Happy post! Mostly because I have a really cute photo of both Albie Dog and Nephew, so I thought I should share.
Albie Dog! The sofa is now my office, which causes issues, because to his mind it is really HIS sofa. I needed extra space to set down my computer and stuff so I moved his blanket to the floor and tried to explain to him that he should go to the blanket, and I will get the sofa. And this is the face he gave me.
So we compromised, he got 2/3rds of the sofa, and I got all the rest.
Meanwhile, nephew update! He continues to be a fairly standard issue toddler. Loves sticks, loves dropping things on the floor and laughing (my sister calls it “researching gravity”), loves running very busily in circles to make sure his little legs still work. Also, now he has a yard! So he is in love with Sticks, as are almost all small children (and dogs). This is the photo I love, his great ambition to reach for and conquer The Largest Stick He Has Ever Seen.
And that’s all I got! Two little bits of happiness for you today!!!!

These pictures are so cute! Oh, also, a friend recently rescued a dog that looks so similar to Albie Dog, including the ears! Do you know what kind of dog he is? Hers is some mixture of Australian Catahoula Leopard, Australian Cattle Dog, and maybe German Shepherd. I was just shocked at how similar the two dogs look. I will send you pictures.

Albie Dog is a Shelter Dog (the best breed). I’ve run into a few other dogs that look a lot like him. Maybe there’s some kind of dominant genetic traits that pop up in a lot of mixtures?
All I know about Albie is that he arrived in Chicago from a Kentucky kill shelter with papers that said he was a Chihuahua (not true), he was well over a year old (not true), and his name was “Bubba” (very much not true).

Hers is a Shelter Dog too! I just sent you pictures so you can see how similar he looks to Albie. Same ears, same size, just with lighter fur on his body.

One thing someone at a dog park told me is that pit mixes always end up small. So if this dog and Albie Dog are both pit mixed with Big Ears mixed with 3rd Unknown, then that could explain it! Because they are both small with weird ears, but they have different bodies to me. Also, for such Big Ears, Albie is really not good at hearing commands.

My brother and sis-in-law too got a pup from a Kentucky shelter. The shelter said the pup was a border collie mix and would be 25lbs once she is an adult. She is 50 lbs now at 2 years!!

I love the phrase researching gravity. When the 12-year-old was a toddler he would do the same thing, by THROWING himself on the ground, laughing, and doing it again, and again. My children have a fairly high pain tolerance. It was before the time of ubiquitous fancy phones, I’m kinda sad I have no videos of it. And sticks, I remember not letting my oldest play with sticks because I was scared he would poke his eye out, and by the third child sticks were a standard toy from infancy. At the forest preschool we had one stick rule, it couldn’t be taller than you, it helped the kids get a sense of distance and how far away they needed to be from other people to swing it.

My sister and brother-in-law are very nervous first time parents, now that I think about it, it is kind of stunning that they are so casual about Stick Play. Maybe because the baby is never outside without two adults hovering around him?
Yesterday he broke the “not taller than you” stick rule, and that was a mistake. Mostly because he kept falling over and tripping over his own stick. I guess it was a mistake for him, but not for us, since we got a hilarious video out of it.

Pandemic isolation has broken us, that’s why we are casual. Also see: letting him rub the pacifier on the asphalt and then stick it back in his mouth, play on the stairs, watch SRK videos, etc.

I’m sure all the parenting books now say eating asphalt is good for the gut. The different approach to peanuts within the six years between oldest and youngest was extreme, extreme enough that now six years later I can see asphalt being recommended.

I’m just waiting for new studies to show that watching TV until you eyeballs fall out is good for small children. It’s all I wanted to do! And my mean mother never let me!!!
