Sunday WatchAlong: 11am Chicago Time! The Pirate! Available for Rent for a Small Price on All Major Streaming Services! Also, It’s Ridiculous

Yaaaaaaaaaaaay, an American musical! So glad I get to share this one with you. And it is good for y’all to see it, because this is one of many classic American musicals that influenced both Farah Khan and Prabhudeva in their work. For real, Farah even acknowledges this one in particular as one of her hidden tributes in “Dhoom Tana”.

The Pirate!

Judy and Gene Kelly movie, totally ridiculous plot and period setting, but it works because they are both so freakishly charming and talented.

At 11am Chicago time I will put up an “and PLAY” comment and then y’all can comment along with me from there.

  1. I love Judy so much! I never knew before how much I loved. her. I only saw the Wizard of Oz, and well, I was never the biggest fan of the film.

    • YES! She is just magnificent when she’s let to be what she wants to be. Check out Meet Me in St. Louis and Easter Parade too.

  2. I had thought perhaps the busts of Augustus and Caesar in her room were another pointer at wanting a wider and more adventurous world, but now that she’s destroyed all these other statues now I’m thinking she maybe just wanted a stock of ammunition close by her door.

  3. Of course she knew the only thing she had to apologize for was insulting his acting! Everything else just rolls off his back.

  4. Imagine a parelel world where this whole movie is the pilot for a TV series. Wouldn’t that have been amazing? Judy and Gene traveling through 18?? world having adventures and solving mysteries?

      • LOL, it’s just for family reasons rather than any gainful study. My mother’s family is Egyptian and had to flee in the 1880s when the khedivate became a British satellite state and the Karaite community lost their dhimmi status.

          • Despite only being there for a few decades, they managed to screw Egypt’s ethnic/religious equilibrium up pretty thoroughly. Busy beavers ( ; Though the really, really nasty stuff only came after the revolution with the Arab Socialist Union.

  6. Nephew A really really likes The Nicholas Brothers and will sit still and quiet to watch them. But then start trying to jump off things and over things as soon as the song is over. So it’s a mixed bag.

    • A very legitimate concern before the advent of arc lighting. I have musicologist chums who work on 19thc. stage music and they never cease to complain about this or that score that was lost to a theater fire.

    • It’s a waldorf set, no fake fire allowed. That is me making fun of forest preschool policies that only I know about.

  7. “How long is this movie?”
I think it is almost over.
“They’re never even going to get on a boat?”
As much as I like the clown song I too am a bit bummed about that.

  8. When did people stop liking clowns? I was watching Mera Naam Joker the other day and thinking about this. Half the people I know claim to be scared of them. Is it all because of IT?

    • Nor did I! And this is definitely a great watchalong movie, probably better than an objectively “good” film would have been.
