Good Morning! I am ready! I got my google chrome toggle working, my coffee is percelating, the dog got to go in the backyard, life is good! Let’s do this! Margaret watching a movie for the first time on a watchalong!!!!
Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahin
Aamir has a cute hat, Pooja has very 90s hair, that’s basically all I know about it.
In a few minutes, at 7:30am Chicago time, I will put up an “And PLAY” comment and we will go along from there.
Here, and so excited!

I don’t find the music of this one very fetching, but the lyrics/picturization are ubercute!

The picturization is so great- especially the costumes. I love that everyone is wearing the sari in the traditional marathi navari style with the traditional nath (nose ring)

And they just whip Pooja into costume mid-song–such good impromptu friends!

I can’t turn off my film studies mind! How does the significance of this story change between depression era America and 90s India? And why is Clark Gable a hot manly man int he first one, and Aamir a little baby with a hat in this one?
LikeLike
This story is all about teenage rebellion but not in a sad way. They are both smart and resourceful. But they are also immature and hasty. Their journey together is how they grow emotionally but still keep their personalities.
LikeLike
And the original was about economic injustice and the enormous depression era divide between the normal American and the rich American. An average working American man and a rich girl who had no idea what regular people and regular life were like.

I need to rewatch the original. I haven’t seen it in FOREVER.

That plot will always be relevant in India

Well Aamir’s couldn’t have looked hot and manly at this stage even if he wanted?

Margaret, as you haven’t seen this, can you figure out where it differs from the original ?

This is driving me crazy! I haven’t seen It Happened One Night since I was in high school and I didn’t bother rewatching it for this. But stuff like throwing the things on the cruise ship feels very 1930s American films.

Till now everything’s almost same except the song of course. I was thinking of the detectives but I remembered they are in the original

We have to remember to tell Popka, Aamir is introduced in a phone booth that must be on a 2 foot platform to make him seem taller.

YES!!! I was just thinking that! I had fast-forwarded through this quickly just to see if there were any scenes with Ammir’s lifts and that was perfect!

I do remember that Clark Gable’s intro is the same, arguing with his editor on the phone at the bus stop. I don’t remember what the argument is about though.

Also in the original, the other man is a British lord. So she is choosing between European effitism and American hunk on manliness. And i guess in this case she is choosing between experienced soulless man and sweet age appropriate baby man?

For those of you who have seen this before, do we ever find out why Aamir is wearing the hat?
LikeLike
Don’t remember. Maybe he gives a silly explanation later
LikeLike
Nope. That’s just his style in this movie. But it started a WHOLE trend with little boys.
I suspect he is pulling a bit of Dev Anand in this movie. If you think of Dev Anand while you watch it, you will see it.
LikeLike
Dev Anand-Also way way more fun when he was young.

He loves it. He loves it so much that he goes back into the bad guy’s den for it. And then gives it up to get gas for Pooja. Thus the stupid cap becomes the ultimate symbol of his love / the transition from boy to man (the man doesn’t wear it…)

I suspect Aamir’s pretty lucky that “fence” didn’t collapse when he jumped over it!

“Aisan faramosh” being translated to “Ungrateful wrench” seems very harsh.

Why doesn’t Aamir wanna be a cute rascal any more???? He is so GOOD at it! And now he has to be all boring and perfect and wise, BLECH.

The first 3 Aamir movies I saw were Lagaan, Rangeela, and Dil Chahta Hai. So I thought he was just like that all the time! More fool me.

I’ve seen “Nau Do Gyarah” (the Dev Anand version of this same movie), but that was a dozen years ago and I don’t remember if he has a particular hat in it. I did always kind of wonder if Aamir’s distinctive hat in “Ghulam” was meant to start another hat-trend like this one did!

Wait is that yet another adaptation of It Happened One Night?

Yes! And there’s also a Shashi-Sharmila one that’s very cute (“Suhana Safar”).

I’ve seen Suhana Safar, and yeah I would say it is a loose adaptation. I just looked up Nau Do Gyarah, and the song ‘Hum Hai Rahi Pyar Ke’ which Aamir-Pooja dance to in the garage is from that!

I think that song must have been pretty popular, because I have heard it quoted in several movies. ________________________________

I once had to take Amtrak (with the assigned seating, so you can’t put your luggage next to you) from Georgia up to Boston. I can barely sleep on trains anyway and was slowly going crazy with exhaustion. The woman who got on next to me at the DC stopover immediately said, “You just lean over here, honey.” The amount of good she brought into my life vs. the amount of time she was in it is really staggering ( ;

Do you think the fantasy sets look super cheesy to show that it is all a cheap fantasy, or because the Bhatts don’t have any money?

They don’t have money. But I think the point of not showing the guy’s face is purposeful. She is dreaming of her dream guy, but she doesn’t know who the right guy is for her yet.

The original was also during the era of the dust bowl and the great migrations through out America, so this sort of cross country walking travel would be something folks did out of economic desperation, familiar to the audience in that way. And now made silly by a rich girl doing it just for “love”.
