Wednesday Watching Post: SRK RELEASE DAY EDITION!!!!!!!!

IT’S NEW SRK MOVIE DAY!!!! I am SO HAPPY! It’s been SO LONG!!!! Plus, I took the day off work so I get to generally pamper myself in addition to movie watching.

There’s only one thing to read about, think about, watch, and listen to today! So let’s talk plans.

I’m gonna get up early, go to the fancy donut place I’ve always wanted to try on the way to the theater, then get a pedicure (I’m thinking Mango Lassi colored), then go stand outside the door of the theater until it unlocks. Watch the movie, happy happy, come home, and immediately write a series of posts.

What are your plans?

  1. I was stupid to not take a day off. So I will finish work at 6.45 then straight to the theatre. I will meet a friend on the foyer at 7pm – we will make a lot of excited noise I think, then movie 🍿 @ 7.20pm.

Kids and their Dad left to look after themselves. Mums gone to Shah Rukh Khan hahahaa. It’s been a long painful wait.

    • Thank goodness, I just got home and now I can read and respond to comments. Stupid international time differences affecting movie discussions!

  2. My original plan was to see it on Saturday with my dad. He’s just as excited as I am. Unfortunately, I came down with what I’m pretty sure is the flu on Monday. Feeling a lot better this Wednesday morning, but I’ve taken two days in a row off work, and idk how many more I’m gonna need. The main flu symptoms are gone except a really bad cough and my voice is nonexistent, which of course makes my job really difficult. Anyway, I’m gonna touch base with my dad later today about Pathaan, but I’m pretty sure he’s gonna wanna wait until I get better to see it. I have a feeling I’ll be the last one on the blog to see it. I hope everyone enjoys it, I will be reading all the non-spoiler stuff (when I can stand to look at my computer screen for more than 5 minutes), and I’ll report back when I do eventually see it!

  3. Leaving for the nearest IMAX in about 5 minutes and I’m so freaking excited. I cried when I saw Taran Adarsh’s review last night. After being so anxious about whether people would like the movie, seeing the positivity was such a relief.

  4. I will not be able to see Pathaan until it streams. But I am SICK today, and I am supposed to write an agenda and finish up other paperworky stuff and it is 58 degrees in my house and my toes and fingers are cold. I plan to read your blog posts and maybe look at reviews online. Happy Pathaan Day!

  5. I had a doctor’s appointment yesterday. She wanted to schedule a follow-up test, something I would need a driver for, and they were unexpectedly able to schedule it today. The receptionist was all excited to have found an early open slot; meanwhile I was telling him, “Hold on a second, I’ve got something important in the afternoon, let me check if I can find someone to drive me!”

    • HA!!!! And OMG, you may be seeing Pathaan at the same theater where I saw Zero (Methuen? Is that a place?) It’s like SRK connects the whoooooooooooooole world.

      • Well, I originally bought tickets for the Methuen AMC but that was wayyy north of where I had to get the lab work done, so part of making today happen involved not only securing a medical transportation unit but also swapping my Methuen tickets out for a screening in Marlboro ( ; Where they don’t ordinarily show Hindi movies at all, so distributors here must be expecting a good response!

  6. Just got home. I am full of relief that he’s back, and he’s back with a bang! After the show, I hit the ladies room and overheard three white high school age girls wanting to have a Shahrukhanathon. β€œYeah, I really like him.” Giggle giggle giggle.

    • Same! I couldn’t enjoy the first half fully because I was so worried that the film wouldn’t stick the landing and be another flop. Phew!

  8. My sister and I will watch it this weekend but for now, we are just listening to the songs on repeat. I am looking forward to reading your spoiler review before watching it!

      • The biggest reason I want to read the review is to go in with eyes wide open on the potential jingoism, especially after reading your quick review. I didn’t do that with Sooryavanshi and ended up hating 90% of the movie.

  9. I’m hoping to see it on Saturday. I wasn’t able to go to Kuttey because of a family situation, but I really hope I can make it to this one! But I did watch two films of note on a couple of long train rides.

The Tamil film Love Today was really clever and the screenplay and the supporting performances were much stronger than the lead pairs’ acting (the director/writer is also the star). I think I heard that the rights have been bought by a Hindi producer and I think it will translate into a really good rom-com with some higher profile stars. I could see Janhvi and Siddhant in it.

