Happy Thursday! I missed Wednesday Watching yesterday because I was so distracted by hating Ranbir, so I’m putting it up a day late.

I’ll start!

Watching: I watched Wedding Season! Good Lord is that a light movie. I will be writing a review, but know now if you need a super light weight movie, it is this movie.

Reading: I am considering reading a mystery series. I always read mysteries in the fall, children’s books and comic books in the summer, romance novels in the winter, and spring is potluck. It’s beginning to get fall-y and I am beginning to feel mystery-y.

Thinking: I committed myself to a whole bunch of movie discussion groups next month, in a “it’s fall! I should get my brain working!” move. And now I have to watch 11 movies in 3 weeks. Hmmm.

Listening: Rahman did this song at his concert which reminded me it exists and now I am obsessed:

Now, question for you! What do we think about the Vikram-Vedha trailer?

More important question, are Hrithik’s visible forehead wrinkles more attractive or his beard?

I do love a beard, but I think in this particular case, the wrinkles are are better.

    So, is Hrithik the bad guy? Or is it going to be some sort of bad guy is the really the good guy seeking revenge from perceived good guy who is really the bad guy? Or something like that? (And Saif certainly has entered the “mature male body” phase.)

  2. Watching/Listening to a bunch of film songs while trying to write. Vikram Vedha looks great and Hrithik is just so insanely intense, the wrinkles, beard and smile just work. Glad he can just let go a bit, but also be intense while acting this part.

    The New Brahmastra song – Dance Ka Bhoot was released today. So far YJHD songs that are almost 10 years old seem better than the songs in this movie, for me. There isn’t just the same magic.

    • I agree, honestly the song just doesn’t work like all the others in this movie. Even wake up Sid had a good soundtrack with Iktara being a standout. Also why are the costumes so bland in this movie, I get you want a modern style movie but that doesn’t mean having the most boring costumes ever. Like I’m hoping they’ll have some cool superhero costumes at least but I feel it’ll just be a grey t shirt. Removes all the possibilities of starting some new trends like YJHD did

      • Bet you a million dollars Ranbir refuses to “waste time” on hair/make-up/clothes because he is an Actor and therefore just wears the same thing all the time

        • I know because serious actors like Marlon Brando and Robert de Niro never ever had interesting costumes or make-up. You know as Ranbir is on the same level as them and is India’s answer to an oscar. It’s only stars like SRK who sit on the makeup chair all day long. It’s not like SRK actually did theatre and is much more trained than a man who fooled around in NYC for 2 years. This is sarcastic btw.

  3. Reading: What you wrote about Ranbir…again so well thought-through…
    Watching: By looking for information about Liger, I stumbled about a video-review of Baradwaj Ragan (one of those critics I’m interested in the reviews) and I thought “maybe he did also a video-review of Zero. I had read his review and was genuinely happy that he had perceived the movie in the same vein as me (which unfortunately not many did). I found his “In Defence Of Zero” which made me happy again! Zero is such a bold and out-of-the-ordinary movie with at least three different layers and simply magical that it saddened me to be called flop or even disaster.

    listening: again and again Rahman songs (starting with DilSe, my first Rahman-songs-movie)

  4. I finally watched a movie I enjoyed and that didn’t feel like 100 hours long- Chandramukhi (Marathi new movie, not the old tamil one): A beautiful dancer/poetess/tawaif falls in love with a super hot, sensitive, shy guy.
    Who knew they still make movies like that? A perfect Angie movie! If it wasn’t enough, the soundtrack, written by Ajay–Atul is beautiful and a little old-school. The cinematography and colours are also so pretty.
    The movie has no depth, unfortunately, and the choreography in some songs is terrible, but who cares if we have two hot people in a boat talking about poetry? Or songs like this one (I’m obsessed with this song, the melody, the actress, everything is perfect)

    Also this is my tweet I’m very proud of, but seems nobody except me appreciated:

    • Kala Chashma is apparently a TikTok trend. There’s an entire prank/dance where someone pretends to fall on the floor, slowly gets on their hands and knees, and twerks on beat to the intro of the song. Jimmy Fallon and Demi Lovato did a really bad version of it, and Sid shouted them out. TikTok isn’t working on my computer right now, so I can’t find any legitimately good versions of the trend, but here’s Jimmy and Demi’s

  6. I skipped your post yesterday because frankly, I’ve had enough of Bollywood negativity on twitter recently, your blog is my happy place. I’ll share something that made me happy yesterday –

    I didn’t expect to hear Apna Time Aayega playing, I thought he had stopped performing in recent years and that too to someone else’s song!

