Saturday WatchAlong 7:30am: Dear Zindagi! Sexy SRK and Mental Health!!!!

Good morning! I have walked the dog, made coffee, and I am all ready to be soothed by beautiful Goa and beautiful SRK.

Yaaaaaay, Shahrukh movie!!!! He’s wise and kind and encouraging, and the rest of the movie is nice too.

At 7:30am, I will put up a comment “And PLAY!” and you hit play and then we all comment along together.

  8. I love that he starts by saying “you don’t have to forgive them”. Forgiveness is a really hard barrier to ask people to cross, it’s much easier to just say “feel what you feel, but for your happiness you have to find a way forward”.

  9. Jug’s reaction here of calm acceptance and then congratulations is so good. It’s so important to know that you can cry, scream, lose control and the world doesn’t end. It’s a gift to have someone who can help you feel safe to lose control and can also help you move past it.

    • Especially that she responds to “I’m sorry” with a hug, and not “It’s okay”. She doesn’t have to give her Mom that, it’s something to work towards, this is just the beginning.

  19. I actually lived with my grandma for a couple of years around the same age. Nothing tragic about it, dad was working, mom was studying, even grandpa was working, all in different cities. I remember the excitement when they came to meet, and sadness when they had to leave!

    • Yeah, I think the key is that her parents kept lying to her. She was happy living with her grandparents when she thought she understood what was happening. It was learning that her parents were lying and it wasn’t what she thought that bothered her.

  20. Oh Shahrukh! This is your preprepared speech leading towards “and this special relationship is therapist and patient and nothing more”. He must have to give this speech so much.

  21. One of the things I like is that SRK is the teacher when he own life is arguably a mess. He is divorced, doesn’t get to see his kids. Works a job that is not universally respected…

    • Yes! It’s a subtle little indication of therapy as a profession. Like, you wouldn’t expect a medical doctor to never get sick, you would just expect him to be very good at helping other people be well.

    • And it’s telling what we hav ebeen shown for the rest of the film. Alia needs Fatty and Jackie and her parents and everyone else in her life to feel happy. She doesn’t need that one special perfect person.

  24. First time I saw this in theaters, at this point the friend I was watching with had to cover her ears and put her head between her knees and whisper “no no no no no”. It’s TOO SCARY AND HORRIBLE TO WATCH!!!!

  27. Oh right, my eye drop theory! I think it is a thing he does sometimes to give a little bit of extra therapuetic time for his patients. Maybe the director or someone knew a therapist that did that and suggested it as a character trait?

    • I just commented above!!!! My newish theory is that maybe it is something someone involved saw a real life therapist do and suggested it to SRK.

      It works great as a thing to do to give the patient extra time without seeming to give them extra time.

      • I like this idea, which is better than my idea, which was, “I guess Shah Rukh was having eye trouble and they incorporated it into the movie.” Remember, in Raees he uses eye drops in the doctor’s office too.

        But yeah, this would be a nice tactic to break eye contact and give the patient (and oneself) a moment.

  31. GENEVIEVE!!!! This is it!!! This is the moment that feels like maybe Shahrukh liked her as more than a therapist! Nto necessarily in love, but felt something more than just patient-doctor.

  34. This short film is so incredibly bad. Like, I keep trying to come up with some reasonable plot reason it is supposed to be so incredibly bad. They must have know, right?

  40. I like that ARK doesn’t have to be her perfect happy ending, we don’t see them get married or anything, but it is dipping her toes back intot he romantic pool and moving on from her issues in a healthy way.

    • Just this and English/Vinglish. She was Alia in real life, she worked on ad films and stuff as a young talented woman for ages before finally getting a chance at making a real movie (English/Vinglish).
