News Round-Up: Pick Your Most Wanted YRF Film, Brahmastra Delayed Again (SHOCKING!), and Ayushmann in a Dharma Production

I started out with 8 news stories, and then I actually read them, and they all turned out to be bland and blah. Even these aren’t super exciting, but if PR departments care enough to float stories and watch the response, the least we can do is respond.

YRF Releases Multiple Choice Rumor About Upcoming Films

This is the most ridiculous obviously professional and practiced quote, not a “sources” thing, and as the article points out it is one of a series of professional quotes, which are obviously designed to see what the audience is interested in watching so YRF can make plans:

A number of big budget extravaganzas will release next year, including will Akshay Kumar’s Prithviraj, Ranveer Singh’s Jayeshbhai Jordaar and Ranbir Kapoor & Sanjay Dutt’s Shamshera, and a number of speculative projects have been reported – the third part of the Tiger franchise with Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif, Aditya Chopra’s directorial with Aamir Khan in one of the movies and other projects individually (apparently the production house is in talks with these stars) with Ranbir Kapoor, Hrithik Roshan and Akshay Kumar.

“The production house is celebrating fifty glorious years ever since its launch in 1970 and buzz is that many top stars have been headlined for various new projects. However, there has been no official announcement on these projects yet. YRF has always been tight-lipped about its new movies and don’t announce till everything has been signed on the dotted line. A new project that is under discussion is apparently an action drama with Tiger Shroff and Ranbir Kapoor – two of the most talented actors of this generation. Apparently, Adi is very happy with Tiger’s success in War and is keen to do another movie with him. Tiger’s dance and action skills is fantastic and he has been at par in each and every scene with Hrithik (also known for his excellence dance moves and action skills) in the movie. He is already working with Ranbir in Shamshera and is impressed with the star’s dedication to his craft. While it is not finalised whether there will be two different movies with the two stars leading them or one project with both, one would expect any movie with the two stars as a project watching out for!

The source adds, “It’s an interesting co-incidence that the 50th golden jubilee year of YRF also is the 25th year of Aditya Chopra’s Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (DDLJ), which marked his directorial debut. It remains to be seen whether the director himself will announce his next project in 2020 as part of the golden jubilee celebrations of the esteemed production house.”

https://www.bollywoodhungama.com/news/bollywood/exclusive-ranbir-kapoor-and-tiger-shroff-to-appear-together-in-yrf-movie-as-part-of-its-golden-jubilee-celebrations/

They are talking about 2020 releases, you can’t have a release in 2020 of any of these films because there isn’t enough time to make them. What they are really talking about is “which of these movies should we make in 2020? What should we officially announce? What will people be interested in?”

Okay, we’re people! Which of these would we rather:

New Tiger Series Movie

Ranbir-Tiger movie

Adi to direct something new

New YRF film with Aamir Khan

New YRF film with Hrithik Roshan

New YRF film with Akshay Kumar

Brahmastra Delayed Again

Ha hahahahahahahaha!!!! This is not surprising AT ALL!!!!! This time, they say it is because of the special effects (not using Red Chillies, I guess). But I’m assuming the special effects have to wait on the actual filming before they can get started, and seeing as filming is now not expected to be complete until at least next month (Manali schedule still to finish, then a song), I don’t know how they still expected a July release (story here)

Anyway, now it’s winter 2020. Supposedly.

Ayushmann and Dharma

This is mostly frustrating, it’s being reported as “Ayushmann in a rom-com” like he is broadening his horizons or something. But, have people not been watching the latest Dharma releases? Or the older Dharma releases? Wake Up Sid, Ek Main Aur Ek Tu, Dear Zindagi, there’ve been lots of Ayushmann-style small middle-class kind of films that Dharma produced. Anyway, I have to admit they got me mildly curious to see what Karan and Ayushmann do when they get together. (story here)

    • His family is a fascinating question of nature versus nurture in terms of severe depression. Raj had such trauma in his childhood (Raj’s two brothers died of illness and a freak accident the week Shammi was born, at ages 8 and 5 I think, while Raj was 9) that addiction, depression, fear of expressing or feeling love, etc. would be expected. Rishi and Randhir bore the brunt of Raj’s dysfunction causing trauma in THEIR childhood, and so on and so forth. At what point do we say it is a genetic propensity for depression versus trauma that echoes through the generations?

