Happy Wednesday! And happy birthday to Sonam Kapoor!!! We still haven’t picked the Sonam movie to watch this weekend.
I’ll start!
Reading: I started the Ms Marvel series while getting my pedicure yesterday! It’s really good! She talks about Jersey City a lot (hey Emily!) and about feeling weird because she takes samosas to school for lunch and there’s good lessons about doing the right thing but also respecting your parents and staying in school. And lots of Urdu thrown in for those of you who feel like practicing your Urdu/Hindi!!!
Watching: Over my birthday, I watched the HBO series The Flight Attendant. Super fun and good and twisted and funny. And female friendship is, like, the most important thing which is always nice to see.
Thinking: my birthday trip is almost over, booo!!! I committed to being logged on and back at work at noon. Which means I have to leave the hotel by ten. But I still get one more fancy Starbucks drink (courtesy of my sister who sent me a coupon) and one more fancy hotel shower.
Listening: Penn Masala’s new album! Because I am lame and predictable!
Now, question for you! It’s Sonam’s birthday! What is your favorite Sonam Kapoor movie?
This is so hard! Between Khoobsurat, Ek Ladki, and Veere. But I think I am going to go with Veere? At least for today.
I found a trailer for Popka:

Oh my god, you’re right. It looks perfect. Why is Akash so needlessly aggressive about coming out? Does the mum get laid? So many thrilling possibilities in a movie of thrills.

But is Akash the one in blonde wig? Or is this someone else?

I thought he was the son?? Honestly, who knows. Mysteries and thrills!

Yay! So happy you’re reading Ms. Marvel! Now you can tell us if you spot any Fawad-worthy characters. Maybe I missed something. Fun fact, the high school she goes to used to be my polling place before we moved the next neighborhood over. It’s drawn exactly as it is. Meaning they’ll have to film there, right??
My favorite Sonam movie is Veere di Wedding, but my favorite Sonam character is from Delhi-6. I like her independence and feistiness, but without swinging over into whackadoodle like she does in Khoobsurat.
Watching: tried out Memories of the Alhambra because it has the same male lead as CLOY but in a totally different character. The premise seemed like too much and not my bag, but it got more interesting than I thought so now I’m still going. Granada is pretty, they make good use of it.
Listening: 99 Songs mixed in with other stuff. I’ve decided the songs I really like are Oor Aariyam Vaanavil and Poyisonna Posikiduven, though Naalai Naalai is the one that keeps getting in my head. It cracks me up that the songs video is half the length of the movie.

Oh, Sonam week song! I post this whenever I have an excuse, it makes me happy.

I’m so happy I am reading Ms Marvel too!!!! And I think I’m going to have to resurrect DCIB Book Club just for it. But maybe like one issue a week or something? So it’s not overwhelming. Also, it is SO Jersey City!!!! I love it!!! Not as a Jersey City-ian (Citian?) but as someone who does not live in New York or LA. I am so sick of those being the default locations for everything, I love that this is a character who is firmly grounded in a distinct place that is NOT New York or LA and the author trusts the audience to be able to handle it.
Well, I think that’s it, we have to watch Veere Di Wedding this week! I’ll put up an official announcement post in a bit. And I am very excited because I love it too!
I love it that “Oor Aariyam” is the song that LITERALLY is supposed to save the world, and yet Rahman knew Naalai was going to be the hit of the movie and put it over the end credits!

Summer holidays started last week, my son is always home so I don’t have enough time to watch movies. Apart from that I don’t have luck for movies lately.I started some but they are all trash e.g a “modern Devdas story”. You know the sleazy guys who are in every movie and their only job is to try to molest the heroine and be beaten by the hero? In the movie I’m watching the creepy guy is the hero. Will watch it just to see how it ends.
Also in the evenings I watch Panipat but
A) It’s not a movie for a white person who know nothing about Indian history
B) It’s not a movie to watch at 11 p.m
I watch 15 minutes a day and had to pause to understand what is going on because they mention so many kings and kingdoms and rules in every scene I’m confused. Probably I’m confused also because Arjun looks great and his clothes emphasize his wide arms + Gashmeer Mahajani is also in this film.
This is Gashmeer:

Oooooo, Panipat!!! You have to report back to us.
Also, continue your efforts to get your son into Indian movies. It could happen! He’s getting older! He could turn romantic!

My son keeps asking me who is who and what is happening in the movies I watch, but hestill doesn’t have patience to watch entire movie with me.
I was going to watch 99 songs, but einthusan has it in tamil and in hindi, in which language I should watch it? I’m more into tamil, because A.R Rahman is tamilian, and I like the sound better, but wasn’t the movie made in hindi?

The songs were made in Tamil, the dialogue in Hindi. So I would say watch it in Hindi, and but listen to the songs in Tamil maybe?

Oh, do report back on Panipat. I still want to see it, but I don’t want to care about kings and battles or whatever.

Haseen Dilruba trailer is out, and OMG I’m so excited. Can’t wait. I missed Harshwardhan Rane so much. I don’t understand why he doesn’t get more offers. He is perfect! Also this movie looks like a fun role for Vikrant who will play innocent as well as creepy guy.

Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaay! I was wondering, I’ve been getting emails from Zee5 about “coming soon” movies which didn’t happen before.

Ooh, there’s a close-up of Vikrant putting in contact lenses. Baazigar vibes.
Taapsee is one of those actors who always makes me want to see a movie because she’s in it.

Yes! I was also thinking about Baazigar.
