Saturday Small Talk: Chat Away While I Pack and Break and Pack and Break and Pack

Happy Saturday! I woke up feeling all discombobulated, I think because I had too much screen time yesterday. We had our watchalong, and then almost right after I had a Friends movie watch and we did K3G. Great fun of course, but got me all weirdly hyper and funny feeling. Plus, of course, my apartment is being destroyed and moved into boxes.

Things to talk about!

Radhe item song! What do we think? I think I really like the look of it actually, kind of fun vintage-y feel, and I love Jackie’s pink colors.

It’s the 6th anniversary of Piku!!!! Do you still like the movie just as much as when you first saw it? Do you think, in Fictional World, Deepika and Irrfan would still be together 6 years later?

I watched K3G with my friends last night, which raised many questions:

  1. Why is the Rani-Amitabh relationship so creepy feeling?
  2. Why is Poo so ridiculously horrible to everyone?
  3. Do the Grandmas live in a temple? What is up with that?
  4. Really, Hrithik doesn’t know how to tie his shoes STILL?

  1. I am disappointed with Radhe songs…it just seems generic…Salman songs used to be wild/fun…something ridiculously silly and over the top…now it’s just the bare minimum…

As for the K3G questions – Maybe Amitabh-Rani affair was supposed to be a sub-plot in the movie…Rani is still alone…Amitabh is lonely after his wife spends all day moping…so they grow close and have an affair.

    • Oh oh! The happiest possible ending, Jaya leaves Amitabh and goes off to live in happiness with SRK, and Amitabh and Rani get together.

  2. Today I am full of sympathy about your move. We spent most of today emptying out my aunt’s apartment that she moved into two years ago. Meaning there wasn’t a lot of the small sentimental stuff that builds up over decades. (Marie Kondo has a whole category for sentimental items and you’re supposed to leave them for last after you’ve built up practice making decisions about and organizing less emotionally fraught stuff. Have you ever read that book? Was wondering when you mentioned your miscellaneous objects dilemma because it overlapped perfectly.) But there was a whole apartment full of furniture, and just me and my husband and a truck. We haven’t done this kind of move in many years now, for our last move we paid people, but my aunt passed last month and put me in charge of the will and all her stuff, and she lived in another part of the state and had a lease that was running out, so there we were. Everything went as well as it possibly could have and we’re done and…my arms are so tired I can feel the weight of my phone right now in my biceps. So it goes.

I like Jacqueline’s pink pantaloons and her bare feet. And I like that they created spectacle through good staging and filming rather than making the lead go full sex appeal with just a bunch of camera close-ups. The song is kind of blah but it’s fun to watch.

I like Piku better than when I first watched it, it’s grown on me with every watch. And having seen more Irrfan films lately, it’s still one of my favorite characters he played. I think they would still be together, though maybe not married.

And yes, all of that in K3G is ridiculous, and Amitabh with Rani always creeps me out.

    • This week I spent a lot of time throwing things away which was SO SATISFYING. Stuff like, that shampoo you don’t really like but you bought once in an emergency and it doesn’t seem worth it to throw it out so you just keep it on the shelf for years. I didn’t even mind the up and down and up and down the three flights of stairs to the dumpster, because it just felt so goooooooooooood. But also, now my back feels locked up again. Get a massage!!!!! Is my advice to you. If you’ve been vacced that is. I thought it would be scary, but with masks and me and the massage person being vacced, it was just as relaxing as ever, and it made my muscles super super happy.

I hadn’t thought about it, but I bet you are right and they wouldn’t be married. Dips wouldn’t be comfortable with that kind of commitment and Irrfan would just go along with her. I imagine them each keeping their own business and their own money and just sharing a bedroom and a sort of private part of life together.

  3. 1. Amitabh definitely lust after Rani, because she was his type. She resembles a lot his wife: petite, the same hair, cheeks, but younger.
    2. Poo wants to be the biggest bully so the rich kids in school won’t bully her for her descent or looks.
    3. I always thought they life is some super fancy nursing home for rich grannies. but it’s interesting when I now think about it because wasn’t Amitabh, as the son, supposed to life with his mother and take care of her? Or maybe the grannies life in a remote part of the Raichand mansion. The house is so big they can life there and not seeing each other. But isn’t it wrong? I mean Amitabh is all “the Indian tradition is so important”, but doesn’t care for his mother. Hypocrite!

    • I like your Poo theory! Makes her much more forgivable.

  4. I think the grandmas live in a spiritual/religious ashram because they want to live there. It’s not uncommon in India.

I don’t know how Hrithik survived boarding school without knowing how to tie laces. Were all his shoes pre-tied?!! Nothing’s impossible when you’re Raichand-rich!

    • I figured he used velcro! That’s what I did, before I knew how to tie my shoes. When I was THREE YEARS OLD.
