Happy Saturday! I am back at my place for the weekend, this afternoon I get to go have a doggie play date with a friend (and their dog), and the rest of the time I am going to hang out at my place and eat and read my book in my big sunny living room.
Happy Saturday! Things to talk about!
So many movies coming up! There’s V with Nani, very exciting. Co-stars Sudheer Babu (bad guy from Baaghi), and Nivetha Thomas, and Aditya Rao Hydari. Most exciting, directed by Mohan Krishna who also did Ashta Chamma and Gentleman, and generally has a great creative partnership with Nani.
There’s The Big Bull which somehow I didn’t know about at all until it was just announced to be releasing on Disney+Hotstar. Ileana D’Cruz and Abhishek, woo! And Abhishek plays a financial crime wizard, which sounds perfect for him, smart and mind crimes and stuff.
And there’s some stuff starting or resuming filming! Arjun and Rakul Preet Singh’s untitled movie that I am very excited about because it is supposed to be a romance, and also Rakul Preet is one of the hardest working people in the industry and I am hoping her work ethic will rub off on Arjun Kapoor.
Prabhas’ new movie is announced, some epic thing in which he might be playing “Ram”. I have little faith in this film, just because Prabhas doesn’t seem good at keeping his filmmakers on track and on time.
I know there are other movies just announced, I can’t remember all of them. Feel free to bring more up in the comments and remind me of what I have missed!
And if there is any other fun news out there, bring it up too! Cute instagram posts, rumors of a new relationship or a breakup, anything like that.
Or of course, just talk about the movie you watched last night 🙂
Apparently even Sushant’s family is distancing themselves from Krazy Kangana, saying she’s, “On her own trip.” https://www.hindustantimes.com/bollywood/sushant-singh-rajput-s-family-lawyer-on-kangana-ranaut-she-is-on-her-own-trip-trying-to-settle-her-own-scores/story-zzbmovpBpL0bSR8JQYUbdN.html
And now his death makes more sense to me: https://www.tribuneindia.com/news/entertainment/rhea-chakrabortys-whatsapp-chat-with-mahesh-bhatt-on-day-she-left-sushant-singh-rajputs-house-revealed-youve-unclipped-my-wings-129284
Does she still get work? Who is willing to work with her, and do people go see her movies? She makes me wildly uncomfortable!

Kangana? Yeah, she makes me uncomfortable too! But, like many mentally unstable people, it seems like she is able to avoid behavioral issues so long as she is not triggered. Accounts from those who work with her say either “she was fine, pleasant, sensible, helpful, and then out of nowhere she accused me of conspiring against her” or “she was fine, pleasant, sensible, helpful”. Personally I would never risk working with her because of the good chance of the triggering making her unstable. But I can see how folks who take the risk could still end up with a fine experience. Panga, her most recent film, came out without any drama at all and seems to have had a smooth filming process to.

In more news – Priyanka Chopra has written her autobiography…to be released later this year! This might go either way…it could be a bland/cliched I’m a good hardworking girl who has achieved a lot (boring!)…or it could be a revealing story about how difficult it is to make it as a woman, overcome the double standards/sexism etc…and the fallout that women face for dating their costars (aka why did she alone face the blame for the SRK affair?)…though I’m going to bet that its just a PR move and SRK will be completely erased from the book…

And in other more wholesome news – Asha Bhosle has a new YouTube channel….she is hosting a talent hunt to find new voices through zoom..its pretty great…none of the usual reality competition drama…the people just sing from their homes and she gives supportive feedback to help them become better singers…plus she is also sharing little snippets/stories about her life and song recordings…its really sweet, wholesome, and nostalgic!
In this clip, she talks about how she sang Dum Maro Dum…the song was cut from the movie…but she went to Dev Anand and insisted that he keep the song. (P.S. it’s in Hindi so you might not understand all of it)

Based on PC’s standard playbook, her PR team will leak anonymous sources to drum up SRK affair attention again and get everyone to buy the book, and then the book will have nothing in it but a few quotes which could be interpreted to be about SRK. It’s been 10 years, and she is STILL trying to sell herself on his name without anything to back her up, blech.
The Asha thing sounds fabulous! Except based on my experience seeing her live a few years back, I am going to guess it will mostly be in Hindi. I approve of that in the abstract, Hindi should have it’s place and all, but I am sad selfishly because I want to know what he is saying!

