What Friday Movie Should We Watch for Amitabh Love?

We don’t have to forget Katrina either! One of her best early performances was, coincidentally, in an Amitabh movie. No, not Boom.

Movies!

Boom

I made fun of it, but now I am intrigued. I’ve never seen the film myself but it is supposed to be legendarily bad. Only downside is that it has been sucked into the parallel universe of Zee5, so I’m not sure we can watch it.

Sarkar

A truly good good good movie. One of the all time career great performances for both Amitabh and Abhishek. And a very young and fresh Katrina was in there as well, giving a surprisingly great performance. Also, Tanisha Mukherjee! Being awesome too. Only downside is, no songs. Oh, and it’s on Prime/googleplay/youtube.

Bunty Aur Babli

Only downside to this movie, half my comments will be “I love it so much! So very very much!” Abhishek and Amitabh giving career best performances again, in a totally different genre and style from Sarkar. First time they co-starred too, and they are having a BLAST together. You want songs? This film has songs! You want romance? This film has romance! You want comedy about clueless white people so perfect it makes you cringe a little? This film has that too! You want one of the best First Night scenes in all of Hindi film? Yes, also that (they don’t know where the noses go when they kiss). Also on Prime/googleplay/youtube.

Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna

Definitely the third best Abhishek/Amitabh movie. Not terrible, but not B ‘n B or Sarkar level. On the other hand, Shahrukh! And equally important, Netflix instead of Prime!

  1. Zanzeer or KKKG?He sets the screen on fire with Jaya. And he was pretty handsome in Silsila,if you like it(it touches on adultery, but ever so slightly that the inclusion feels insubstantial).
I just hope everything turns out fine for everyone.I don’t know if prayers have power, but it is the first thing I do whenever I am stresses out.His innate goodness should not let anything wrong happen.

    • I love Zanjeer, I was tempted to add it to the list, but it seemed kind of off the beaten track for most people here. Let’s see if it gets more traction!

  2. Since our three week vacation starts on Saturday, I may get my wife to let me sleep in, which would free me for Friday evening. I know I love Bunty aur Babli, and it would be just a great summer feel good movie. But basically anything Amitabh would at the very least count as another notch in my education.

    • As you saw, I also love Bunty Aur Babli! And I really really hope you can join us.

  3. I can’t get a subtitled copy of Bunty aur Babli even though I desperately want to see it. I very much want to see Boom though and will watch the first Sarkar anytime. I don’t want to see KANK, though.

  4. Bunty aur Babli is something I haven’t yet seen and it looks so fun so it has my vote!

I checked and the Blu Ray/HD version of it HAS subtitles on einthusan (but you have to pay the one time 25 dollar to use it) and my primevideo has the movie with subtitles.

  5. Well, even though I would love to watch something Bunty aur Babli I think I am in the same situation as Popka Superstar. So, I’ll have to try and find a subtitled version….
It still has my vote though…I don’t really want to watch KANK. Though Boom also intrigues me.
I don’t supposed anyone wants to watch one of the older AB films…Abhimaan?

    • You were on last weeks watchalong, right? Rachel gave a desperate plea for something fun and song-filled this week. Which knocks out all of the Amitabh classics. Sarkar also, but I love Sarkar, so I couldn’t quite let go fo it.

  6. Well, Bunty aur Babli is the movie to show love to all the Bachchans battling COVID, so there’s that! Isn’t Sarkar too dark and gritty for a watchalong?

For Katrina, how about Mere Brother Ki Dulhan?

    • Good point. We could also watch Sarkar Raj, but that movie is goshawful and I refuse to watch it again.

I love Mere Brother Ki Dulhan! that was going to be my pick for this week before it turned into Amitabh Week. But now I kind of feel like we have to do an Amitabh movie.

  7. I haven’t been able to see Bunty Aur Babli with subtitles (the Amazon Prime subs go out of sync about a third of the way into the film and Einthusan doesn’t have subs) but if it’s available on YouTube with decent subs that would be my vote.

    • Let’s assume/hope it is on youtube with decent subs. I know the DVD has good subs, so that file exists somewhere. Also, it looks like it IS available with subs on einthusan, if you select the “UHD” version.

        • It’s for rent on youtube,

Also, Kirre pointed out it IS on einthusan with subtitles. You just have to select the “ultra HD” version, and then it’s perfect.

          • Yeah but then I have to give einthusan my credit card details which, no.

I can’t find it for rent here, either. I don’t know if that’s even a thing we can do on youtube. In the past I used to get those in the search results and I don’t now.

See this is the problem with this bloody movie. Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaah.

          • Give in to the darkside! Pay einthusan! We’ve all done it, and haven’t gotten scammed.

  8. I love movie!! I wish I could watch with you. Unfortunately, Friday afternoon never works for me. Bunty was one of the first movies I saw. Hum Tum was first which sent me to Bunty because of Rani which sent me to KKHH and Shah Rukh and it was all over…..love….

    • I’ll let you in on a secret, I’m getting foot surgery (assuming I pass my COVID screening) next week. Which means I may start rolling in additional watchalongs as I lay in bed with an elevated foot for two months. So maybe you can join one of them!
