My Christmas Decorating is Done!!!!

I did it! Took the whole long Thanksgiving weekend with lots of breaks, but I got all my decorations up. Now, time to move on to making presents.

You ready for beautiful gorgeousness?

First, I picked up my tiny live tree in a pot. I tried to put lights on them, but it is so tiny, the lights just fell off.

So, new theory, I hung lights on the wall behind it. And that gave me space to put nativity scenes around it. It’s lovely!

Just a few more touches to finish it off, my car of course:

And then when I went over to my parents, I brought my oldest fake tree (first one a bought, it has Mickey and Minnie on the base!) for my bedroom.

My parents aren’t as big on decorations as I am, so for the living room I brought over a nice simple small decoration, a light up Christmas shark.

And that’s it! Decorating done! Much less this year than previous years, partly because I’m home all the time. 5 trees and lights in every window is nice for a few hours after work, but is a bit much when you live with it 24 hours.

Oh right, one more thing, Genevieve sent a photo of her creche which is such perfection I wish we could all emulate it:

  2. Muslim SRK overlooking a Christian nativity. I love it! Where else but at DCIB?

    Debating decorating this year due to a devastating Corona loss in May. Plus I’m in a “red zone”, rarely go out, nobody coming in. It’s just me and the dog. But then again, who better than us to enjoy the twinkle lights on my own tiny tree? Wish I had a Christmas shark.

    • Exactly! We need decorating now more than ever!!!! Especially when you are just looking at your same 4 walls all day every day.

      Really we are all regressing to the life that brought the Christmas traditions about to begin with. Before urbanization, in temperate climates you went from being outside and visiting people and seeing different things in the summer, to spending most of your time inside in the warmth all winter. You need to decorate the house if you are gonna be in there all the time. And you need lights and changes and all kinds of things to make up for not being able to go outside.

        • Oh! I had such a nice surprise this year! I remembered that last year a lot of my decorations were broken. So I was all set to sort through and throw things out. What I forgot was that I already sorted and threw things out last January, and also bought a bunch of new stuff! So once I got my decorations out, I found all this nice new stuff and no depressing old stuff.

    ShahRukh is the closest I have to religious fervour so makes total sense.

  5. I’m so tickled that my family creche made it onto DCIB! For a bit we were going to cut down a second small tree because we had SO MANY ORNAMENTS (the kids make them, every year). But it didn’t happen, and as we unpacked I was glad because I had forgotten that last year, when I put things away, I threw out at least a third of the ornaments! So this year there is only one bizarre pipe cleaner creation on the tree instead of 10! We still do have about 10 corn husk dolls hanging from the tree though, but I like them better than the pipe cleaners. We need some glowing santa sharks though!

    • Our family had this whole collection of “snowflakes” which were just construction paper with bits cut out and big globs of Elmer’s glue and glitter. Enormous ugly things, but the kids made them, so we had to keep them. I think at some point my parents cut things way down and we only kept kid ornaments with school photos on them (the best kind).

      We did keep all 3 of our Nativity scenes though. They are just SO MUCH FUN!!! It’s like action figures, but with Jesus. My sister and I arranged them differently every year, mixing and matching figures from all three however we liked. Is your creche moveable? Can the kids put stuff where ever they want? Or is it all glued down?

      • Our creche is a fancy toy. Actually it was my father’s as a boy. Totally moveable, at one point it had four kings and two marys, but in giving it to my family it got whittled down, except there weren’t angels. So last year I e-bayed some angels. They are small, but angels don’t need to be huge.

        • We always had fun with the Angel, because she is supposed to be “on high”. So we’d stand on a chair and put her up on top of the bookshelf or something.

  8. Ok, I’m now fantasizing about a crèche of film stars. I’m seeing Sanjay Dutt as Joseph, but maybe too old. Anupam, Amitabh Bachchan, and Naseeruddin are the wise men and Manoj is a shepherd. Maybe Shraddha for Mary? And the angel is Hrithik with wings and a strategically draped cloth.

      Could you do 8 menorahs this year? Like, on the first night you light one whole one, on the next night you light two, and so on?

        • In my neighborhood, most people put them in the front window. I see them when I walk the dog, and you can tell there is the “nice” one and then all the “kid” ones surrounding it.

          • One is supposed to put it in the window, to “publicise the miracle”. Maybe that’s why Jewish film makers and composers love Christmas movies and songs; a way to publicise a miracle. A different one, but one nevertheless. My kids used to stand at our window, only on the second floor of the apartment building and call down to passers by, “look up, look up” ( through the window so they werent actually heard) and would cheer wildly when someone did. Ah, to have those days back……
