Friday WatchAlong! At 5pm Chicago Time This Week, Can Anyone Make It? And What Should We Watch?

Due to Grandpa’s birthday, I can’t start the WatchAlong until 5pm this week. By the way, my parents take this whole thing SO SERIOUSLY that they were initially trying to figure out a way to schedule Grandpa’s birthday around the watchalong. To which I said “NO! This is more important and DCIB will understand!” You do, right?

5pm WatchAlong! Which either means I pick a shorter movie so we still end at roughly the same time, or a longer movie because people who usually are hurried and late will be on time, or make no changes at all. It’s a total puzzle is what I am saying.

Here are some options:

Sita Sings the Blues

Very interesting animated film intercutting the makers’ personal story of being dumped by her boyfriend after he moved to India with the story of the Ramayana from the perspective of Sita. It’s fun, it’s education, and it’s slightly less than an hour and a half. Oh, and the filmmaker waved all rights to her work so it’s available literally everywhere.

Eega/Makkhi/Eecha

It’s totally fun and totally ridiculous and totally delightful. A man is killed and comes back as a fly to protect his girlfriend, who makes him little fly armor and fly weapons. So fun! So Great! 2 hour and a half hours, and it’s only available for rent on googleply and youtube.

Baashha

Classic Rajinikanth ridiculous over the top fun, really irresistible, and so great to make fun of while you watch it. Once again, only available for rent on youtube and googleplay.

War

As you can see, I am feeling kind of silly this week. And what could be sillier than this Tiger-Hrithik action love story? On Amazon Prime.

Okay, now you tell me what you want to watch, and if you are more or less available this week thanks to the time shift!

  1. I can make it, and if you had to cancel for Grandpa’s birthday it would be okay. Family always comes first. And WHATEVER is chosen, this week I am watching it BEFORE the watch-a-long.

    • Well, this makes me want to pick Sita Sings the Blues just because it would be sucha quick watch for you! But on the other hand, your boys would adore Eega which might make it easier to watch in advance. Hmmm. A puzzle.

    • Yes! I think you will really like Sita Sings the Blues, at least the cartoon/torch song bits.

I think the maker is doing absolutely fine, she’s a working animator with interesting projects. Right now she is working on a similar movie about the Old Testament (Moses I think?) which looks fun.

  2. I should be able to make it until 6:45 CT. I love animated movies. So, I would vote for Sita Sings the Blues. I may be finally getting around to watching Lilo and Stitch this week after reading a fascination piece explaining that Lilo is likely on the spectrum and interpreting the movie from that perspective.

    • Okay, Sita getting more popular! Plus, of course, being the shortest option.

  3. Five pm Chicago time is 7 am Japan time, which edges this into watchable territory for me, and I would definitely watch Sita Sings the Blues again. Probably can’t watch Baasha as my youtube rental choices aren’t the same as yours. War is actually at theaters in Japan now, a few of them, and the typhoon messed up my plans to see it last weekend but I might still go. I saw it (with you all) a while ago but supporting the cause of Indian cinema in the movie theater.

    • Yaaaaaaaaaaay! To all of this and especially you joining a watchalong! I’m thinking more and more it should just be Sita Sings the Blues, so glad you have seen and liked it, and very VERY glad that you might get to see War in theaters.
