Chatty Check In Post: What Did Y’All Have For Lunch?

I feel like we just don’t TALK any more! Also, I am missing my casual office conversations from work. What did you have for lunch?

I’ll start!

I’m at my parents’ today and they have cooked squash, pork roast, and homemade chili. I skipped all of that, and instead I went for a turkey sandwich. My thinking is, you can eat good food all year, but you can only eat leftover turkey sandwiches in the weeks following Thanksgiving. It’s seasonal!

My turkey sandwich recipe: toasted whole grain bread, mayo, salt, and turkey. That’s it! Nothing else required!

Oh, and I had a full caffeine coke to drink because I am sleepy and I have a movie group Zoom call scheduled tonight so I have to be more awake. We are discussing Monsoon Wedding, I’m excited!

How about you?

  1. I had homemade pizza. It sounds like a lot of work but isn’t. I usually make the dough in the weekend and then pull it out whenever I’m in the mood. Just take it out of the fridge, roll it out and put some toppings on it. It’s like a mid-week treat when everything else is so depressing.

    • Ooo, that does sound nice! I used to make homemade pizza all the time when I had friends over, and then I stopped. But I’ve got the time and pasta sauce this weekend, I could try again.

      • Oh! I have never made homemade pizza from scratch, but I love making personal pizza from frozen garlic naan. I great with kids too! They love putting the sauce and toppings on it.

  2. For lunch? I like to live on the edge. I had a bowl of Cheerios (dry) with a side glass of ice cold milk. I followed that with a nice handful of peanut M&Ms. (I also had Cheerios for breakfast. I just really like Cheerios.)
I love Monsoon Wedding. Naseeruddin Shah is the perfect anxious but endearing father. Rajat Kapoor is brilliantly loathsome. And Vijay Raaz is….Vijay Raaz. (I’ve read that the scene in which he is trying to get phone reception by climbing all over the tent structure was completely improvised.)

    • At my parents house, the meals tend to go on a slow slide through out the day. My Dad makes a big filling super healthy breakfast for everyone. Then lunch is scavenging, and dinner tends to be cereal. It’s all upside down!

What kind of milk? My theory is that whole milk is so full of vitamins and stuff that it turns what you are eating into a real meal. And peanut M&Ms are basically health food.

  3. My anxiety has been affecting my ability to eat, but I think it’s getting better. Lunch was pasta salad that my mom gave me and Cheez Doodles. The pasta salad had green and red peppers, black olives, cherry tomatoes, and cucumbers along with Italian dressing. Not a fan of half the veggies but at least I ate it.

    • The salad sounds beautifully colorful and the Cheez Doodles sound delicious. Being a health nut, I’d probably skip the salad and go straight to the Doodles.

    • Ooo, that salad sounds good! My Mom made a couple salads like that over the summer when we were drowning in fresh summer veggies. But now it is all squash and stuff, I miss light pasta salads.

  4. Mad Thai green curry and ate it with quinoa. It is easy to make – chopping veggies is the only chore. Store bought paste and canned coconut milk. I Recently found out that coconut cream is better than coconut milk for making Thai curries. The fat content is more in the cream and the gravy comes out tasting better.

    • Ooo, that sounds good! I have never managed to make good curry at home. They have all these easy jars and stuff at the grocery store and I think I will do it really easily, and then I just don’t.

  5. These comments are such fun!

I’m in a red zone and don’t go out except to walk the dog, so Amazon Fresh delivers my groceries every other Monday. I’m 3 days from the next delivery and the cupboard is kinda bare. Bread and butter for breakfast,
I don’t eat lunch, bread and butter and cheese for dinner, and 2 apples . There’s also a bowl of leftover Halloween candy on the counter that will start calling my name around 8 o’clock.

    • I am so glad I live in a city! On the one hand, we have been living in a “red zone” (IL has different definitions, but it’s the same concept) since March. But on the other hand, I can get groceries delivered within an hour straight to my door any time I’m hungry. Thank goodness you have Halloween candy, that will give you loads of nutrition. And joy!

  6. Warmed up tortellini from yesterday, and an orange, stuffed into my face during a short break in an all day session. Oh, and chocolate. Chocolate is obligatory. My chocolate consumption is double since the winter darkness arrived.

    • Chocolate is absolutely necessary. My parents have a super dark chocolate bar going in their fridge at all times. But about a week ago I added a super dark chocolate bar to my grocery list because I NEED it on a day by day basis, not just when I am at my parents. Also, I started paying extra for a chocolate shot in my coffee.

And now I am really REALLy wanting oranges too. Definitely need to add it to my next grocery order!

  7. Yesterday I had a nice lunch: roasted vegetables (aubergine, zucchini, onion, peppers, artichoke) with meat and french fries.
Today I think I will make a simple dal with rice.
I’m also proud of myself these days because I made polish national dish – bigos (with home made sauerkraut) and it came delicious. It’s the only polish dish I manage to make just like my mom. All other polish recipes taste like poorer versions of my mom’s food, except this one.

    • I am so impressed!!!! That is more cooking than I have done since I don’t know when. I tend to have one homemade option in my fridge that I make in bulk on the weekend and then just eat the same thing for a week.

I just looked up the recipe for bigos, and it’s what my Dad makes us every morning! Sort of. He likes sauerkraut and it has good vitamins and stuff, so he throws that in, along with whatever left over meat and veggies we have all chopped up.

      • I don’t have choice, I have those 2 mouths to feed everyday and must cook. They can eat pasta 365 days in a year but I can’t so I try to make something different everyday. And when I don’t have ideas or I’m tired – pasta con salsa .

        • You should talk to my parents! They have really fallen down on the job of feeding me. When I was in bed with my foot, I got nutritious varied home made dinners every night. Now that I can walk around and stuff, they expect me to find and make my own food. Terrible parents! You still feed your son!

        • My mom and dad are amazing cooks and between the two of then, we had something different every day for dinner. So now, I am spoiled and have to do the same for myself.

  8. It’s Friday, so I treated myself to one of my guiltiest pleasures: a chili, cheese hot dog, with onions, mustard, and Sriracha. I have not had one in such a long time. It was DELICIOUS! This one was delivered from a restaurant, but before the pandemic, I had my favorite street food vendor make one for me once every few months when I needed a pick me up. Now, I am trying very hard not to fall asleep!