Also watched Qala and it was beautifully filmed and definitely “haunting”, but the story was predictable and depressing. I also didn’t think any of the acting was perfect. Tripti is a bit overrated I think, but I do like her choices.

  10. I’m planning to see it tomorrow night if all things go well but I’m mainly excited for you. I’m so glad you enjoyed it!

Also I rewatched Ek Tha Tiger, War, and finally watched Tiger Zinda Hai this past week. All of them are solid action movies but I honestly didn’t connect to any of these movies or characters enough to really care about YRF’s Spy universe plan. How do y’all feel about it?

    • I think I’m okay with the Spy Universe idea, the biggest reason for it to exist is what you just did: watch all the other movies because of the one movie you are interested in. Salman’s cameo is substantive in this film and it is in character as Tiger, and there are other comments about the other movies sprinkled through out. So it does feel sort of “in the know” if you are aware of the other films.

      • Ah gotcha. I think I would be more on board if I loved one of the previous movies but idk maybe Pathaan would be the one that will get me more interested.

    • I’m the same. The whole Hindi film industry race to do a “Universe” of films is silly to me. There’s even the Tamil gangster film universe now by that one director. It’s all just so obviously a desire to be like Marvel and Hollywood. I wish instead that they would stick to the self referential qualities of Indian films that link films together.

I liked Tiger Zinda Hai the best of the three Spy Universe films so far (ETT, TZH, and War). War had its moments but I prefer Bang Bang of the two Anand/Hrithik collabs. Of all of the Salman films I’ve seen the first Dabangg and the two Tiger films are my favorite action masala films of his. So I like all of the films just fine, but they are the ultimate star vehicles and forgettable but enjoyable fluff. I do almost think that Rohit Shetty’s Cop Universe is a little bit more fun because it leans into the camp of it all. Both universes are problematic in the jingoistic and police brutality/toxic masculinity areas, so I can’t fully support either for that reason as well. Ultimately the Brahmastra universe if they expand beyond the trilogy someday really does have the most potential for actual good storytelling.

Give me a franchise featuring female heroines and I’ll really be excited!

      • Oh! I just thought! This movie gives us the possibility of a Dips-Katrina match up film in their “spy universe” characters. That would be AMAZING. And we could introduce a third Super Spy as their partner. Alia I guess would be the biggest female name right now, but I don’t know if she can do action. Oh, Anushka! Anushka as the top female spy of India who ends up working with Dips-Katrina while they leave their love interests at home.

        • Now that would be amazing! I did immediately think of the scene in Avengers: Endgame where the female superheroes had a team up that was cheese galore, but succeeded in the moment. Give us an actual full fledged all female film though and I’m there…The Marvels is coming soon to the MCU and it should be only a matter of time that they do the same in this Spy Universe, right?!

I like Anushka as the third because I want to speed up her filmography past that damn cricket movie and see her do something truly interesting and new again! I think Priyanka or Alia would also be in the mix…or how about Aishwarya as the veteran spy leader? I think that Farhan road movie with Katrina, Priyanka, and Alia will start a trend of more female multi-starrer.

I would also watch a Sara and Jahnvi buddy film in a second!

          • Kareena would also be amazing to add to the universe, too. She did a little bit of fun action in Tashan!

            Like

          • Oooo, Kareena might be perfect! She’s got that old school star power that could match and defeat Katrina and Dips. Oh heck, I’m gonna go write a fanfic.

  11. Aaagh! I have such Pathaan FOMO! Can’t even look closely at Pathaan-related content because I’m trying not to get spoiled until I can see it next year some time! And by then no one will want to talk about it!

No word even on a Japan release! Bollywood Hungama says it’s releasing in over 100 countries, but who knows.

Pleeeeeaaaaassse let it come out in Japan! I’ll fly to Tokyo!

  12. I went to watch it yesterday after making a booking last minute. Of course I didn’t get the best seats. And there were technical issues with playing the movie so we changed to a smaller screen and lots of delays. I am going to watch it again on Friday afternoon and Saturday night in better seats and other theatres that will hopefully give me more eye contact with movie SRK πŸ˜‚
