A Wedding, A Funeral, and a Law Suit!

3 big news items, about which there are minimal details.  But at least they all come with pictures!

First, Preity is married!  Yeah!  She is now officially Mrs. Goodenough!  Twitter last night had quite a bit of fun with that name.  But the wedding sounds nice, a small thing in LA just with family and close friends.  But she has also more or less confirmed that there will be a huge blowout party later in Bombay for all the famous people to attend.  Oh, and Times of India has somehow managed to lay its hands on a photo of the Mandap for the ceremony.  Looks nice!  Or, you know, “Good Enough.”

Bigger news, Shahrukh’s father-in-law died!  It was apparently very sudden.  As I am sure we all know, he was an army man who first softened towards their romance because he liked Shahrukh’s performance in Fauji.  After a somewhat rocky start (Shahrukh after all was a Muslim actor with no career plan beyond becoming a Superstar.  It did work out, but I can see why a father might be dubious about letting his daughter marry this guy), Shahrukh has apparently become very close to his in-laws.  Again, I am sure we all remember that Shahrukh lost his own parents at a young age, so Gauri’s family is really the only extended family he has.

Anyway, Raees filming is suspended, and Shahrukh, Gauri, and Karan Johar all flew to Delhi for the funeral.  What an odd few years for Karan, he gets to be the only industry guy at both Gauri’s father’s funeral and Rani Mukerjee’s wedding.  Also, I feel kind of bad about putting up these photos, but I know we all want to see Shahrukh being kind and caring at a funeral, right?

(That’s his mother-in-law in red and black next to him, I think)

And a cute photo of the two of them from back in the day:

And finally, we have a very unfortunately timed court case.  Abdul Latif’s son is suing the Raees team, including producers and stars, for using his father’s life story.  Of course, “officially”, Raees isn’t based on anyone in particular.  But apparently, even the set they erected in Filmcity looks exactly like Latif’s old house, so it is pretty obvious what is happening.  A little tacky to file just when SRK has a death in the family, but of course how could he have known that!

Like 90% of the time, these court cases are just a legal form of blackmail.  The production “settles” out of court, and filming is allowed to continue.  Very occasionally they are actually sincere (for instance, the massive international attempt that set brother against brother in an effort to stop the blasphemy that was a Zanjeer remake).  In this case, I should probably reserve judgement, it is possible the son is actually concerned with his family being presented correctly and so on, but I’m going to go ahead and call it another scam.  Mostly because he named the entire cast on the complaint.

When it is sincere, like when Ajay Devgn sued Yash Raj (talk about bad timing!  Pam Aunty was served the papers within days of when Yashji died), they only really name the studio and maybe the main star (I believe Shahrukh was also party to Ajay’s suit, but I think Red Chillies owned a piece of Jab Tak, so it was legitimate to include him).  Naming everyone involved, all the way down to poor powerless Nawazuddin Siddiqui just means they don’t actually want to go to court, they just want to tie up Raees to the biggest extant possible and force the producers to pay them off.

On the other hand, if they do go to court, they definitely have a case.  A google image search for “Abdul Latif Gujurat” pulls up almost as many pictures of Shahrukh as of the real guy.  Everyone knows the films about him, no matter what the producers may say.