    • OMG, that is DELIGHTFUL!!! I’m gonna fan gush for a second, did you see how great he was with the kids too? He did goofy dancing with minimal physical contact, so they could have fun and not feel uncomfortable. Even at the end, two of them got a loose hug, one got a kiss, and one got a handslap. He customized to their exact needs what he would offer them.

          I had a beautiful srk day yesterday, watched Josh and Karan Arjun and a little of Om Shanti Om.
          I absolutely love the chemistry between him and Salman in KA. I’m not generally a Salman fan but I wish they’d do another film where they are equal leads. For such a grossly violent film it’s so sweet.

  7. Back to the movies this week with Loop (looop,whatever) Lapeta. So fun!

    I confess I’ve never seen Run Lola Run, but I’ve heard a lot about it. I have seen an earlier Indian remake, Ek Din 24 Ghante. The original movie was (apparently) a bit surreal in plot along with a lot of imaginative filming. ED24G takes all of that out so it’s just a movie about a woman trying to get some money to her boyfriend. The result is the most incredibly slow, dark, and boring suspense movie ever. There is a bit of a twist ending, but it’s not much of a twist. You may well ask why I watched it in its entirety, and the answer is that it has Rahul Bose and Nandita Das, and it took until the end of the movie for me to understand that they could be in a movie that bad.

    Loop Lapeta goes in a totally different direction, and leans into the surreality to make it really frenetic and funny. It’s also really sweet, which I’m guessing is also different from the original, with added LGBT subplot. I laughed out loud in several places, and although I was so tired I was planning to just watch the first hour, I wound up finishing it. My only quibble is it takes a bit of time until you understand what’s going on–I’d say about a third of the movie. It’s fun before that, but after you get it you can relax a bit. It’s exactly what I needed after a hard work week.

    • Talking about Rahul Bose. I recently saw there is a series with him on Netflix “Eternally Confused and Eager for Love”. Rahul plays the father of the protagonist. Have you seen it MissBraganza? I’m reading about it now and seems it’s produced by Farhan, Zoya and Reema. So why we haven’t talk about it here? Or maybe we have, but I missed it? Is it any good?

      • I was interested in it, but just got sort of burnt out on that sort of “nerdy boy seeks romance” story. I might have a look, though, now that I know about the Farman-Zoya-Reema connection.

    • I was not planning on watching Loop Lapeta because I was worried it was going to be too dark and weird. But after reading your comment, I definitely will. You have been such a wonderful resource of information to introduce me to some one off movies I would have never watched. I am pretty sure you recommended Shaadi Mein Zaroor Aana also, which I really enjoyed!

        • I hate to admit this but I just bought one month of ZEE5 a while back and watched all the movies that I couldn’t watch before. It’s on Zee5 with subtitles. It’s also available on Einthusan but without subtitles.

  9. WordPress is being a pain, this is Kainaat!

    Whose idea was it to make a 2 minute teaser? It’s not balanced at all, leans heavily in Hrithik’s favor, Saif doesn’t get a single word in. I think it was supposed to convey a clash of equals, which it doesn’t, so I’m skeptical, especially when I checked out the Tamil version.

    Watching – Ms Marvel finally. In the middle of it and loving it! The heart of the show is in the interfamilial relationships and I keep forgetting it’s a superhero show. I’ve heard they changed her powers from the comics but whatever they’re doing here is working for me. I’ll get to your review once I’m done.

    Listening – Watching Turkish shows has introduced me to some of their pop music and I’m loving quite a few of them, they’re on repeat currently. It’s 5 years of The Gentleman today, which reminded me what a banger Bandook Meri Laila is 

    From current songs, Tur Kalleyan from LSC is such a good one! It’s one of those inspirational songs and the Faridi brothers convey it so well with their vocals, even though I don’t understand the lyrics (it’s in Punjabi). Love it!

  10. UGH! I don’t know about Vikran Vedha. The teaser does not have me excited about the movie. Saif looks good and fits his role. Hrithik, on the other hand, IMO feels like he needs to oscillate between looking hot in a movie to intentionally hiding his beauty and looking weird in the next movie just to show that he can act. This is the whole Guzaarish, Super 30 effect and when he gets into these roles, they all seem like some variation of his acting in Koi Mil Gaya (especially Super 30). Big eyes, weird smile, and physical ticks. At worst it feels offensive, and at best it feels gimmicky! In the teaser, I was okay with his intense moments but when he started acting like a “rakshah” it gave me flashbacks of KMG and S30. In the original Vikram Vedha, Vijay Sethupathi looked menacing but not intentionally ugly and deranged.

