Happy Monday!!! It’s been a bit of a day, as you can see by me writing this post in the late afternoon. But also, Spring Solstice!

Here is where you get to ask me anything you want from “What is your favorite Holi song?” to “are there Spring festivals in India?” Just keep swinging back here all week as you think of new questions!

  3. So, no word on a release of Pathaan, but, bizarrely, Bang Bang is playing in my local theater next week. At this rate, when do you think they’ll get Pathaan? I’m thinking 2028.

  4. My favourite Alka Yagnik song is Salaam from Umrao Jaan. So much beauty in one song.

    Question: I was reading the list of Alka’s songs and I noticed she worked a lot from 2000 to 2006 and then suddenly almost stopped. In 2004 she had 126 songs, and in 2007 only 22. In the last few years she recorded 3 or 4 songs every year, and mostly for strange, unknown movies. What happened? Did she took a break, something happened or her voice isn’t suitable for newer films?

    Also rewatching old songs made me miss old beautiful shots, with zoom on heroine’s face, and colours and costumes. Why they don’t shot movies like that anymore?

  6. Why aren’t we talking about ARK’s next Gumrah?
    I absolutely love tamil original Thadam and wasn’t convinced when I first heard about its remake, but now I saw the poster and I’m super excited. Thadam has a very good story and twist, but what I loved the most was Arun Vijay raw sexiness. I see similar sexiness on this new poster and I just can’t wait. But maybe I’m expecting too much from Aditya?

  8. Alka Natak has so many fun iconic songs. Hmm.. since you picked Choli Ke Peeche, I will pick Ek Do Teen. It’s also a good one to teach Mr. Toddles numbers in Hindi.

    Also, because of your post about Junglee, I went on Shammi kick and watched Junglee and Kashmir Ki Kali. Junglee was one of my favorite movies as a teenager and now I remember why. Raj/Saira Banu is incredible in the movie. I forgot how incredibly feminist the movie was. I can completely see how it resonated with a teenage me.

    Finally, it was Rani’s birthday yesterday!!! Any chance you are finally up for a Chori Chori watchalong?!?!? I swear it’s really really good! Moody Ajay. Charming Rani. Sweet Sonali. Quirky large family.

      • Nooooo!! Junglee and Chori Chori are so much better than Kashmir Ki Kali. I enjoy it a LOT but it’s not in the same catagory to me.

    • I saw Junglee quite late in life and was totally taken in by Saira Banu. Totally enchanting and captivating, I kept thinking of Audrey Hepburn! I think this was also the movie which made me crush on Shammi Kapoor, specifically in Ehsaan Tera Hoga Mujhpar – something about a man feeling the pain of love is attractive to me!

      • Yes, I love that Shammi falls in love with her and he changes. She is so unapologetically herself! The whole storyline between Saira and Shashikala is incredible. Saira stops Shashikala from killing herself because she is pregnant and will be shamed by society. Saira supports her unconditionally to make sure she has a healthy baby. She never once asks who the father is or whether she is married because it doesn’t matter. If Shashikala wants to have the baby then Saira sees it as her role to support her and ensure that she has the medical care she deserves … period. It’s just overall such a wonderfully progressive movie.

  9. Alka Yagnik – though her youthful voice in thr ’90s was so high-pitched and angelic, the more modern Agar Tum Saath Ho from Tamasha is probably more to my taste.

    Question – Apologies if this has been covered before. I just learned about a movie called What’s Love Got to Do with it?, written by Gemima Khan (Imran Khan’s British ex wife), directed by Shekhar Kapur (his first film in 16 yrs), starring Shabhana Azmi (weren’t she and Shekhar live in lovers in the 80s or 90s?), Emma Thompson, Lily James, and Pakistan’s Sejal Ali. A rom-com-vibes film comparing and contrasting arranged marriage vs mobile app dating to find your one true love. I’ll link the trailer below. Maybe you’ll be interested in covering it for your blog? Not sure if it’s in the USA yet.
