This is a happy one, right? I get nervous ever since someone pointed out I shouldn’t really say “Happy Mangal Panday Day”. But it’s New Years! It’s not like Passover or anything, right?
I was going to have Rosh Hashanah dinner at a friend’s house, but then my aunt died, so now instead I get to go to dinner at Grandpa’s house with Mom and Dad. Fun!
But hey, it’s the year 5780! Things are bound to get better!
Anyway, to celebrate, here are some nice Jewish Indian actors in songs. Nadira, a Baghdadi Jew (meaning part of the Jewish immigrant community in India from the middle-east), was one of the actresses of the 1940s and 50s Hindi film industry. Her most famous and successful role was as the spoiled princess who must be “tamed” in the fantasy film Aan with Dilip Kumar.
And of course our lovely Aditya Roy Kapoor. His mother was a model and item dancer, his grandparents were dancers who taught the Sufi “sama” dance. Isn’t that interesting? A Jewish couple teaching Sufi dance? Anyway, Aditya Roy Kapoor is a lovely young man.
Bad movie, great song.
And finally, the most accidentally Jewish song in Hindi film, “Malang”
Yes, Rosh Hashana is happy but in a serious way. We eat apples dipped in honey for a sweet New Year and wish each other and everyone else a happy, healthy New Year. Though now I’ve reached an age when I say healthy first….By the way, Passover is happy too…’once we were slaves now we are free’ sort of thing. Even Yom Kippur when we fast is happy because instead of confessing all during the year, we have one day and we do it as a community. Everyone confesses to everything so the burden is borne by whole community and we can all try to do better together. And we sing and dance at the end assuming and hoping we’ve been forgiven…
So, my dear Margaret, I hope this year is a healthy, happy one filled with fun, great movies, good friends and a happy dog !
