Woot! I am driving 2 hours out of the city and staying at a lodge in a state park and going on long hikes and sitting in bed reading and doing basically nothing else. Including posting. Yes, this will be very VERY hard for me, but I am going to resist posting until I am back on Sunday. Or possibly Saturday.
In the meantime, continue to vote in the new Valentine’s Brackets, enjoy your lives, and be happy!
Hope you have a lovely, relaxing time!

Well, if you believe most people, it’s Yashji’s worst movie. (Keep in mind that most people are boring and difficult to please.) If instead you believe me–connoisseur of post-Osho Vinod Khanna, willing to put some effort into liking things, first saw it in a hotel room in Tupelo while sick with the flu–it’s great! It’s got plural-marriage drama and illegitimate-kid drama and a multigenerational cold war confined to a single house and weird pragmatic alliances and theoretically joyful/situationally horrifying qawwalis and hallucinations and Ahswini Bhave coming to the rescue of her rival on! a! horse! Not a single costume could fairly be termed “uninteresting” and the dueling pistols look like a toddler decorated them with macaroni. It not infrequently makes me cry.

I have to say you’ve sold me on this. I love Kachche Daaghe AND Vinod playing too young. And Sunil being bossy. I guess there’s no homoeroticism between him and Vinod but I can deal with that and whatever happens in the second half. I do love Neelam so.

If you can settle for Vinod-Anupam homoeroticism, you’re golden!

Well, it’s something, I guess (?).

Taking the cue from Shelomit..
I don’t know how many people here have watched Janbaaz, but I did recently and it’s gloriously insane. Dimple, Sridevi, Rekha are at their hottest ever and then there’s Anil and Feroz Khan. The scenes set in a dance/sex club/bar/drug den, an awesomely trippy Rekha song, detailed psychedelic depictions of effects of heroin/cocaine, minutes-long scene of Sridevi dying/dancing from drugs, Anil cosplaying a cowboy in all his hairy glory, Amrish Puri not playing a villain yet being more creepy than in his villainous roles, stable sex and what not! I want to suggest it for a watchalong.

Omg yes, I’ve never taken acid but surely it can’t be any better/more eyesearing than “Janbaaz.” It’s CRIMINAL that “Pyar Do Pyar Lo” does not seem to be on YouTube with the picturization ) :

I don’t actually know what the words to this song are, but now I’m worried Margaret is going to be hanging out in a lodge with a terrorist.

It is just a cute tongue twister song, in a lodge, with snow – I expect all that except for the terrorist

I did. It had a very hypnotic quality to it. It reminded me of some of Rahul Batra’s stuff, which then made me wonder if Shakun Batra and Rahul Batra were related. I looked it up but couldn’t find anything that said they were. How about you?

Liked it a lot. And I already had high expectations! Naseer even managed to make me cry, which I wasn’t expecting! Who is Rahul Batra though?

Sorry. I meant to say Ritesh Batra. The director of Lunchbox and Photograph. When I was referring to the hypnotic quality of his movies, I was actually thinking of his American movie, Our Souls At Night. To me, there was something similar about that movie and Gehraiyaan even though the subjects were completely different.

It did have a hypnotic quality, I think the imagery and sound also contribute to it. AFAIK, Shakun talks about Woody Allen being a major influence in general, and this one bears some similarities to one of his movies somewhat.

Also, I’m seeing excellent reviews for Badhai Do and really want to watch it. Alas, I’ll have to wait until it’s streaming. If anyone has a chance to watch it in theaters, let us know your thoughts!
