Moving is SO STRESSFUL!!! Especially when you aren’t sure if you are really going to move or not because you don’t have a place to move TO.
So, almost a year ago, my good friend and I were talking about how she and her wife were looking for a 2 bedroom condo, and I was looking for a one bedroom. And then we realized that if we combined our search, we could afford a two flat standalone building with our own backyard and our own garage and no weird complicated condo bylaws.
We’ve been window searching and talking and stuff for a year, and now we have the money together, and our leases are about to expire, and we are actually looking For Real. And it’s scary and depressing and worrisome. I just want to have a place! And then I can deal with painting and repairing and packing and hiring movers and all the rest of it, but this uncertainty is going to Kill Me.
Especially because I really REALLY want this to work out!!! I want to have a forever home with my closest friends and a yard for Albie and all that great stuff. I really really want it!!!!
So, send all your good vibes my way!!!! Think good real estate thoughts!!! Do not give me advice because it will just make me more worried!!!! Do tell me that I am doing the right thing and it will all work out!!!!
It’s a great idea and I mean that! Good luck with the search!!

Omg you’ve GOT THIS! It is for sure stressful, but every GOOD decision is! I would be worried if you were not stressed. I’ve done this a few times and it’s always a bear, then it works out exactly as it should and you will be SO HAPPY! And being in that kind of communal living thing is so nice and so comforting. I wish I had my closest ones right here instead of a 15-25 min drive away or more. It’s my forever dream of the cul de sac or a commune or something like that. I’m married to someone who is not on board w that, but YOU’RE a free agent and you can make your dreams come true!!! I’m very excited for you (and Albie!)

Thank you! Phew, that makes me feel better. I’ve moved a bunch of time as a renter and it is always horrible, but this is like a whole new level of horrible!
And doesn’t it sound great to have friends living downstairs? Before they got married, my close friend lived in the same apt building as me and it was wonderful.

Gary (Rishi) and Louise lived in our building for 5 years and it was great. Like living in a Seinfeld episode complete with him bursting in abs opening the fridge.

Thank you for following instructions! Isn’t it interesting how everybody has their own needs for comfort? My sister just went through this and she wanted to agonize over every detail with other people and worry and talk and stuff, and I just want someone to tell me it will be okay and then leave me to figure it out on my own.

Thank you!!!!!! I just have to hold on to that through the AGONY of the hunting process. I want an arranged house, where someone just presents my house to me on my closing day and says “this is your house forever and ever, you will adjust”.

Oh and living so close to good friends is amazing!!! The first condo that I bought was across the street from two of my closest friends, and down the street from another close friend. Any time it used to snow, we would just walk over to someone’s house and have a sleepover and it was perfect. We were always in each other’s houses and it was incredible! Also, my closest friends in DC all became friends with each other because they lived in townhouses in the same complex. We have all moved away now but we are still very close and miss living near each other so much!

Yes! I would never want to actual share a house with friends, but each having our own space right next to each other is perfect!

Thank you! Oh, and you’ll appreciate this. My friend and I both consciously dressed up for the showing yesterday. I wore my blue flowered dress with ruffles and leather penny loafers and a pink mask. She wore leather knee high boots, a see through black dress, and a skull mask. On our own we looked okay, but put together as a couple it looked like we were doing cosplay.

Yes! Chicago is awesome, it’s comparatively easy to buy and always has been. It’s one of the things about this particular city, people who are here longtime buy and don’t rent. So I always sort of had it in my mind I would be buying once I was a Grown Up. And now the idea of buying a place where the entire building is mine, and there’s a yard, and a basement, and an attic, and not just a squeezed up little one bed condo is AWESOME.
If I weren’t buying with friends, I could actually afford to get a tiny two room house all to myself just for me and Albie, for only slightly more than a condo. Real estate is funky.

That’s amazing! Having your own home with your rules, and not having to listen to stupid rules like: the animals are not allowed and other stuff. And the garden! I want one too! I will keep my fingers crossed for you.

How wonderful for you and Albie! Don’t forget to fence in the yard and install a pet-door. I know that sound advice-y, but Albie can zoom in and out when he pleases and you won’t have to walk him in bad weather. Oh, but you will have to do poo patrol every few days.

Fence, FOR SURE. Albie Dog is a little explorer, he is always looking for new places to experience. Like the first thing I did when we started talking about househunting was price fence installations. But a good fence and a place where I can just open the door and let him out instead of doing a whole leash and down three flights of stairs and walk thing, would be HEAVEN.

House buying is next level stressful but once it’s done it’s so much better to be in your own place. And our friends moved into the row house next door and we took down the fence between our yards and made a pandemic pod of our households and it’s been great. Sometimes we go a week without seeing each other, other times we’re in and out all the time. Recommended.
