Yaaaaaay, Saturday!!! I get to watch a movie with y’all, and then maybe spend the day doing a puzzle, or reading a book. Not a book to Learn Things and Be Productive, but just for fun. Isn’t that a crazy idea?
Things to talk about!
I am just cranking through big picture topics related to non-Indian pop culture, give me more! I’ll do it even if just me and one other person are interested. What’s your favorite pop culture non-Indian thing? I can probably write about it and I just want to make people happy 🙂
PREITY’S BIRTHDAY!!!!!!! SO EXCITING!!!! It’s tomorrow, and I am celebrating by thinking how happy Preity makes me in general. So smiley onscreen, so confident in real life, so well-married, such a hilarious married name.
After I finish my current “Van Gogh’s Bedroom at Arles” puzzle, should I do this one:
Or this one:
Umm yeah I would love a post on how Amy is the only decent person in the family! I think Greta Gerwig’s adaptation has already done a lot to rehab Amy, but seeing as how she and Meg were always my favorites I could certainly use another reason to appreciate her.

Amy really is the best! Also, did you see my Betsy Tacy post?

Namaste Wahala, is coming to Netflix soon. I was excited when I saw the poster, but I just saw the trailer and I think I won’t watch it.

Well I want someone to watch it! Because the premise is so fascinating.

I’m loving how Netflix is tapping into stories about the Indian diaspora in Africa. And giving more visibility to productions coming out of South Africa and now Nigeria. I feel like they’ve figured out that rom coms and weddings are a good way in to get their audience to try out an unfamiliar industry. And crime. Genres with built in plot structures and clear expectations.

Nigeria’s “Nollywood” is supposed to be one of the largest and most popular industries in Africa. In the 80s, when VHS arrived, Hindi film absolutely dominated Nigeria for years, and then they started making their own similar versions (classic relationship based plots, songs). So I find it really interesting that now there is a movie consciously nodding to that connection.

Master just came out on Amazon. Vijay, not a fan, and Vijay Sethupathi, big fan. Debating whether to watch it or finish binging Lupin.

I’m having that problem. Someone needs to try it and say if it’s worth it.

I saw it yesterday! And to my surprise I liked it (and I’m not a big masala fan & the last Vijay’s film I saw was in 2007). The plot has small holes here and there but overall is engaging. The music is very catchy and with a loooot of drums (the thing I liked the most in this film). both Vijays are good and there is a cool scene with arrow arch. Also I found a new crush – Arjun Das.
Minuses: Malavika Mohanan is useless and not a good actress and the central story is kinda dark. (but we can say it about 90% of tamil films I guess)

Thanks! I might give it a go then. How dark? I don’t want real world problems, only stupid masala problems.

Little spoiler: The villain uses kids from juvenile detention center to cover his crimes, drugs them and kills them if they don’t want to collaborate.

Oh, I can handle that. Thanks!

Thanks for the comments. I liked the film and agree with everything you said, especially about Malavika. The male stars were so good that a more powerful, accomplished female actress was needed.

Have you seen Great Indian Kitchen yet?? I really loved it and I think you will too….even if you don’t want to do a whole review…can we have a space for discussion? So much to talk about with that movie…

Great Indian Kitchen absolutely seems to be a discussion-worth movie.
But: How accessible is Neestream?
And (considering the latest trends here): Is DCIB the right platform to discuss this kind of films?

Neestream is available in the U.S. and you can pay to watch the movie for $2 with English subtitles – That’s how I watched it.
The movie deals with patriarchy….so it’s not a “fun” watch or “happy” discussion…. it’s just really well done and I think many people on this blog will enjoy watching it and talking about it…but I guess Margeret can make that call…

Shreyans, you know I love you, but I think I have to wait and see if anyone else is interested!!!! We love talking Patriarchy here, you know that, but we also love just TALKING which means we need more than one person to have the conversation. I’ll put up a discussion post of some kind of more folks are interested.