One thing that I find really interesting is that Prithviraj (Raj’s father) by all accounts was a faithful husband, never drank to excess, and remained a healthy weight and a moderate eater through out his life. But every Kapoor since him has tended to infidelity, alcoholism, and food issues. Makes me think maybe Raj’s searing scar of watching his two brothers die altered him on a fundamental level and he turned around and passed that on to others. Especially since Prithviraj seems to have reacted to losing his sons by checking out of parenting and leaving it to Raj to raise his two younger brothers, letting Raj’s trauma affect them to some degree just as it affected his own sons.

  1. Only thing I want out of those is a Tiger series. But only homo erotic action movies or stupid dance movies.

I KIND OF want him and Ranbir to be in a movie together and Ranbir to stick out like the black hole of anticharisma he is but honestly even he is probably not a worse actor than Tiger so idk if it would be the victory I want unless it’s a dance movie. But Ranbir probably thinks a dance movie is beneath him.

    • Clarification: “Tiger” series, would be another Salman-Kat movie, sequel to Tiger Zinda Hai and Ek Tha Tiger. So actually, you want NONE of these. Poor YRF.

I feel like Tiger and Ranbir are such total opposites that putting them in a movie together will end up making them both look bad. Ranbir will be all sad sacky and boring, and Tiger will be all shallow and empty.

      • The opposites thing makes me curious to see them together, weirdly. Ranbir emoting with his big, wet eyes, while stone-faced Tiger leaps about. The dance numbers could be good? And also curious, what is the Venn diagram overlap of Tiger and Ranbir fans ? Would it be fan war or fan lovefest? Even that spectacle would be fascinating to watch, either way really.

        • Okay, you suckered me in with the fan war tease! They are both passionate crowds of young men, but I think otherwise they are total opposites. It would be extremely fun to watch.

          • Maybe they just don’t care enough about the internet? Tiger is consistently racking up bigger box office numbers than Ranbir (barring the occasional Sanju fluke). Seems like Ranbir fans might be all bark and no bite and Tiger fans are the opposite. What we really need is a Tiger movie to release opposite a Ranbir movie.

          • From what I understand, Tiger fans are in small towns and villages more. Their online population would not be so high for that reason. I think Ranbir’s fans are middle to upper-class city guys. Exactly the audience that would be on Twitter and reading reviews and articles.

          • Based on having been dragged to every Tiger movie opening day, I can tell you that the theater is usually full of young men who whoop and holler when he punches people or says stuff or whatever. And he also takes his shirt of A LOT. So I don’t know if he needs the male friendships for the homoeroticism.

Actually, where Tiger shines is in the “jealous/kind of in love” villain dynamic. Here is his villain in Baaghi:

And here is a still from their final confrontation (after the villain has been obsessed with hating Tiger for years)

  2. I haven’t gotten to see WAR yet, but I like looking at Tiger Shroff, I like his face and I like his athletic abilities, so I would like a YRF film with him in it. I would like Aamir to work with Excel again as Talaash is my favorite of his in the last decade. I do want Adi to direct something new, and in honor of 25 years of DDLJ, I want it to be a project that includes SRK & Kajol.

    Like

    • Yes! I am stealing your last wish! If Adi is going to do a new movie for the anniversary, why not make it an SRKajol thing? Neither of them are working right now (officially), let’s get them back together!

Good point about Aamir, his last two YRF films (Dhoom 3 and Thugs) have not really been his most interesting performances, let’s put him with a company that will challenge him.

A character where the need is to inhabit the character inside of the story, instead of trying to hit some theoretical commercial appeal that causes him to tread into caricature.

It feels like he keeps leaning on these derivative concepts lately instead of nurturing stories and writers closer to home, where he might have something more original to say.

Ranbir is Robin, mostly because I want to see him in the stupid outfit, but also because Robin spent a lot of time agonizing about “feelings”.

