Discussion Post: What Not Very Talented Actor Do We Irrationally Like?

I already did “not very famous”, but this is something slightly different. These people may or may not be famous, and they have no talent, but we like them anyway. Why???

It’s really not fair, is it? They aren’t that talented, and yet I still do a silent cheer when life goes their way, just because I like them.

Shraddha Kapoor: She’s so nice! And smiles so sweet! And tries not to take roles that are beyond her. And everyone she works with seem to like her. Forgive me, I like her too and I find myself thinking “oh yay, Shraddha got that good heroine role in the bubblegum pop fun movie! She’ll do great in it”.

Sid M. Doubling up on Sid! He was in my “not famous but I like him” post too. He’s nice too, and kind of boring, and kind of not that talented. But he works hard, and he’s so pretty, so I find myself going “did he get this role based on merit or connections? Eh, don’t care, just happy for him!”

Katrina Kaif: I do think she is a better actress than she gets credit for, but she is also far from the most talented one around. But she’s had such a hard life! And Ranbir dumped her! I just want her to be famous and successful and have everything she wants.

Oh shoot, all my people are very very attractive. Turns out, I am shallow in my likings. I’m only human! I can’t help myself!

Anyway, who are your “I know they aren’t talented but I just like them” people?

  1. I have to agree with all of your picks. Of the three, the one who I like the least is Katrina. But she’s so intelligent when it comes to interviews, that someone like that deserves success. I’m rooting for success in her personal life.
Shraddha, you nailed it, she’s so NICE and SWEET and LOVELY and PRETTY. I can’t watch anything she’s in without smiling. She’s also an incredible dancer. And she’s really good at staying in her lane as sweet, nice romantic interest girl in movies.
Sid, on the other hand, hasn’t found his lane yet. But he’s working so hard to get there, and I just love his face so much. But to prevent this being completely biased towards handsome people, I’m sticking by the hard work thing as to why I love him.
I’m also adding Tiger Shroff to the list. I haven’t seen his entire filmography, I don’t plan on it, and the only movie of his I thoroughly enjoyed was War. But he’s like a combination of Shraddha and Sid, in the sense that he seems like such a nice person and a really stand up guy, not coasting by on his good looks, genuinely cares about people and his work, works really hard, and is good at staying in his lane with big dumb action movies where he spends 30% of the movie punching people and it makes up for him having very little acting skill. I have to applaud that ethic.

    • I will accept Tiger! Except I keep waiting for the other shoe to drop with him, he’s getting more and more successful and I feel like at some point it has to go to his head. Sid and Shraddha and Kat, I feel like they already had a high peak and then a drop and they have handed both gracefully.

        • The fact that Tiger took time off to start a gym gives me hope. Eye on the money and the longterm stability, not short term success.

    • Sid was surprisingly good in Ittefaq too, but unfortunately most of his scenes were opposite Akshay Khanna, and no one is noticing Sid’s acting when Akshay is on screen.

  2. I second (third?) all the above choices (Tiger too) with the same reasons and add:

Aishwarya Rai – I know she isn’t much liked here, but I somehow cannot hate her. She is beautiful and it has worked to get her jobs so far, her acting prowess is up to the director mostly and she talks very pronounces and rehearsed like. Even with all those, I like her rehearsed way of speaking for some odd reason, she is a fantastic dancer and has that quality to just still keep (at least me) hooked to the screen. And yes she is very good when dubbed, maybe if she had been born in the silent movie era she would have achieved the same superstardom as she got in the 2000s because of it. Her acting kind of reminds me of that era of acting, slightly rehearsed and gesture-based. So that’s my stream of thought when it comes to her. Could be just superficiality and the fact that she is so aesthetically pleasing to the eyes and her songs just happen to be my favourites.

Sonam Kapoor – Not the very best, I must admit (my thoughts on ELKDTAL has a bit changed in terms of her acting since the film hit me so personally I couldn’t/didn’t want to see any flaws in it, that has changed with time), but she is just a good human being and I love her Instagram. Fashionista, producing films meant for movies and then turning a performance like Neerja which (for now) is her acting crowning achievement. Also, just the fact that she has the best family, which is a plus.

Jacqueline Fernandez – A fun person, love her youtube and just seems like a good person who knows her limits, but I still want her to maybe try to get out of the ‘love interest’ spot she is stuck with so far if she has the talents, if not, and she knows it, then I am fine. As long as she gets work.

Parineeti Chopra – Hopefully, gets a good hit film soon so she won’t be just the ‘flop cousin of Priyanka’. I just want good things for her even if I don’t see all her films. Also, the fact that I’d rather watch her over Priyanka any day, even though Priyanka begrudgingly has some good roles before she moved (7 Khoon Maaf is a good one). She also seems such a hard worker who has just had bad luck with movies but also has her limits in terms of acting.

    • Can’t stand Aish, but I respect your awareness that your liking is unrelated to talent.

Cosign on Sonam! Love her! And her talentlessness onscreen is yet to overcome her likability offscreen for me.

Yes Jaqueline!!!! She just seems like a fun nice person.

Pari I used to love, but she’s lost me a bit lately. We’ll see if her next movie brings me back.

      • I also find Aish a little irritating in most roles, but one thing that made me like her a bit more is how she publicly handled the negative publicity on her post-baby weight gain. She didn’t apologize and she didn’t make a huge big deal of it when she did lose the weight. That’s got to be challenge when your main selling point is that you’re the most beautiful woman in India.

        • I hadn’t thought about that, you are absolutely right. I usually don’t like Aish’s PR, but she did good there.

    • PARINEETI! I can’t believe I forgot about her! I’d definitely add her. I want the best for her so badly, and I have to agree, I like her better than PC most of the time.

      • I felt like that about 4 years ago, but now I’m over her. Although she might still be able to win me back, depending on how her next few films go!

  3. Do crushes count? Because if yes I will say Arjun Kapoor and Unni Mukundan (altrough I don’t think he is bad as people say. In my opinion nobody beats him when it comes to long, sexy glances)
I second Jacqueline Fernandez and Shraddha (but let’s not forget she tried roles that are beyond her – Haseena Parkar).

    • Blech, I had managed to forget Haseena Parker! Luckily it seems to have been a one time miss-step.

  5. Okay this might be dumb but can you do one with actors that are not perceived conventionally good looking but you find them sexy anyways.

    • That’s not dumb at all! I already had a discussion question in a Wednesday post that was similar, but I can come up with a new twist on it.