    I hope I am wrong and the movie is better than the teaser.

    On a separate note, I am so glad you watched Wedding Season!!! Looking forward to reading your review.

    • I think I like Hrithik in this trailer because he looks wild. Like finally so kind of emotion, something different. Everything looks so boring these days in Bolllywood (and in other industries also).

      • Angie – I love this!😊 I was going to tag this comment as “unpopular opinion.” Also, it continues to prove that you and I have the opposite taste in men in terms of looks and yet, like many of the same movies.

  11. I’m so excited about Vikram Veda. The trailer was perfectly edited and Hrithik really does look crazy-eyed…I just hope he doesn’t pull an Amir and commit too hard to
    a particular tick. I used to love Hrithik’s intense face shaking looks, but I really think he could go beyond all that and be more naturalistic actor, like Saif is.

    I’ve been continuing my rom-com rewatch marathon and last Sunday I was able to watch 5 in one day:) Here’s a quick rundown of how my rewatches are going…it’s so much fun to revisit these and see how they’ve held up.

    Shaandaar – still as off the wall as I remember and I think it is getting better with age. You have to be in the right mood for this kind of zaniness, but the fractured fairy tale element is so well done. It is more of a fairy tale than a true rom-com since there is no real impediment/conflict for Alia and Shahid, but it still makes my final list because of the overall light and romantic vibe.

    Befikre – still very underrated and I like it better than DDLJ and maybe even RDBDJ, too. It’s so stylishly done and the Paris setting and Vaani and Ranveer’s chemistry really works.

    Daawat-E-Ishq – the social message element and the revenge plot sometimes overshadows the main romance…I wanted to see them fall for each other more, still some of my favorite Parineeti costume moments on film, she rocks the fake heiress looks, love the music, I really like a lot of what Habib Faisal does, but I don’t see any upcoming projects…I recall maybe he was me tooed.

    Gori Tere Pyaar Mein! – I was worried, that this one wouldn’t survive the rewatch and be removed from my DVD collection of keepers, but it’s still got great parts and my love of Kareena and Imran both makes me still enjoy this flawed rom-com. His character is a jerk but Imran still makes him charming (he better come back to acting or at least directing someday!) and the bridge plot is a little too drawn out

    Love Per Square Foot – this is an underrated rom-com for sure, love the Catholic representation here and Vicky is so sweet in it. Angira Dhar was just OK and I did like her better in the Bang Bajaa Baaraat web series

    currently rewatching Shuddh Desi Romance – I’ve always loved the art and production design of this film (and Rishi Kapoor’s character…one of my faves of his), but I had forgotten how Sushant’s character really does kind of fall for both Parineeti and Vaani and this makes it a little difficult to believe in their happy ending, more a happy for now kind of rom-com.

    Tried rewatching Bachna Ae Haseeno yesterday and that’s a DVD that will definitely be weeded. I may be jumping on the Ranbir hate wagon soon! This movie just doesn’t hold up to the test of time. Stupid writing, some misogynistic treatment of the female characters and a self-satisfied Ranbir just don’t do it for me. However, the three big songs really are perfection and Jogi Mahi will always be one of my favorite Ranbir dancing moments…I LOVE that song.

    For mysteries, I always recommend C.S. Harris’s St. Cyr historical mysteries…also really liked the first two mysteries by Abir Mukherjee in his series set in 1920s India

      • Forgot to mention that I actually love Shraddha Kapoor in Gori Tere Pyaar Mein! (And she is not one of my faves.) That charming and funny sequence when Imran runs away from the wedding during the wedding practice where the families teasingly urge him to run deserved a better movie around it. That’s why I say the bridge plot is problematic because it weighs down the narrative and is definitely a bit problematic (rich girl (and wastrel ex) save village from bad men!). A good baddie turn by Anupam Kher though.

        Shaandaar is one of those movies that people either love or quickly dismiss as a big miss. I loved every moment of it when I saw it because it felt so different from any other Indian rom-com I’d seen. And Shahid’s character is one of my favorites he’s done. He got to show his comedic chops after a while and I’m a sucker for when real life relatives act opposite each other.

        I’m getting super excited about his half-sister Sanah Kapur’s rom-com coming to theaters this month. Called Saroj Ka Rishta and it’s plus-sized rep and looks like it could be fun! Perhaps an antidote to the recent Akshay film.
