It’s Yashji’s birthday on Sunday! Obviously, we have to do something for him, and what better celebration than watching one of his films on Friday?

Silsila
The definitive movie on infidelity, enjoy booing and hissing Amitabh and Rekha and cheering on Jaya and Sanjeev!
Darr
The definitive movie on stalking! And general powerlessness of women who aren’t allowed to trust their cut and protect themselves. Plus, Shahrukh!
Chandni
Sridevi’s movie! She is amazing in this, so charming, you can’t help but love her. And the heroes can’t help but love her either.
Or, something else! But it has to be Yashji. And it can’t be Dil To Pagal Hai. Well, it can be, but I will fall asleep with my eyes open after 5 minutes of that mind-deadening slowness, so I won’t be there.

Producer too, but only when he is REALLY the producer, not the ones where Adi was actually in charge. That seems fair for the man’s birthday

Out of yours, I’d vote for Chandni.
Outside of your list, as a director, Trishul, because it has such a good cast of Amitabh, Shashi, Sanjeev Kumar, Hema, Rakhee; doesn’t have a sad ending; and doesn’t get too dark. Also a huge plus, the women have a lot of agency and are really awesome in it! It is also on Einthusan.
As a producer, Yeh Dillagi, because it is ridiculous and fun and the last movie according to your timeline, which I agree with, that Yash Chopra produced before Adi took over.
Although it’s Yashji so, I would say, as long as you don’t pick Silsila, I am in.

I also adore Trishul! But it’s not available anywhere (booooo!). Someday when Adi launches his own streaming channel, we can see it, but not until then.
Gosh darn it, Yeh Dillagi has different run times on Prime and youtube and googleplay. Only 7 minutes, which wouldn’t matter except that we are doing a watchalong so at some point half of us will get very off from the other half. Again, when Adi launches his own streaming channel, this will allllllllllllllll be better.
Chandni, on the other hand, 2 hours and 59 minutes on every service!!!! So that’s a possibility. And more people should watch it.

I thought I saw Trishul on Einthusan with subtitles. Are you trying to avoid Einthusan? I understand if you are but I thought we watched some movies on there.

I’m not, but I am trying to avoid movies that are only on einthusan unless people really REALLY want to watch them (veere di wedding). Also, this is unrelated to einthusan but I am going to take the opportunity to complain, the Trishul subtitles are TERRIBLE!!!!! Way worse than Deewar or Sholay or any of those others. Bugs me every time I watch my DVD and I keep waiting for a new version with better subs, but no luck.
However, if there is a groundswell of Trishul support, I will totally pick it! Even if everyone has to do einthusan! I do love it so. Despite the lousy subtitles.

Should it be a good movie, or just a commentable-onable one? Also, are there certain Yashji films I should definitely see? Is Fanaa worth my time? (Aamir’s ears always make me forget I’m supposed to be paying attention to the plot and I lose track of what’s happening. And there were FOUR EARS in Dhoom3!!! Twice as many ears and twice as distracting! I have NO idea what that plot was about.)

the beauty of Yash Chopra is that almost all his movies are both good and commentable. Exceptions on the “too good” side being Deewar, and “too bad” side being Parampara.
But I am going to stick to “only true Yashji films, so directed by him or produced pre-1995” as a rule. Fanaa wouldn’t qualify by that logic, since it was produced after he’d handed the company over. I haven’t seen it myself, but those who have, have liked it. It’s kind of silly, and a little tragic (if that bothers you), but charming.

I’ll watch any Yash Chopra directorial, from his most popular ones to the obscure ones. But I’ll probably be live watching my Turkish show till about 4-4:15 pm, so won’t be able to join from the beginning.

As I’m one of those who regularly can’t participate but read later with a lot of interest, I would like to read the thoughts about JabTakHaiJaan. There may be a bit of Aditya in it but it is so much of Yashji’s heart in it, too…and so much fondness for his main protagonist and the characters of Katrina and Anushka. Somehow, I got the feeling that Yashji wanted exactly this end of his filmmaker-journey….And he was the first one who made ShahRukh kiss on screen after his decision to not doing it any more after what he experienced after MayaMemsaab.

How about Waqt? The third movie directed by Yashji but probably one of his biggest hits. It is also packed with so many stars. If I had to vote for one of the movies in your post, I would vote for Darr.

I would love to do Waqt! But I just checked, and it has the same problem as a lot of these older movies, there are different versions floating around. It’s 2 hours and 58 minutes on youtube, and 2 hours and 12 minutes on prime. I don’t want to limit folks to just one streaming source they may not be able to access, but it would be a disaster of a watchalong if we are all on different versions.

Oh, that’s a bummer. If you are interested, maybe you can do a regular movie review instead of a watchalong. It is definitely one of the classics that gets referenced in so many long lost brothers kind of movies that came later.
For a watchalong, you could also do Lamhe.
