Happy Saturday!!!! My aunt is in town to see Grandpa, and she invited me to have lunch with them, so yaaaaaay!!!! Family gathering!!!! For the first time in A YEAR!!!!
Things to talk about!
I got the inspection report on the building we are buying, and it needs a new roof, like, yesterday. Which is EXCITING! I get to pick out my first roof! I’m thinking, Purple? Ooo! Or RAINBOW!!!
Ajeeb Dastaans trailer! Everyone we like in one movie!!! Plus, LESBIANS!!!
Ajay Devgan’s birthday was yesterday! Important question, sexy or not? Or, sexy sometimes and not others?
I am a sexy sometimes and not others person. When he plays restrained and solid and confident he is DEAD SEXY. When he plays whacky, or cocky, or with stupid hair, he is not sexy.
For example, sexy:
Not Sexy
Have somebody seen Pagglait? Is it interesting?

I enjoyed it! Interesting story, good music by Arijit, and Sanya is great…actually, the whole cast is good…worth a watch!

Thank you! I will watch it then 🙂

Yes, thank you! I was wondering too.

I watched it. It reminded me of Thappad, in a way because one incident causes Sanya to wake up and finally see the world around her and ultimately take the action that’s best for her. To me, it was commentary of women living life that was planned for them and never being allowed to make your own decisions, hypocrisy of family members saying “they want what’s best for you,” and people claiming to be progressive while continuing with regressive traditions.
Sanya and Sayani Gupta are both amazing in it. However, fair warning, there is not much plot per se. And the pace is slow. I enjoyed it but I was in the mood for it.

Here comes a belated confirmation: “Pagglait” is a throughout watchable movie! Perhaps not a “must watch”, but …did we see any “must-watch”-hindi-movies so far in 2021? Exiting news: Netflix will release Chaitanya Tamhane’s “The Disciple” later this month!

I just posted a longish comment on it but realized it would go to Emily. So wanted to add one here too. I found it interesting (see reasons below) but fair warning, there is not much plot per se so you might be bored unless you are really paying attention to the dialogue and there is no romance.

Got it, thanks! Being in the right mood makes all the difference.

I highly recommend watching this song! Look, I’m addicted to this now, and I ask you to listen to Helen Sjöholm (aka the Queen of Swedish musical theatre) singing this song from the musical ‘Kristina från Duvemål’a. It is AMAZING! Also, the subtitles here are on point too.
And here’s the English language version of it just for good measure, but the Swedish lyrics are superior in every way.
The sexiest Ajay Devgn has been for me was in HDDCS and in Omkara. Those are the only roles that I remember him making any mark on me, though I’m leaning heavily towards HDDCS just because his character there is a Saint.
Happy Easter to all of you!!! 😀

Ajeeb Mustans trailer looks great. My older kid read a novel that had a character who used an early dialect of sign language on Martha’s Vineyard, and it’s made me think/read about all the sign languages there are in the world and how little most of us learn about where they came from.
I watched Pariyerum Parumal over the last couple of nights. I got to the intermission the first night and I never do this but I looked up reviews yesterday to make sure it wasn’t going to be totally heartbreaking before I finished it. It had been on my list for a while and I’d forgotten why I wanted to watch it, meaning I went into it not realizing it was mostly about caste injustice. Anyway, it was really good and I’m glad I finished it. Then I read a comment talking about how Anandhi is one of the villains because her ignorance causes Kathir so much trouble and pain, and I kind of agree. But also his noble patriarchal impulse to keep her ignorant instead of telling her the truth about her family. So well done as a story, so many shades of gray.
I’m on spring break at the beach even though it’s cold still, just for a change of scene. Happy weekend.

The only thing I didn’t like in Pariyerum Parumal was Anandhi’s ignorance. I understand that the uperrcastes don’t see caste because they don’t face any nuisances but my God how an adult person can be so clueless?!

Agreed! But also it shows so clearly how someone who has the best intentions can still cause so much harm. And at the same time, she’s not wrong, in the sense that they should be able to just choose each other. Her innocence shows how wrong the system is.

If you liked Pariyerum Perumal then you might like Mandela on Netflix. It is satirical movie on caste politics in Tamil Nadu.

Wasn’t this a recast after Rishi passed? Tbh Amitabh makes more sense. Both would be awesome, but Amitabh is somehow the smarter choice. I’m excited for this.
