I Am Ready to PART-TAY! New Years, Watch Out!!!!

I am so excited! I think this is the most excited I have been about New Years Eve in years. I am going to have such a great party. With me, myself, and I. And Albie Dog.

I only had to work a half day today, and after the Dog and I left the office, I suddenly thought “ooo! I could stop by Trader Joe’s and pick up fun stuff for tonight!” And then I got to the Trader Joe’s parking lot and realized that, shockingly, I was not the only person who had this thought. After 10 minutes of circling, I finally got a space, and then I went inside to fight off hoards of other people doing last minute shopping. But I am pretty proud of what I accomplished.

For the cocktail course, starting at about 4pm, I will have salmon dip and crackers, sardines, and stuffed grape leaves.

And then for the main course, frozen “Champignons” pizza and roast vegetables. The vegetables are just for fun because usually I can’t justify buying the fancy frozen vegetables. But the “Champignons” pizza is because I kind of wanted a tiny single serving bottle of Champagne so I could have two sips, gag, and throw out the rest. Only the liquor laws just changed and you can’t sell single servings any more, and I’m not buying a full size bottle just to pour it down the sink. But the pizza is the same thing!

And then for my late night dessert as I ring in the new year with the dog, Sparkling Apple Cider (they were sold out of the fancy bottles with the corks but I think this one might actually taste better) and Dark Chocolate Lava Cake. What a great way to start the new year! With Dark Chocolate Lava.

But wait, there’s more! After I go to bed at 12:20, I sleep sleep sleep, then get up and walk the dog and have coffee, and then settle in for our tweetalong and my festive New Year Breakfast. I was going to make pancakes, but that is so much work. And then I was going to get delivery pancakes, but then I have to interact with people and pay money and stuff. Instead, frozen fancy pancakes! And French bread! And fancy maple syrup! So excited for breakfast.

And finally, post tweetalong, I will have actual nutritional food to stave off my sugar crash, and also ensure prosperity in the New Year-black eyed peas! The store was having a special, which makes me nervous, because can all of us have prosperity in the New Year? What if my black eyed peas are less potent because everyone else in Chicago is eating the same thing?

But overall, a very successful shopping trip. And now I can settle in and watch an entire season of a Netflix show, or the whole Disney “Descendants” trilogy, or something else that is 9 hours straight and usually I can’t do all at once. But it’s New Years Eve! I can go WILD!!!!!!

  1. Have fun, toots! My sis and BIL (Rishi Jr) and the kids coming in about an hour. He’s bringing 3.5 lbs of shrimp just as an appetizer. There are 7 of us total. And 2 are kids who aren’t crazy about cold shrimp. So after my 14 oz of shrimp we pickup a BBQ dinner from Lucilles…brisket, pulled pork etc. And biscuits. Many biscuits. Many many biscuits. Oh and cupcakes. And I’m making everyone watch HNY, because, 2020. Kiddos will be taking pics with my birthday party backdrop and maybe Shahrukh will make an appearance.

  2. Oh, I love this plan. I drank a half an espresso an hour ago just so I can stay awake until midnight because apparently it’s frowned upon to pass out on the couch during a party.

Also, I love salmon dip and sardines on crackers. Have you ever had whitefish dip and/or pickled herring?? Soo delicious!

    • So excited about the salmon dip and crackers! I might break those out first. I think I did herring dip last year, and it was delicious. Oh, and I think herring is supposed to be good luck for New Years? Or something? Anyway, I am sure salmon will be just as good.

      • Oh, salmon dip is delicious and it also tastes amazing the next morning on a bagel. Also, way to load up on the D3 without taking any pills!

Happy New Year! Hope 2020 brings you as much joy as you bring us!

          • How are the food-filled festivities so far? We just finished eating at our favorite Thai restaurant and are heading to my sister’s house for a small party. Really really hoping I can stay away until midnight.

  3. SRK’s New Year’s message

We went to a Brazilian steakhouse and ate ourselves into a food coma and now we’re lounging around until midnight. Perfect NYE!

    • Thank you! That is the exact message to make me happy on New Year. Oh Shahrukh! So kind and loving and nice.

I’ll tell you how 2020 is as soon as it gets here, a little 2 hours earlier preview.

  4. Quiet, yummy-snack filled night at home with hubby but I had to go pick up a child from a party at 2.00am ( I am such an indulgent mother!) so filled in the last hour before I went watching the start of Humsafar. So far so good. It’s quite slow paced but that’s not a problem for a long running show.

New Year so far has been in a dense smoke haze. There are terrible bushfires along the east coast of Australia and the smoke is settling inland, across Canberra, where I live. It’s been going on for days but today is the worst – you can only see metres ahead and your eyes sting as soon as you step out the door. Everyone is walking around in gas masks and we have our evacuation plans ready if fires start up here. I keep picturing a future where record temperatures and air quality is like this permanently, its pretty scary. I need a little ShahRukh comfort so I’m glad he tweeted.

    • Oh man, I don’t think I would ever be a good enough mother to pick up my child at 2am. I was pretty resentful of taking the dog out at 10:30.

  5. At 3:30 I discovered that our family’s two closest friends were coming over at 4:30. But it was all good, the neighborhood market was still open. We had roasted pinyon pine nuts, popcorn with kelp seasoning (a friend from Alaska gave it to me for christmas, actually it is very tasty, go kelp!), cabbage salad, BBQed tri-tip, a friend brought beer soaked brats, and another friend brought seasoned ruffled lays potato chips with a homemade thick creamy dip, which I decided then and there was the definition of America. We had store bought lemon meringue pie, berry crumble, and vanilla ice cream for desert. During desert the SRK card in the creche was discovered and the children (who weren’t even my own) got to explain to the adults who SRK is. That was kinda awesome. The children toasted the new year with wine glasses of sparkling cider at 9 PM, but the adults, who had been sipping beer and champagne all evening, largely ignored any new years toast. By 10 PM everyone went home.

Now, after watching War and tweeting for the first time, I have a new years day of laundry and laundry and laundry ahead of me. We have no black eyed peas. I forgot about that tradition, and I really like black eyed peas, so I’m a little jealous.

    • Your New Years Eve party sounds really nice, and pretty much the only kind of New Years party I would want to attend. Also, I am assuming you are in a mild climate, and now I am jealous and looking forward to summer.

I also am considering laundry. I procrastinated with the holidays and let two weeks build up. Being in a non-mild climate, my back stairs are all iced up which means it probably isn’t a good idea to try going up and down and up and down with big things of laundry, so the rest of my day looks like trying to find a laundromat that is open and doing as much laundry as possible while I can.

And so happy the tweet worked for you! I loved having you, and wasn’t it a great way to start 2020?

      • Yes, and in my family Hrithik has a new name, the kids refer to him as Bang Bang. Not the Bang Bang guy or the actor from Bang BAng, but that is now his actual name. I’m not allowed to like Tiger because he turned evil, I’m only allowed to root for Bang Bang.

        • These are excellent rules. I am resisting the urge to start calling Hrithik “Bang Bang” on the blog. I may not be able to resist.
