Let us acknowledge our petty dislikes! Who is someone you just can’t make yourself like? To the point of avoiding films you might otherwise enjoy?
I’ll start!
Ranbir Kapoor: It started with my just disliking the kind of character he tended to play, but now I actively do not enjoy watching his performances. The wide eyed look, the devilish smile, I just hate all of it!
Randeep Hooda: I like him as a person, and in an objective way I understand he is a good actor, but I just hate his face. I don’t know why, something about the way the features are put together is displeasing to me to the point of making it hard for me to watch him. Maybe in a former life someone who looked just like Randeep did something horrible to me or something.
Aishwarya Rai: There are the very occasional Aish performances I enjoy, but most of the time I find her nails on the chalkboard irritating. The overly mannered expressions, the fragile little voice, the way it feels like she is always more in love with the camera than her co-star, I hate it!
How about you? Who is the person that, if they are in the cast, you will just not watch the movie even if otherwise you would enjoy it?

I liked him in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai as the summer camp manager – esp. his combo with SRK’s mother. Liked him in Bazigar, Nayak, etc.
I don’t like him in recent movies, where he’s doing Telugu comedy uncle (Brahmi) kind of roles.

Yes! The way he and Farida play off each other in KKHH is my favorite Johnny Lever performance, though Farida should get part of the credit. She’s great at comedy.

For some reason, I just can’t stand Deepika. I don’t think she is a good actress at all and I find her diction irritating as hell.
As for the men, Ajay Devgn! Think he is too wooden.

I felt the same about Deepika! And then suddenly didn’t. It was the strangest thing. I tolerated her in OSO, didn’t like her at all in Bachne Ae Haseeno, and then suddenly she was in Chennai Express and I loved her.
Ajay, I always like. Even though I know he is wooden and all that, I still just enjoy watching him onscreen. It’s an inexplicable “like”. Maybe I should put up another post for those?

Aamir. I just do not like him. I don’t like his movies, I don’t like his acting, I don’t like how he behaves off-camera. I just do not enjoy him. The weird thing is that I realize there is nothing inherently wrong with him but somehow everything about him irritates me. Nowadays I also severely dislike the way he looks which isn’t really his fault but it is what it is.

Priyanka Chopra. This one is iffy because I detest her off-screen but she is tolerable for me onscreen.
The thing connecting all of them is that I think I really dislike people who seem self-important. These 3 think the sun shines out of their.. you know what.

Aamir doesn’t irritate me, more of an eye roll and a “well, there goes Aamir being Aamir” feeling. But I can totally see how he could irritate someone else! The limited acting options, the self-important interviews, the bad hair/clothes choices, it’s all not great.
Be proud of your Neena Gupta feelings! I am a great believer in the “I don’t have to like this person just because everyone else does”. And I’m not saying you have made me not like her, but I am saying you have made me pay closer attention and think about if I actually like her or am just going with the flow.
PC: I didn’t like her onscreen before I didn’t like her off-screen. Now I don’t like both places, but I can tell you it is possible to have the reverse feeling. She is another one with a limited range and options and after seeing too many movies in a row, I just got sick of the same line deliveries and stuff. And yes, I will avoid a movie she is in just for that reason.

Ha, I love Aamir though I often find him a wee bit (see what I did there?) ridiculous. I just find his off-screen persona amusing. I’m not too happy that he is no longer tackling the challenging parts and would love to see him play a villain since he’s good at being a dick onscreen.
I fully adore Neena and love that she’s had a career revival late in life. She’s iconoclastic and has always done things her way and I respect her for that.
Priyanka isn’t a great actress but I find her very entertaining as a personality. She’s just so deliciously transparent in her desire for fame and attention.

You know the original dream casting of DDD was Kareena and Ranbir in the PC and Ranveer roles? Totally delightfully meta. I would have adored Kareena in that role, but then I would have had to put up with Ranbir opposite her. Quite the pickle.