So er, is Abishek the big bull and is this secretly a porn? Asking for a friend.
I’m rewatching Shashi’s Merchant Ivory movies. I love him so much. I saw a bunch of them in cinema last year and you never forget seeing his eyelashes on a big screen.

Abhishek is the Bull, but I do not know if it is secretly a porno. We should all watch and find out!
I have still only seen one, maybe two, Shashi-Merchant Ivory movies. I am bad.

I can’t not watch something in which Abishek plays a big bull.
If you haven’t seen Heat and Dust you’re missing out. Evil 1920s bisexual Shashi is really something. Bombay Talkie is really gay too though in a covert love triangle sort of way.

Bombay Talkie is the one I know I have seen. Didn’t notice the gayness so much as the “OMG Jennifer and Shashi are HOT together”ness.

So I’m gonna say something mildly controversial. I don’t think I like Arjun Kapoor as an actor. As a person he is the bee’s knees, but as an actor? I watched Finding Fanny and I kinda think he ruined the movie. Just fully unlikable, whiny, wimpy, & lame. And then I was trying to think of a movie I liked him in and I loved 2 states. But did I love it enough to make up for Finding Fanny? ANd they came out the same year!? He is just unreliable, and because of that, I’m not looking forward to his new movies.

I think you and Angie are increasingly set on a collision course! She didn’t like Bhangra Pe Le, you don’t like her main squeeze Arjun. However, your criticisms are valid. I think he’s just lazy. When he tries, he can be very charismatic and very good. But he just doesn’t try! It’s like life has exhausted him and he has no more energy left for acting. I still look forward to his new movies though, because I am an optimist and I always hope he will try this time.

I’m gonna be mean for a second to say that your statement is an accepted fact everywhere outside of DCIB! I love that this community is such a bubble!

He’s adequate as an actor, but I wouldn’t call him good. But it’s not really what I want from him, so it’s okay.

I love Arjun and watch his movies in my rose-coloured and in love glasses, but even in those glasses I see he is not trying anymore. I wish he would! And I wait for him to wake up and try.

Why do you think he gave up? Bored, disillusioned, burnt out, something else?

Looking at his filmography, Mubarakan was the first movie where I felt like he really wasn’t trying as much. And then Sridevi died and he really really stopped trying.
Maybe he just never really had the drive? He only started acting to get over his broken heart and with the push of Salman behind him. Maybe that was just enough to keep him going for the first 2-3 years and then he reverted to just not enjoying it?

Picking your brains a bit, what Indian movies use the following romance template- the man is a playboy, never catches feelings and the woman has a history of failed relationships because she always gives more than her partner. He becomes her relationship coach with tips on how to keep her man interested, they become friends in the process, then fall for each other. I feel this is a known trope but can’t think of any movies.

Brahmachari is the classic one, Mumtaz as the rejected fiancee who ends up living with cheerful Brahmachari Shammi Kapoor who gives her a make over. There’s also the Sanjay-Urmila Khoobsurat, where she is the shy glasses wearing daughter of the family and he is a conman on the run who ends up staying with them and giving her a make over. And Pardes, where fast talking SRK makes Mahima acceptably western before her fiance arrives.
It’s not exactly what you are describing, but the idea of the man making over the shy woman for another man and then falling for her himself is definitely around. Oh, and Sanam Teri Kasam! A DCIB favorite!

Yeah, I’ve seen all of them and they’re not what I had in mind. I normally don’t enjoy the way this idea plays out because of the regressive and power imbalance elements. I brought this up because what I described is the premise of a Turkish show I’m watching. I didn’t think I’d like it when I read the plot but I ended up enjoying it because they do things differently. There’s no makeover. She has no problem attracting suitors, she just needs to find one who’ll commit to marriage. He needs her to play his pretend girlfriend for his family in exchange for advising her, so they’re on equal footing. Lots of comedy, family chaos and intense chemistry!

It’s called Bay Yanlis (Transl: Mr. Wrong), currently 8 episodes in. The official websites don’t have subtitles, you have to watch it on other websites (with pesky ads) like https://turkish123.com/bay-yanlis/#
If you do watch, keep in mind that just like Hindi films, Turkish dramas have some tropes which need getting used to! I didn’t stick with all the dramas I started watching because things got too crazy, but the ones I did, I ended up loving.
