh once again seems great. He also had the only joke where I laughed out loud in the Housefull trailer

Hmmm. Perhaps I would enjoy a Shraddha-less Ek Villain. On the other hand, between this and Saand ki Aankh I’m getting irritated with CGI and makeup being used to make an actor into something instead of hiring an actor who is that thing, if you follow.

I follow perfectly! And in both cases they had the choice of a) hiring an actor who is that thing, or b) not making the characters that thing (there is no reason the Saand Ki Aankh heroines couldn’t spend most of the film in flashback).
Perhaps the best solution would have been to make Shraddha’s character mute in Ek Villain to begin with?