I have mixed feelings about both Ranbir (sometimes like his films, think he’s the ultimate bad boy/f***boy in real life but he’s oddly sexy in his off-screen interviews) and PC (self-important to the point of obnoxiousness…that’s why she’ll never make it past B list celebrity in the US, but there are several Bollywood movies where I grudgingly say she’s great). But I find them oddly compelling as a jodi. I really couldn’t stand Kareena for the longest time, also because of K3G. But then I saw her a bunch of other movies, and turns out a lot of the time I really love her! Jab We Met, Dev, Hulchul, Veere Di Wedding, I just love her.

As for me, the only actor I boycott in not watching his movies anymore is Akshay Kumar (since his placative patriotic focus and the increasing women-demeaning behaviour). Otherwise, I surely choose movies because of my interest (unfortunately, I increasingly lack the time, even watching TV has become a once-in-a-month thing).

BTW, I saw Mannat! And it’s just a house right on the road where literally anyone can walk up to the front gate and look at his front yard. That kind of freaked me out. Same with Salman’s house. But on the other hand, if your only comment on a question like “what is SRK’s best hair?” is “I don’t like SRK”, not helpful! But I think you have commented on stuff like “what is SRK’s best performance?” because you can answer that honestly and helpfully!
Yep, just a house! Although on big days, or when the family is running around in the yard, I think security is higher. Amitabh’s house is just a house too. It’s kind of fascinating how the stars have created this system of “come see me on Sundays and holidays but not other days”. The rest of the time, their house is just normal, and then it goes insane once a week or so.

I usually have that reaction to genes or directors but not to actors.
So if I had to choose one I’d go with Varun Dhawan. I got a “make way folks, I
here comes your next superstar!” vibe from him offscreen in interviews, so i wasn’t inclined to see his films. Smarmy entitled smile, and sucking the air from every group interview.
I’ve come around on him though. Same GF through his whole career, seems liked by his peers and directors. I think October exposed his limitations, but he definitely looked like he was giving it the old college try. And nowadays when i see him in things, i like him as well as anybody else, no more no less.

I hate PC–she’s had so much work done on her nose and lips that she looks like a muppet. I find it disturbing to watch her. I also can’t stand her affectations and ego–the huge wide mouthed laugh she got from Julia Roberts (whom I also dislike). I cringe when she and Jonas come up on my screen. She seems to be a real publicity hound; I was really annoyed by that interview she did coyly admitting her favorite object was a jacket she stole from a boyfriend, knowing that SRK has been photographed a lot in that jacket. Whether she bought it herself to fuel the rumours of an affair with him, or they really did hook up and she took it, it is completely classless to out him as her lover, given that he a married man. In the same way, if he did have an affair with her, I would consider it vulgar for him to fuel that same rumour.
The only male actor I dislike is Ranbir Kapor. With that hangdog sullen expression and arrogance, I just don’t get him as leading man material.

I feel this way about most male actors, except for the ones I like, and a few I am meh about (like SSR, SRK, a few others). Even Aamir, whom I dislike but am also attracted to. I especially dislike Ranbir, Rishi Kapoor, and Akshay though. But that is only slightly more than I dislike everyone else.
Most female actors I am fine with. I dislike Kangana and Rekha, but that’s based more on their personal lives, and in fact I love Rekha as an actress and will watch her if necessary.

Rishi is slightly more bearable older but honestly just because he has less screen time and the movie doesn’t expect me to find him atractive. All I see when I look at him is an alcoholic bag of potatoes when old, and an alcoholic bag of flour when young.

As I’ve extensively discussed, I really dislike Emraan Hashmi onscreen despite the fact that he’s a nice guy and not a bad actor and his kid had cancer. I wish him all possible happiness and success in life, I just don’t want to watch movies that have him in them.
Agree with you about Aish, although she has a few performances that I like all the more because I hate most of them—Guru, Raincoat, Chokher Bali. In most of her performances she just does this. . . .thing. “Look at me being beautiful and carefree!” “Now I’m being beautiful and sad!”
The tide seems too have turned for Kat and people are praising her rather than criticising, but she’s still really limited and I don’t find her terribly interesting. But, again, I want her to be happy.

