Saturday Small Talk: Chat Away While I Bask in the Glow of Street Dancer 3D

Happiness is exhausting! I had such a great time at the movie last night, and then I came home and was so tired I just went to sleep. I’m writing the review now, you can all talk to entertain yourself while I do that.

Huh. What to talk about? My mind is weirdly blank. There’s no new trailers since Ayushmann’s thingy thing, I haven’t written my Street Dancer review yet so I can’t tell you anything about that without spoilers, and all the news items look dull dull dull to my very particular taste (“Deepika might be cast in Krrish 4 or might not we don’t know!” I hate those kinds of stories).

Well, I’ll just go general. Varun Dhawan, who just had his first film release since the disaster that was Kalank, how do we all feel about him?

Shraddha Kapoor, do we still hate her or have we come around to kind of liking her? (I may have come around)

It’s Chinese New Year! How do we feel about that? Is anyone wearing red?

Okay, now you all go!

    • I also might or might not be cast in Krrish 4!

And I am currently working on a script for Shahrukh Khan, also.

  1. Two years ago I couldn’t stand Shraddha but now I really like her. I still think she is not a good actress, but I see her trying and working hard and she doesn’t ruin the movies anymore (at least for me). I also read she is one of the nicest celebrities.

    • You know what makes the difference for me? She isn’t taking the roles where she might ruin the movie. Being a bad actress is something you can’t necessarily help, but don’t take a role in something that requires good acting if you can’t hack it and end up ruining the entire film. Shraddha does the heroine in Saaho, in Street Dancer 3, in Baaghi 2, and she is perfectly fine in those roles.

      • Yes. I was afraid to watch Stree because I though she will be terrible and will ruin the movie. But she was ok, and it was a nice surprise. Surely a better actress would add more complexity to this role, but what Shraddha did was sufficient to make the movie work. The same with Half girlfriend. I was thinking that maybe I like it because I had my eyes only on Arjun. But the same can be said about Namaste England, and in NE I was aware how bad Parineeti is.

        • Yes! Because of her script choices, Shraddha doesn’t ever actual ruin a movie. She doesn’t save it, but she doesn’t ruin it and that’s more than can be said for a lot of actresses.

  2. I’ve always liked Shraddha, so I’m happy to see that you might be coming around. I want to her see her explore her maternal heritage more and do a Marathi movie. Imagine if the super-commercial Shraddha Kapoor did an performance-oriented indie Marathi movie that left us all gobsmacked.

I’ve been dreaming up a story with a Bollywood cast. Abhimanyu Dassani, Pranutan Bahl, Vivaan Shah, Mithila Palkar, Harsh Kapoor and Tripti Dimri (all my favourite young’uns, basically). It can be a series, so that every character gets equal screen time. The whole lot of them can university buddies in their twenties, and the series can explore their journeys navigating work pressures and relationships over a number of years. More broadly, it can be an examination of whether the the friendships made in the shelter of school can really last through adulthood.

(Not-so-subtly inspired by the likes of YJHD and Chhichhore, heh.)

    • Something to keep in mind with your development, Vivaan Shah is freakishly tall! So cast him opposite Pranutan so them can be similar heights, or Mithila so you can work the sweet sight gag of this huge man and tiny little woman.

Also, Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na.

      • Yes, to everything Nikki said! I always liked Shraddha! To me, she’s the adorable, relatable, girl next door. Basically Joey Potter from Dawson’s Creek, who I also loved. Further proof of that, to me, is that so many boys that grew up with Shraddha – Varun, Tiger etc- have said that they had a crush on her in school. I can totally see that.

I would be so excited to watch a fun Marathi rom-com with her.

      • It’s Vivaan-Mithila, Abhimanyu-Pranutan and Harsh-Tripti- at the start, anyway. Whether they stick together at is another question

(Although in an industry that boasts of Abhishek Bachchan, Aditya Roy Kapur and Vicky Kaushal, Vivaan doesn’t strike me as particularly tall.)

    • Ha! Someone’s gonna have to be the pink line! The lamest line. It’s pink, it’s short, it’s new, it’s dumb. I’m 4th generation Red Line, but we are kind of evil and yuppie now. Yellow line is weird, it only has two stops (and used to just have one before they opened the new station). Wow, you should be an NBA PR person, you have almost gotten me to want to watch these games just so I can cheer for my favorite train line.

      • Lol! I know that the blue and red ones are for the main game and the purple/orange jerseys are for the rising stars game. There are two other games being played as well (The celebrity basketball game and something else that I forgot) so I guess the other colors are for those. You should totally check out the events during all star weekend. Usually the events that happen on Friday and Saturday like the dunk contest and the celebrity game are a lot of fun!

        • My immediate thought was that Blue and Red for the main game is classism and racism since those are the two richest/whitest lines. But then I thought no, those are just the two brightest clearest colors. And THEN I thought “I bet those two lines got the brightest clearest colors in the first place because of Racism!”

  3. Prepare for my onslaught of comments on your Street Dancer reviews because I’m seeing it in a few hours. I got emails that your reviews posted and they’re so tempting to click on and read but I’m not doing it.
I’ve loved Varun since the beginning. It’s not his fault Kalank was bad–on the contrary, he was the best character. I don’t think I ever hated Shraddha, and I don’t love her, but she’s good at what she does, even if she does a lot of the same things over and over. When Illegal Weapon came out, I watched it at least 20 times. I think it’s so much better than Garmi, both as a song and a video. She’s a fantastic dancer, she was great in ABCD2, and I don’t want Nora to overshadow her because she’s the hot new thing right now. Shraddha deserves praise and respect for her skills.

    • I really want to respond but I don’t want to spoil anything! Street Dancer is all you would hope it would be. So, you know, not deep. But if you liked ABCD2, you will like it!

      • That’s what I worry about though, I didn’t like ABCD2. I thought it was boring, and I wanted a better love story for Varun and Shraddha. So I’m nervous.

    • I think if SRK ever sends secret messages, he does it to mess with us and not because they are real messages. That seems more Shahrukh-y than bothering with actual secret messages when he could just say things.

  4. I don’t think Shraddha’s an amazing actress but she’s reached the point where she doesn’t actively ruin a movie for me. However I think Shraddha is great in songs! She seems to be really expressive in them! She also seems to be a nice person in real life so that’s nice. I’ve liked Varun for a while now and genuinely think he has talent

    • This is a really good Shraddha role. Lots of dancing, lots of being pleasant and nice, not any real emotional depth or “acting”.