  3. My vote is for Adi to direct something new and New YRF film with Hrithik. Mainly because I am among the 5 people that loves Befikre and can’t wait to see what he comes up with next. Hrithik because I am shallow and just want to see more of him in glamorous roles, and we all know YRF will likely make Hrithik looks fantastic!

Also, I am not sure how I feel about Ayushmann teaming up with Dharma. I understand Ayushmann is good for Dharma but I am not sure about why Dharma is good for Ayushmann (besides the deep pockets). Dharma has received a of criticism recently and with Ayushmann the expectation and the scrutiny will be extraordinarily high, which can become impossible to meet. Also, I am not sure if Ayushmann has reached the level of power that he can work with the director and producer to change the script to meet his audiances’ needs.

    • I also like Befikre! It wasn’t the best film ever, but it was extremely well-made for what it was, and he definitely stretched the limits of visuals available. Oh, and got really good performances form his leads too.

The nice thing for Ayushmann is that he seems to consistently make multiple films a year. So if the Dharma film works out, fine. And if it doesn’t, fine. Either way he won’t be slotted as a “Dharma actor” because he will be doing other stuff too. If the script and budget and director is good, he can make that commitment without a lot of consequences. Of course if Dharma makes a bad flop movie with Ayushmann, big consequences, since he is now considered the unbreakable hit machine and it would all be blamed on Dharma.

        • Yeah, Forrest Gump only worked because of the Baby Boomers nigh infinite ability to enjoy watching things about themselves. I just don’t see that generation in India being so fascinated with themselves. And then you are just left with an odd character who does a bunch of things, instead of a Metaphor For a Generation.

  5. If Brahmastra had a serious actor in the lead it would release time ago, don’t you think?

I’m not excited about any of those rumored releases, maybe except Aditya’s next film. But did I understand well? It will be with Aamir?

    • YRF is just throwing out everything at this point, I think. If the rumor of an Aamir-Adi film gets traction, they’ll go with that. There is no way all of these rumors are simultaneously true.

I would be okay with Adi-Aamir, just to see what happens when two perfections get together.

      Like

    • And surely YES to Brahmastra!!!!! Dharma has never had a delayed release, Alia has never had a delayed release, even Bahubali 2 was only delayed like 6 months I think. The only equivelant I can think of was Robot 2, but in that case we knew when actual shooting started and CGI began, and the shoot ended on time, it was purely a CGI issue.

      Like

      • There are big VFX projects that released perfectly on time – just last year there was Zero and TOH (very bad VFX but nonetheless) and there were no issues like that. And it’s not like they wait to shoot the whole thing and then do VFX. VFX was done simultaneously as filming was going on for Zero.

I think the big problem is that neither Ayan or Ranbir have the experience to deal with this. Karan Johar is also useless when it comes to movies that require green screens and CGI. None of them know what they’re doing and now they have already spent so much money that they don’t know what to do other than pour more in to at least complete the project.

        • It was always a risky thing, committing to a Superhero trilogy that would not be released for 2 years at least for the first film. What if audience taste changes? What if something else goes wrong? And of course something else HAS gone wrong at this point.

          • The one thing Akshay has right is how quickly he churns out movies. He can move with the trends and won’t get stuck in dead genres or end up doing movies the audience has lost interest in.
Everyone else takes so long to put together and then film the project that you have no idea what environment it is going to release in.
With Bhramasthra, the underestimated how much time and money it would take and kept jumping the gun to take big release dates before someone else can grab them. In effect, they sabotaged themselves because the movie has been in the news for so long that everyone is aware it’s a disaster that keeps getting delayed. It gives it very bad vibes. If they had announced it after all the pre-production was already done and then given a long 2 year time period from the beginning, they would have probably been fine. They’re all in over their head.

Vani Kapoor looks completely off & I can’t get past the strange face.I blame Vani for putting people off the movie before even watching it.So I look forward to Aditya Chopra directing again, unless he decides to cast Vani again. Make a movie with Anushka Sharma& Ranveer Singh again or Hritik & Deepika. I need to see people who are glamorous & can hold my attention – not whiny boys wallowing in self-pity.