YES! Aish’s underlying character note is always “I’m beautiful”. Kind of makes it hard to lose yourself in the story.

Fun discussion! I have so many actors I don’t like and many of them have been already mentioned.
People I don’t want to watch ever:
– Akshay Kumar because he is the worst (on and off screen)
– Kangana because she is..Kangana. I’m not able to watch her movies anymore because I keep thinking how crazy she is. Panga looks like my kind of film, but I don’t plan to watch it ever.
– Sonam Kapoor because she is so bad actress. I tried and just can’t force myself to see her on screen. I skipped Veere di Wedding, couldn’t finish The Zoya factor because of her
– Naga Chaitanya – telugu version of Sonam Kapoor ; my biggest nightmare would be rewatching Savyasachi
– Anaya Pandey I didn’t like her from Day 1 and also don’t like when somebody is forced on me
People I don’t like much but can watch if the movie is worth it:
– Alia
– Varun Dhavan
– Aamir Khan (still haven’t seen 3 Idiots, and Maddy is in it)
– Karthik Aryan and Kiara Advani – they are in everything
– Regina Cassandra – I don’ know why, but I don’t like her.

I also have a pretty severe aversion to Aamir. I just don’t think he’s that great of an actor and in recent films (Dhoom 3, PK, even parts of 3 Idiots (which I like overall) he is absolutely unwatchable). It’s like he was trained by French mimes and I find mimes pretty freaking creepy. I put up with him when he picks a good story like Dangal and Talaash, but every time I try to watch one of his older films to see if I like him better then…I hardly ever find him attractive (he looks like a Saved By the Bell reject with those high wasted jeans and feathered hair). I found his performance in Rang De Basanti pretentious. And isn’t there a weird thing about kissing in his earlier films (Akshay Kumar and Ajay Devgn are the obvious macho misogynists in the industry, but I have my doubts about Aamir, too).
I really dislike PC, but often like her performances and hate myself for it.
Karthik Aryan is a terrible actor and I hope he goes away soon. He seems harmless enough off-screen…like the dorky kid that all of a sudden is really popular with the girls.
Shraddha Kapoor still has yet to truly impress me and she’s bland as bland can be in every way.
I keep trying to watch Telugu films with Samantha and Nani and I find them both unwatchable for some reason. Same with Mahesh Babu who I think looks like a muppet.

And Sanjay Dutt – I Cannot Stand Him. When he was young and handsome, his eyes were so dead. Now that he’s older and ugly, his eyes are still dead. Actually, his eyes remind me of Boris Karloff’s eyes as the monster in Frankenstein. Both give me the creeps.

I used to hate Rishi but I loved him with Dimple in Bobby and Pyaar Mein Twist and now I appreciate his older roles and tolerate his younger roles.
The two I loathe at the moment are Anupam and Akshay because of their Modi support and Akshay’s misogynistic and jingoistic roles. I know you don’t like to talk politics on the blog but seriously those two are like the distaff Leni Riefenstahls of the Indian right wing. I can’t deal.

I don’t like Amitabh Bachchan. (runs and hides) Just can’t get myself to like him. Something about his onscreen energy really puts on edge. And not in a good way. His politics bothers me too.

When I was at the Red Chilies building meeting someone from Film Companion I confessed I didn’t like SRK’s acting and he was highly amused at me saying that in Shahbucks (what they call the Starbucks in the lobby). I did whisper it tho, I’m not completely crazy 😆

I’ve heard of him harassing women before but didn’t want to give credence to rumors but if true then it’s disgusting. At his age too? Not that it wasn’t disgusting when he was younger. Having a mistress is bad enough but harassing women is criminal behavior. And this is the guy we’re all supposed to idolize?

I do want to jump in and say that I have casually met and spoken with various people who actually met Amitabh, or know someone directly who met him, and I have only heard that he is gentlemenliness and graciousness personified. Doesn’t mean the rumors aren’t true necessarily, but if we are sharing rumors, I feel obligated to share the things I have been told directly, not through rumor.

