Wednesday Watching Post: What Are You Watching and Reading and Thinking and Listening to the Week of Hrithik/Kirre’s Birthday???

Happy Wednesday!!!! I woke up way too early this morning and now I am sleepy. On the plus side, I also had time to make my bed for once.

I’ll start!

Watching: I am 2/3rds done with Star Trek The Original Series! Once I finish-finish, I get to start Next Generation and learn all about that thing. Also I just started Shakespeare and Hathaway, which is super light and fluffy and sunny, so good for winter watching.

Reading: Not much, and now I feel kind of stupid because I’m not reading much. But life is hard! And I work all day! And it’s so much nicer to have something on TV and do a puzzle than read a book.

Thinking: Cleaners come on Saturday! I’m so excited! And nervous. I really don’t want to be disappointed. I should probably leave while they are here so I can come back to a lovely sparkling home instead of obsessing over how the sausage is made.

Listening; It’s Hrithik Week!

Overall, I think my favorite Hrithik song is “Tu Meri”. Just so joyful!

      • I watched Ek Pal Ka Jeena and immediately thought about Aila Re from Malaal. Meezaan for me is like Hrithik 2 – very handsome, great dancer, son of a famous father. I will never understand why he isn’t more demanded.

        • Yes, Angie. Where is Meezaan? Loved him in Maalaal, then he was miscast in that horrible Hungama 2, and nothing since. He needs a brooding, barechested role where he’s a bad boy who rejects the good girl who wants to save him, then comes to his senses. Or something.

  2. I watched a malayalam movie Madhuram. People said it’s a feel-good film. It also has Joju George in a romantic role. A good, cuddly actor doing romance? I just had to watch it! But stupid me forgot that feel-good in malayalam is diffrent than feel-good in all other industries. There are some nice, heartwarming scenes, but in the end the movie takes your heart and breaks it in million pieces.
    Still I recommend it, because it’s sweet, Joju is great and there is also Arjun Ashokan ( He played the sweet guy who was in love with the heroine since they were kids in “June” , so cute),

  3. “’83” is still held over at our cinema with nothing new in Hindi/Punjabi on the horizon; we’re getting “Super Sharanya,” “Meow,” and “1945,” none of which I’m interested in. BUT our mutual experience of new “Tamasha” inspired me to rewatch the old “Tamasha,” the one with Dev and Meena and Ashok Kumar. It has been given the Tommydan Treatment(TM):

    –which has in turn led me down a little rabbithole of rewatching favorite Ashok Kumar movies. “Mahal” is so! good!

      • It is definitely the superior “Tamasha,” LOL. Dev plays a self-admittedly useless dork who’s in love with an aspiring actress (Kaushalya, not a performer I otherwise know but she’s great fun here), who is in turn in love with Ashok Kumar* and just wants to keep Dev on the hook so she can get him to finance a film for her. Dev’s grandfather is hip to this situation but Dev has fibbed that he’s dumped Kaushalya and is instead sweet on a nice non-dancing completely imaginary girl. Therefore grandpa fakes a heart attack and demands to meet the honewalli bahu before he dies. Dev and Kaushalya’s film-making friends run all around town to nurses’ hostels and junior artist suppliers and so forth, eventually coming up with Meena Kumari to pretend to be Dev’s imaginary girlfriend. Light, sweet, comedy-of-errors stuff. The Bad Girl(TM) comes out much better than you would expect.

        *Literally, it’s Ashok Kumar and his character name is ALSO Ashok Kumar and is also a movie star. I have no clue what the point of that was, but it delighted me. He swans around in a big white hat, toying with his cane and smoking beautifully. Sigh.

  4. Oops, forgot to answer your Hrithik question, and I actually do have opinions on this one. The music of “Khwaja, Mere Khwaja” is not my favorite, but both the lyrics and picturization are sooooo beautiful:

  6. My favourite Hrithik song is this. It is nice to see how much he and Tiger contrast in terms of style. He is so effortlessly good in this, not breaking a sweat. I need a dance movie with Hrithik, Shahid Kapoor and Dhanush. Make some sort of plot, throw in some dancing and it will be all good!!

  7. Haven’t watched anything new (to me) lately. Last few movies I watched – Father Goose (fun), Gigi (icky), Ghost and Mrs. Muir (great) and Heaven Knows Mr. Allison (good). I was swooning over Robert Mitchum in the latter and now have yet another old movie star crush. I really should have explored this era much sooner! Have been rewatching/showing some favorites with grandfather – like North by Northwest, Psycho, Murder on the Orient Express, a couple of Bengali and Hindi films. He has always been a classic movie fan, something I can share with him now. His memory isn’t the best now, so I have to guess which movie he’s referring to from clues, which is fun. I was impressed that he instantly recognized James Mason the minute he showed up in NxNW!

      • I kept wondering whether I was missing something, because I thought it was a beloved and well-regarded musical. But right from the opening song with the old man singing about little girls, I had misgivings. Nobody should remake this!

        I gotta say, I haven’t had a good experience with Hollywood musicals recently. Between Gigi, Meet Me in St. Louis and Gay Divorcee, they have ranged from bland to icky.

          • Okay to elaborate – all the parts with him and Ginger dancing were spectacular, it’s the plot and particularly his character which left me wanting. Also, the music was not memorable. But I want to watch the other Fred-Ginger movies, if only for her who I adore.

          • Try Shall We Dance, that has better music and dancing and more Ginger. Top Hat’s okay too. Flying Down to Rio is they are just supporting, same with Follow the Fleet. I hate Swing Time but everyone else seems to love it. Vernon and Irene Castle is dull dull dull. Carefree is WEIRD. And Barkley’s of course is a strange flashback modern version.

            But also, Bandwagon! I am almost positive you will like that. And probably Easter Parade too.

            If you want just fun musicals that might not be Astaire-Kelly, Good News is a kick, and West Point Story, and Neptune’s Daughter and Nancy goes to Rio and Royal Wedding.

  9. I saw Encanto and was disapointed. I have seen Vivo last year and absolutely loved it for the plot but mostly for beautiful music written by Lin-Manuel Miranda. So when I read he is working on new Disney animated movie set in Colombia I was super excited and couldn’t wait. Now I saw the movie and it was odd. But the worst thing is that I didn’t like the music. I mean, it’s good but too packed. Every song has like 20 other melodies inside and the mood changes every minute. Definitely too much stuff! My son loved the soundtrack and he is listening to it all day long. Which can be tiring but also makes me happy because my love for spanish started with the music and I hope he will also like it.

    Little Encanto spoilers: There is one older person who is very mean to the protagonist all the time. In the end she acknowledges she was terrible just to be silenced by the protagonist who was like: Oh you shouldn’t feel guilty. You’re such a great person who keep our family together, it’s my fault etc .. Man it was like watching Colombian K3G 😉
