Happy Saturday! I’m putting up this post, I’m doing the watchalong, and then I am shutting the computer and signing off. Fun plan for the day, I just ordered more puzzles for curbside pick up from a locally owned toy store. So I get to drive down there and have an adventure!!!!

Are you as tired of the Varun Dhawan wedding rumors as I am? Just, let them get married! And then tell us about it once it happens! Why do we need a million conflicting rumors every day?
Priyanka made another movie with Rajkummar. Is anyone here willing to fall on their sword and watch it for us? Because I’m not gonna do it.

Nope. Not sick of Varun-Natasha wedding rumors at all! I hope the festivities are starting today and they are getting married tomorrow. Oh and I want to see pictures as it happens!!! I’m a sucker for weddings and so very excited about this.
I would have had no problem watching a movie with Priyanka and Rajkumar if it was light and fun but this is not that. The movie the White Tiger is based on Aravind Adiga’s book and it is too dark and depressing for me to watch. Instead for people with kids and for adults who like super hero movies (like me) I would recommend We Can Be Heros.

I am so sick of the rumors! I like weddings, but I hate unsubstantiated rumors.
And if you aren’t going to take the White Tiger bullet, I will have to hunt around and find someone else here who will. Is there anything gay? If there is, we can sucker in Popka.

Good, because the only reason I would watch 83 is ridiculous period wigs, and even that can’t get me through 53 hours or however long it is.

I’m trying to decide whether the dark is worth it for my Priyanka/Rajkummar shipping, still undecided. I mean, if they look really good probably I’ll do it. I need to look at the plot.

Plan to watch White Tiger. National Public Radio gave it a good review. Rajkumar can really impress when he’s serious about a role and Priyanka has learned her craft after a gazillion movies despite having no talent. I’ll let you know what I think and I’m interseted in other DCIB reviews.

Sorry I couldn’t make it to the watchalong today. I watched The White Tiger with my Dad and that was the only time here when we could watch it.
I thought it was good. Dark, yes, but also very interesting in showing the complexities involved in the story. Priyanka actually was surprisingly good, but I like her acting in movies, just not in real life. Adarsh was VERY GOOD and I want him to get all the awards. Rajkummar was a bit shaky on the American accent, but otherwise, he was his usual good self. There was a bit of homoeroticism at some point between him and Adarsh. Yea, I would compare it to Parasite quite easily; different countries, but the same message.

I didn’t see any shade of gayness in the relation between Ashok and Balram. And yes: There are lots of similarities between “The White Tiger” and “Parasite”. Though the latter was yet darker.

Yea it was a bit last minute, but I’m glad I watched it since it is so rare for any member of my family to ask to watch an Indian movie in the first place.

Happy weekend. I’m here to say I think you should watch Sir. I finished it last night after seeing Genevieve’s comments and there’s so much to talk about. Good discussion movie, and not too dark or too long.
I’m planning on watching the White Tiger. My husband and I both loved the book, this is one of those occasions when I can rope him into watching an Indian movie with me during our regular viewing hours. Maybe even tonight.
Also, had to share this adorable video of the Rock and his daughter. He is so large and so gentle, she is so tiny and so decided!

A friend has asked me for Indian film recommendations. As I usually, do I asked her to name her favorite movies. She listed Cinema Paradiso, The Notebook, Casablanca, It’s a Wonderful Life, Grapes of Wrath, Brooklyn, Call Me By Your Name. Says she likes emotion and drama. Tends not to like comedy. HELP!

Watched The White Tiger! I don’t have much to add to what Kirre and Salesman said. Priyanka was good, Rajkummar was good. His part is much bigger, he’s basically second lead – which is the cool thing, because usually it would be the other way around, but this story is told from the servant’s point of view. He’s a spoiled rich boy, a wannabe artist who comes back to India to reluctantly take his place in his father’s grubby empire of wealth and corruption. It’s a type we see all the time (the male lead of Sir is another example just this month) but in this film we’re not expected to empathize with him because we see how everything he has is built on plundering the human potential of people like Adarsh. (And yes, Adarsh is great.)
I realized as I was watching that I didn’t remember the book all that well, not the details. The structure of the story is the same, that’s the part I remember because it’s fun and super effective at hooking your interest. The story itself is Adarsh’s gradual awakening, “breaking out of the rooster cage” as he puts it, from a system that taught him to believe his life was set by the circumstances of his birth. In that sense it’s not a dark story, and certainly not as dark as Parasite, though terrible and violent things happen along the way.