None of the current lot interests me to be honest, but there are only a few that I would say that I “actively dislike” to point of not being able to enjoy a movie they’re in unless other aspects of the film are so overwhelmingly appealing that I can ignore the one I dislike.
Salman Khan – terrible actor, terribly unattractive and a murderer. Have not watched a movie of his since “Dabbang” and will not watch one ever again no matter who else is in it.
Priyanka Chopra – So, so..plasticky.
Katrina Kaif – I was neutral on her for the longest time then I actually watched her films, and…No. Can’t act, isn’t pretty and I find the fact that she still can’t render even one line of Hindi dialogue correctly inexcusable and…disrespectful.
Sharmila Tagore – Unbearably affected and very cold on-screen presence. Think she’s lovely off-screen though.

Now I need to rewatch Sharmila movies! Just curious, have you seen her recent stuff? Like Eklavya, or Death in the Gunj? I feel like she is so real in those. Although A Death in the Gunj kind of picked up on that coldness you mention, her character isn’t able to express her feelings when she really really needs to.

I don’t think I dislike someone to the point that I can’t watch them. Maybe Salman, because in the last ten years he has become unrecognizable from the earlier Salman who I liked. The ones I do dislike, it’s for their views or behavior off-screen, so I won’t seek out their work. Those people would be Kangana, Ajay, Akshay. I might still watch their films if there are other compelling factors though. Like I wanna watch Good Newzz(!) for Kareena but not Tanaji even for Saif, Kajol. I can still go back and watch Queen, TWM of Kangana but won’t see anything post those. At this point, only way I’ll see a movie with her is if say SRK stars in it (I hope he never does!)!

Salman is the one who I think age/illness has been most visibly harmful too. It’s not as simple as appearance, he seems to have various locked up muscles everywhere from his face to his back and it means he can’t move easily any more.

For me it’s Hrithik. I wish him well, and I don’t mind watching him dance, but his face bothers me, and I haven’t seen him in a role where I thought he could act. (Mind you, I haven’t seen many of his movies, so that isn’t really saying much.) I’m so intrigued by how much folks around here liked War, but I don’t think I can bring myself to watch it.

Shocking! Well, I guess I can see it, his face certainly has an impact beyond his performance. So if you don’t like it, that kind of kills the whole thing. If you ever do feel like watching him acting, I vote Agneepath! But it’s dark and violent, so not necessarily your kind of thing.

We’ve discussed before how Hrithik’s features and body shape are actually kind of freakish but for most people they somehow combine to create jaw-dropping beauty. However, I can totally see how it could tip over into yikes creepy, especially in his earlier bad acting roles.

Ranbir bc duh. Kareena. Akshay. Those two specifically are way too overhyped in my opinion. Everyone in the world seems to love and care about them so much, and I just…don’t. I watched an Ajay music video and he wasn’t even trying to dance while the girl was killing it and I couldn’t stop rolling my eyes at the double standard of it all. Sonam is so fake. I’ll come back if I think of anyone else.

Yeah, well, Ajay never really danced. But he makes up for it by doing his own stunts!
Obviously I am there with you on Ranbir. So irritating to watch onscreen both in a “I don’t like his face” kind of way and in a “I don’t like his acting” kind of way.

I’m late to this but I don’t like Deepika’s dialogue delivery and she’s overhyped. She has screen presence and she chooses good movies but as far as her acting skills, I think her dialogue delivery is annoying and her expressions are often frozen. Kind of like Emma Watson in the later Harry Potter films and in her other newer films.
BUT Deepika isn’t always bad. She just sucks in certain roles. I found her performance in Bajirao Mastani weird, this like weird blank face, annoying kind of dialogue delivery. Same with Padmavaat, the performance was all in the jewels and sets and all, nothing special in her acting. Even in Tamasha, it seemed very rehearsed. I know she got praise for that role and a lot of people saying she was the best thing in the film but her face often had no natural progression of expression. No change from seconds to seconds. Kind of like frozen and calculated.
BUT she was actually really good in Piku and I didn’t see Ram Leela but I’ve seen the songs and heard she gave a natural, passionate performance in that and from the songs I can kind of see it. And in Cocktail too, I think part of the popularity was her character (the provocative girl kind of character that wasn’t that common in romcoms at the time) but she did do a good job and leave a mark. Part of it was just the personality of the character that was going to attract attention no matter who played it, since romcoms often have the good girl or “in love with relationships” kind of character, but I do have to give her performance credit too, she did well. But Piku was the movie where I watched it and didn’t see her as Deepika at all, I saw her as the character. And it’s a movie where I feel she suited it perfectly and I can’t see anyone else doing it (maybe Rani)

