Happy Saturday! I’m gonna have a PJ day, because it is overcast and rainy outside, and I just got a bunch of new puzzles.
Half-Girlfriend! It’s on Netflix in America, and einthusan everywhere. It’s ridiculous and romantic and has a rain song and overall is just a total throwback to old school romance.
At 7:30am, I will put up an “and PLAY” comment and then we can all comment along right here on this post!
Also, is this a bad weird Bill Gates immitator, or bad weird Bill Gates CGI?

Chetan does use a lot of real-life corporations in his books. I remember when I read 2 States ages ago, and that there was a Finnish lady introduced who worked for NOKIA in Pondicherry.

Shraddha’s eyes during the speech are amazing! She sees herself and the gender inequality she has been subjected to.

The unmentioned tie between Shraddha being forced to drop out of college and the girls not being allowed to go to school because “what is the point of educating a girl” is SO GOOD.

Exactly. And Shraddha’s eyes and expressions show it all.

It even goes back to his first reaction to her engagement being “wait, you are dropping out of college?” Like, he wasn’t thinking “my woman, marrying another”, he was thinking “this is wrong, you should be allowed to finish the schooling”

Vikrant is still a jerk! “No one will mention Riya’s name again.” Yes, because that is going to help Arjun forget her. Idiot!!!

I like that this is as much or more a story of Shraddha than Arjun. She’s the one who met a boy who treated her as a person and started thinking she had value, she’s the one who left her marriage when it went bad, she’s the one who started her own career and found her own life, she’s the one who sought Arjun out again and ended their relationship on a better note, and now she’s the one who is going off and doing what is right for herself without regard to Arjun. Meanwhile, Arjun just went to college, met a girl, finished college, came home, and stayed dedicated to his village and life plan all along.

I love that even the passing “setting him up” woman is still a full human being and not just a soundboard for his troubles

And Vikrant’s “perfect” wife is a full person, not just a symbol of him living the good life complete with beautiful wife.

One of the best things about this movie, it’s only 2 hours long, but it feels like a full on Hindi film. Complete with random cul de sac pointless pre-finale plot point just to make the finale feel bigger. I just rewatched Daawat E Ishq, it’s still wonderful, but that happy ending is RUSHED.

I will say that Vikrant is being a really good friend in the “free housing, pay bail” kind of way. Even if he is a terrible friend in the “give advice” kind of way.

And his eyes in the taxi scene, I know he is married and says he loves his wife but the eyes said something else

I could see Vikrant just deciding that he is going to play it like he is in love no matter if the script says it or not.

Okay, I don’t think the white woman’s Hindi is dubbed! She goes back and forth between Hindi and English and it sounds like she is actually speaking it!

Good on the film! There are plenty of white ladies who talk Hindi, and if you cast for the role instead of just for “sexy looking white lady”, it’s not hard to do!

Okay, now I am worried about Vikrant who is gay but has been hiding it from himself. OH!!!!! OH!!!!! Maybe it is the same character as he plays in Made in Heaven!!!!!! He had a passionate teenage romance, went to college, had a one sided relationship, left college and decided to try to be married, but he is going to grow a beard and go to India and have a passionate reunion with his first love.

But, she was dying? I think I am going to need a long detailed explanation of this.

It wasn’t true. She said it because he would never let her go

But now her Mom also thinks she is dying? And, like, she quit her job and stuff? This is A Lot.
Although I still like it better than the movies where she pretends to hate hima nd break up because she is dying. Pretending to be dying to avoid a break up is SLIGHTLY less dumb.

Maybe Shraddha pretended she was dying but to me, the old Shraddha did die. Shraddha had to kill her to move on. She had to cut those ties. Maybe she did it partially for him, but she did it for her too! She fulfilled her dreams!
