Happy Wednesday!!!! And happy Cinco De Mayo!!! “Mayo”? Or is it “Maya”? Or something else? “Mayo” just doesn’t seem right.
I’ll start!
Watching: I decided to do Half Girlfriend as my friend movie pick tonight, in honor of Bill and Melinda Gates breaking up. Otherwise, not much exciting going on with my watching. Oh! I watched the Knutby documentary!!! And what I got from it was that everyone in Sweden is gorgeous, and I need more pure white walls and floors in my life.
Reading: Rereading Getting Rid of Bradley for the millionth time. It’s so good! You should all read it! There’s so many dogs. And such a likeable hero!
Thinking: Packing! I’ve finished all my linens, all my clothes, all my books, half of my kitchen stuff, and all that is left is the weird fiddly little things like the bowl of barrettes on my bureau or my little collection of scented candles. The problem being of course, the fiddly stuff takes the LONGEST!!! I can pretty well predict how long it will take to pack a bookshelf, but how long it takes to pack a bunch of fiddly things sitting on a shelf in my bedroom, NO IDEA!!!!
Listening: I need packing energy, so it’s time to pull out some Gully Boy.
Now, question for you! In honor of Cinco De Mayo, Taco or Burrito or Enchilada?
I was a burrito person, but I think I have become an enchilada person. There’s something about a hot chicken enchilada which is just soothing.
UPDATE: Filmikudhi sent in a Cinco De Mayo photo of Theo! He looks just as intelligent and aware as always 🙂

I have seen The Disciple. I was literally counting days to watch it. It’s very good, but also very slow. I didn’t mind because I knew how it will be and also it’s just so well made. Every scene is beautifully filmed and is there for a reason. There are no unnecessary bits. Recommended, but only if you are in mood for something unhurried and realistic.

I tried to watch Tuesdays and Fridays but couldn’t make it. Disliked the hero (and heroine, to a lesser extent) too much. Also, why are you creeps so invested in an 18 year old’s sex life, and was it suggesting the heroine who seems to be like 30 is a virgin? WHAT was going on. Well, you warned me.

It’s Cinco de Mayo. Maya are the people, Mayo is the month. Different etymologies, almost the same word.
I’d go tacos. Used to be a burrito person too, but out here Mexican food is a more recent arrival and the good stuff is more authentic Mexican and less Tex Mex or Cal Mex, meaning the tacos are delicious. But today what I really wanted was a margarita. Alas, home alone with the kids and haven’t trained them up on cocktail mixing yet.
Haven’t watched much. Started Middle Class Melodies because I wanted something sweet and earthy and I’m a little afraid Uppena will have sad parts. Also Film Companion is doing a whole series on Irrfan and the post they put up on Paan Singh Tomar made me want to finally watch that one after having it on my list forever. It’s also probably sad but I can work it in if I’m alternating? I don’t know, thoughts welcome. Also I watched I Care a Lot with husband over the weekend and that one was good and very entertaining (though maybe approach with caution if you have a loved one in a care home). Fantastic performances by Rosamund Pike, Dianne Wiest, and Peter Dinklage. I liked Eiza González too as Rosamund’s romantic partner in crime.
Listening: for this Mexican American holiday, I’ll leave you with two Mexican American singers.

I think Paan Sing Tomar is very very sad. In the sort of “systems don’t give people options to rise from poverty” kind of way. But I don’t know for sure, I haven’t watched it either!
We’re getting some for real Mexican food in Chicago now too, and it disturbs me! The midwest had a nice several decades of fake cheap ingredients fast food style Mexican, and now sometimes I order a taco and it is what I am used to (hard shells, unidentifiable ground beef, beans from a can, etc.) and sometimes it is this delicious thing with real ingredients delightfully mixed together. It’s confusing! I just want my burrito and my Horchata from the big plastic Horchata machine!

I have been stuck on the same page of Venetia for months. It was great and I was reading fast but then Venetia’s sister-in-law with her annoying mother arrived and I got stressed and couldn’t move on with the book. Should I force myself to read, or it will get worse and more annoying ?
In the meantime I finished a book of an American girl who married a Tamil guy. I was excited to read it because I’ve been following the girl on twitter for a long time and I’m a sucker for international love stories. Unfortunately I didn’t like the book because it wasn’t real. I mean, the girl is very open on all social media about her life, how she met the guy and how they married, but the story in the book is completely different. She changed the names, how they meet, on which continent the meet, and all the rest. Sure it’s her book and she can reveal how much she wants, but why change all the story if she didn’t have any problems with telling it on twitter, youtube, quora, tik tok and ig? Sorry for my rant but I can’t stand those semi-true books. Or make it real, or pure fiction.

I haven’t read Venetia since high school, but I know it is a favorite of a lot of people, which seems to indicate it will get better?
How odd! About fictionalizing to that extent. You are right, it doesn’t make sense. And makes me wonder how many other “memoirs” are semi-fictional. I’ll tell you all the personal stories in my book/on this blog are 100% true 🙂 Well, true as I remember them, every once in a while my parents real read it and say “that’s not how I remember it”.

I’m also so stupid / gullible that I didn’t realize the story will be all fake and so when I was reading about her dating this misterious Indian guy with name and all details different from her husband I was like: can’t wait when she will dump him and meet her true love. Only in the middle of the book it occured to me that it won’t happen because the story is fake! LOL I’m an idiot

HA! Have I told you you about when I tried to watch Giant? It’s this big old Hollywood movie, very long. So I got it from the library and started watching and was really surprised because there were no opening credits or anything. It just dropped right into the story, very adventurous and interesting. Anyway, I watched for almost an hour before I realized there were 2 DVDs and I had put in the second one first.

I’ve been out with a cold all week, so I was very happy about the audio option on the Lady Hardcastle books. By now I am sufficiently recovered to follow the trail of stuff they reference. That was the last straw that got me to finally watch “The Pirates of Penzance”. At least the film version on YouTube. Very fun.

And I think I may not have ever seen The Pirates of Penzance? My sister and I were obsessed by The Mikado for a while, but never really expanded beyond that.

Hey, don’t put pressure on us! The potty training will work out in summer and he’s hard at work on the empathy, pinching us till we say “ow”. His current innovation, though, is imagination. Just today, he told me how his toy cars had pulled down his socks and how he wants to reach the sky.

Well, I suppose imagination is important too. So long as he doesn’t spook himself, I know a 3 year old who keeps giving herself nightmares by deciding the specks on her crib are blood, or the shadow on her door is a hand, and so forth.

I’m only commenting on this because I was just thinking about Goriye a few days ago and how incredible a song it is and just had a dance party to it alone.
Also, enchiladas. I flip flop depending on my mood, but I always end up back at enchiladas sooner or later.