actually I realized she was good in Chennai Express too, but I didn’t like her in Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani. So she actually seems to do good in movies where her character has a strong, vibrant kind of personality instead of the quieter, more refined/ reserved characters.

I can see that. I liked her in the second half of YJHD more than the first half, and that’s when she got to be confident and in charge.

I get what you mean about Randeep Hooda; I had a similar problem when I saw him popp up for the first time in movies like Heroine or Cocktail. There was something weird about his facial movements which annoyed me. But since I’ve seen him in Bombay Talkies and Highway I completely changed my mind: I totally love him now and find him super attractive and extremely underrated! I am glad that Netflix is now offering him a chance to be seen in more bigger films. I also had a strong dislike for Katrina Kaif growing up, which was mostly due to her woodden performance in Jab Tak Hain Jaan and her lack of chemistry with Shahrukh. I also hated the fact that it was HER (from all the actresses) that Shahrukh decided to break his “no kissing rule” for (petty I know). But I came around after a few years, got over my jealousy and gave her another chance and watched some of her other movies: And now she has become one of my absolute favorites!..
Anyways, I wholeheartedly agree that I can’t stand seeing Ranbirs Kapoor on any movie screen anymore. He might be a good actor but it’s getting tiring seeing him in that “wheepie man-child” role all the time (he’s way to comfortable and celebrated for playing the same character all the time). Plus he seems to be a total a-hole in real life and treats women kind of badly so..
I am also bored by Alia Bhatts face. The only movies I’ve found her good in were Raazi and Gullyboy. In every other thing I can’t freaking stand seeing her anymore! Her voice hurts my ears and those flaring nostrils she has everytime she fake-cries ugh She looks like a child throwing a temper tantrum and I just can’t take her seriously.
Another actress that irritates me is Sara Ali Khan. There’s just something uber cringey to her acting that makes me shutter. I kind of prey for her to fade out of the industry as soon as she turns 30 lol
And another actor I could never warm up to is Arjun Kapoor. His energy level always seems to be on the lowest of low which is why I feel as if his presence on screen immediately drags down the whole film. I just want to sleep as soon as I see his tired-stupid face.

I also came around on Kat! Maybe it’s that the more I watched her, the more I was able to see and appreciate the work she did film by film? It’s subtle, but she is performing and changing characters as she goes along.
Yes I am bored by Alia’s face! I want her to try totally different characters, and totally different looks to go along with them. I think if she had the right hair and make-up and played, say, a successful doctor, she could feel like something new to us again. But instead she seems to go set to set with barely a change in her look. She looks pretty and all, that’s good, but she’s gotta try to shake things up.
Give Sara time! She’s only had 3 movies, and one of them was an action heroine role without much to do (Simmba). I could see her surprising us all with something really special in movie 4.
Arjun, I feel opposite. His last few movies definitely low energy and dull dull dull. But his first few movies were so exciting! He has it in him to give a really blockbuster performance, just doesn’t. I have hope for Sandeep Aur Pinky, if it ever releases, his performance in the trailers felt different there.

Yes for Alia! I don’t remember which of her movies I saw first but I do remember I thought: Was she filming those movies at the same time , because her acting, her clothes, her dancing was identical.

And they weren’t bad performances! She was just cast in a bunch of roles that were so similar, she could play them well without changing anything about herself.
