I am soooooooooooooo grumpy today. Cheer me up by reminding me about happy things of the past!!! Favorite rom-coms of the decade when I was a little kid.
My favorite 90s rom-com, Indian version:
DDLJ. Of course. It’s the Indian film I really fell in love with, plus it is 90s in so many great ways. Bright colored clothing, big hair on ladies, 90s Indian film style natural eyebrows and minimal make-up, and Switzerland location shooting. So great!!!!
My favorite 90s rom-com, American version:
Sleepless in Seattle! It’s clever, it’s cute, it’s got kids, it’s romantic, and Tom Hanks!!!!
My favorite 90s rom-com, Hong Kong Edition:
Needing You. Technically release in 2000, but I’m gonna allow it. It’s very much a romance of opposites, the hero is super hot, and it builds to an epic romantic gesture.
My favorite 90s rom-com, British Edition:
Four Weddings and a Funeral. Forget Andie McDowell and Hugh Grant, it’s all about the other friends!!!! So many cute unexpected romances in this.
My favorite 90s rom-com, TV Edition:
Friends Chandler and Monica!!!! Started in 1999, so that’s the 90s. Two characters we already knew really well and cared about, falling in love without changing their basic personalities, and surprising themselves and the audience with how well they worked together.
My favorite rom-com I watched in the 90s:
His Girl Friday. My sister and I watched that movie so many times we’ve practically got it memorized.

Favourite 90s rom-com, TV Edition: Frasier – Niles and Daphne are at the same level as Monica and Chandler (who really are the ideal couple) for me.
Favourite rom-com I watched in the 90s: Probably none since I was so young and wouldn’t remember a thing.

Oooo, 10 Things I Hate About You is SO GOOD! The only flaw is that there’s not enough of it. Like, I wanted more on the sister relationship and stuff, what little we had was so good.
Notting Hill always just feels like “4 Weddings But Not As Good” to me.
Absolutely Daphne-Niles!!!! Similarly getting to see them as individuals for a long time, then the slow build to coming together, and then finally just happy funny couple stuff.
Don’t tell me that, you make me feel old!!!

Hmm. I think the ones I have seen but not reviewed are ones I saw so long ago that I can’t really review them. Like, Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander, I remember that Aamir isn’t good enough for the heroine, that his older brothers plot is weirdly shortened, and that it is like Breaking Away but different, but I don’t know if I can review it based on that.
However, from your list, I think we can say that the 90s are very much Your Decade in terms of film!!!! Maybe not your only decade, but certainly one you respond to more than perhaps other people. So much cheese! So much foofy hair! So much ridiculous unbelievable slightly misogynistic plotting!!!

The plot lines can be ridiculously misogyny, which is also where I struggle with 90s movies. I am particularly thinking of most David Dhawan ones, which I mostly can’t watch (don’t even get me started on Biwi #1). And yet, at the same time, I can forgive misogyny a little bit more in the 90s than in today’s movies. Or maybe it’s just I can tolerate it more with some people more than others. For example I unapologetically love late 80s and 90s Aamir, Juhi, and Madhuri and 50% of Salman. To me Salman peaked in the late 90s and early 2000s. So I am much more willing to tolerate their nonsense than others.

Oh and in Jo Jeeta, Aamir doesn’t start off by being good enough for the heroine but changes and becomes good enough (e.g., he is no worse than ShahRukh in Chennai Express or Happy New Year). And Aamir’s brother is soo swoon worthy in Jo Jeeta and IMO is the second lead. I love his character in the movie.

I have almost similar sentiments towards 90s movies and star images! When asked about favorites, I automatically go back to that decade. Hum Hain Rahi, KKHH, DDLJ, DTPH, Dil, AAA, so many! I know there are problematic elements in many of them, but I can look past them. I still cringe when I think how I used to find THAT scene in Dil so romantic! Aamir and Salman were at their peak gorgeousness in this decade IMHO, perhaps because I was looking at them through pre-teen eyes (I’m not saying Shahrukh because he is gorgeous in every decade!).

Yes! I recognize the problematic elements too and yet, maybe because I am looking it it nostalgically, I am able to forgive it more. For example, this is not 90s but the example that pops into my head is Mujhse Dosti Karoge, which is HUGELY misogynistic (seriously Hrithik is basically ShahRukh in Darr in the second half of MDK) and yet, I love that movie. But other more recent movies that have the same elements (e.g., Sanju, Arjun Reddy, Mission Mangal), I cannot stand!

This is going to be useless to you, but oh well. Difficult question, because “Western” movies from the 90s I like are all weird cult comedies, never romances. That was the great thing about the 90s. I mean, I guess But I’m a Cheerleader?
Indian, I really like Awaargi which is about the heroine’s right to choose even though she is a fallen woman, and Dulhe Raja in which they fake date solely for the purpose of annoying her father. But with most Govinda movies the romance isn’t really the point.
My wish for 2021 is one (1) Indian movie in which a woman openly disobeys her family and ends happily but the censors don’t want to grant it to me, I think.

Actually, Maha Sangram is a nice romance. Like the tragic romance between Govinda and Shaheen is actually touching, and then there’s the one between Vinod Khanna and Govinda, and whatever Madhuri is doing (tragically not realising how gay Vinod Khanna is, mostly).

Indian: Prem Aggan (it’s so ridiculously silly and happy). Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and Koyla. Also Chakoram, malayalam movie I saw 2 weeks ago about bold spinster who falls in love with her new neighbor

Awwwww, The Wedding Singer and While You Were Sleeping are so nice!!! And both remade with Salman into movies that are somewhat enjoyable.

Fav 90s American romcom: I watched most of them in the 2010s. 10 things, Clueless, While You Were Sleeping, You’ve Got Mail (I watched this with Sleepless in Seattle almost at the same time, YGM is the one that’s stayed with me), Just Like Heaven, Before Sunrise and Sunset (dunno if they’re romcoms!).
British: I remember enjoying 4 Weddings but nothing other than that. Maybe Bridget Jones (is it British?), Love Actually.

Oh! It’s so good! What I really remember is how, along with George and Michelle falling in love, you see George come to really understood parenthood and kind of fall in love with his daughter.

Everybody mentions 10 things I hate about you, so I decided to watch it and it’s great. I don’t know why I haven’t watched it earlier, but maybe it’s good because watching it now felt like using a time machine. The music, the clothes, the haircuts and the high school problems – I felt 16 years old again 😜
