Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani Trailers!!!!!

Happy 4th of July!!!! To celebrate, we have TWO Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani trailers! And some clue as to the plot.

First, the love song! Classic Kashmir love song, looks like probably a work trip set-up (Alia is holding a microphone), and then they realize they are in love. I’m a little confused by how distressed Alia looks right at the end when they are embracing, although I also love the Silsila homage with her walking through the woods at the end. Looks like Alia is going to be the protagonist, the one with the secret that makes love impossible and blah blah. Very cool, especially compared with Karan’s last film in which Ranbir was the end all be all.

And then we get the trailer! It’s a fun trailer that also lays out most of the plot of the film. Which makes me think it’s maybe a trick? We THINK we are getting the whole plot, but there’s another layer we aren’t seeing. We get a pretty silly plot really, fast-talking over the top Punjabi boy meets proper intelligent Bengali girl, they fall in love, and to get the two very different families to agree, they decide to swap households for 3 months.

But why all the crying? Why Alia’s look of distress during the love song? Why the “Honor of the Family” kind of dialogue? This plot is more of a happy rom-com plot, not a family melodrama. So I’m thinking, we are missing something. Karan is holding one more twist for the movie itself. Could be anything from “Alia swore to the Goddess not to marry without her family’s blessing” to “Ranveer’s grandfather loved and betrayed Alia’s Grandma”.

What do you think? Oh, and yes, I will be doing my darnedest to see it first day first show!

  3. First off, I didn’t like that they showed the song as a montage, so I didn’t get a feel of a story from it. From what is shown, I feel like it is Alia’s fantasy, Ranveer is not there. They cut out an entire verse sung by Shreya so I think it will play out differently in the film. Alia’s distressed look struck me too. I think I can watch the movie just for Alia’s costumes though, her styling is gorgeous.

Yeah there are definitely things which are not being shown in the trailer, as it should be. I’m completely sold on Ranveer’s shenanigans, maybe they didn’t show Alia’s time with his family because that’s where the serious problem arises? Gotta say, those single lines of dialogue from Dharmendra and Jaya B made me tear up and sent chills down my spine, respectively.

    • Maybe the contrast will be Ranveer dealing with “normal” issues with Alia’s family (cultural differences, language misunderstandings, etc.) and Alia dealing with Super Drama in Ranveer’s household.

  4. I was a bit nervous with that first scene in the trailer, since it seemed a little forced and OTT but by the end I was reassured that it would be all OK. I’m not the biggest fan of Ranveer as Ranveer IRL, but the opposites attract and the switch conceit could work. I immediately thought 2 States on volume 11 and I think this will be very fun. I think my favorite part was mean Jaya motioning to Alia to fix her head covering. I think the showdown between Jaya and Alia will be the most fun.

I like the first song, but I’m not sure it was smart to release it first. Karan had talked about the filming of it in interviews way back and it would have been nice to keep the tease going a bit longer. Styling looked fine to me despite the criticism…it was all coats and chiffon and right on the nose.

    • If the theory that the song is just Alia’s fantasy is true, it might be the best song to release? The least spoiler-y that is, just a traditional romantic love song.

    • Hi, Filmilibrarian! I meant to comment on this a few days ago but got distracted with real life. I had the same thought you did about this film looking like 2 states on steroids! I would be so curious to get your opinion of the movie given your apprehension towards Ranveer. If he manages to impress you, he has truly succeeded!

Also, have you seen any fun movies recently? I was waiting for PS-2 to come out before I watched PS-1 so my next goal is to watch both movies at some point.

      • Hi filmikudhi!

I do actually really like Ranveer on-screen, but I feel like lately he’s gone way too campy in his performances/role selections in addition to his off-screen persona. I think he’s one of the few actors where I’ve anticipated every one of his films and enjoyed all of them at some level up until Cirkus which I can’t even get through ten minutes of and I’ve tried. My faves of his are probably BBB, Befikre, Ram Leela, Lootera, DDD, Gully Boy, and Simmba.

This role as Rocky definitely isn’t anything new in the rom-com space for him either it seems. In BBB, Ladies Vs. Ricky B., Ram-Leela, and Befikre he had this manic somewhat juvenile energy, too. So I’m hoping that the conflict in the plot here allows him to actually do serious drama in addition to the silliness we see in the trailer. I keep reminding myself that we’ve literally only seen about five minutes of 2 and a half hour film at this point! And I do like what I’ve seen so far overall. Jaya, I predict, will steal the show.

I have been struggling to find Indian films and series that I want to watch lately…but I tend not to watch anything but youtube videos and read lately. I did watch Almost Pyaar with DJ Mohabbet the other day and I really liked it (though it’s sad). I may be one of the few who really like when Kashyup plays with the conventions of the romance genre. Here there’s an intriguing twist at the end of a predictable tragic tale. (Also Karah Mehta is definitely a find and I like how they wrote in his German upbringing in the script). Alaya F. is one of my favorites of the younger actresses.

All the movies that I have to watch on my Netflix and Amazon queues are too depressing or serious or ridiculous like Cirkus which I tried but couldn’t get into. I did watch the rest of the second season of Delhi Crime. Great performances by Shefali, Tillotama, and Rasika, but too dark for me and I may not want to even try the next season. I did just resign up for Einthusan so I could watch Bloody Daddy and Vikram Vedha finally. I really hate that JioCinema doesn’t work in the US unless you use a VPN which I refuse to do.

I’ve also been putting off watching PS-2. I saw PS-1 in theaters but need to rewatch it before watching the sequel since the subtitles were bad in the theater version for me.

And finally, I did also rewatch Zindagi Na Milenge Dobara the other day. Just turned it on randomly in the background one day and then I just sat and watched it with no distractions. It’s such a beautiful movie with such polished storytelling and all three leads and Katrina are so good in it, even the Spanish actress was charming! And Kalki, of course. Made me remember for a few hours why I love Hindi cinema so much!

So that’s my long-winded answer to your hello:)

        • First of, I love your long responses! They always have great analysis and tidbits.

Ranveer definitely plays the male “manic pixie dream girl” in many of his movies. Although, I do adore him in real life. However, I think his real life persona is only really shown through Deepika and on rare occasions. He and Varun have a very fictionalized star persona and a very different “at home” persona. But I love what Deepika has to say about him and how she is when she’s with him. And on those rare occasions where Ranveer tones down the act, you see how incredibly astute and caring he is.

I have been having a hard time finding any fun Indian movies to watch also. Oh oh, if you like action movies and of course Ajay and Tabu, I recommend Bholaa. I watched it based on Geneveive’s recommendation and it was really good. Also, you may have already seen this, but I also rewatched Satyamava Jayate 2 again and I absolutely adore that movie for many many reasons including how it draws the “Indian bros” in by seemingly being jingonistic and then turns it all on its head. It just such a fantastic mirror to the current politics in India. It is also a total throwback to old Amitabh triple role, over-the-top action movies and I love those.

Zindagi Na Milenge Dobara is such a fantastic movie. I could watch it over and over again. Everyone is so good in it. I trust anything that is written and directed by Zoya and/or Reema. I can’t wait for the Archies, and was excited to see the coming soon Made in Heaven announcement that just came out yesterday!

          • I like your analysis, too!

I did not know about the Made In Heaven announcement! That may be the most eagerly awaited second season of all time.

I’m very intrigued by your praise for Satyamava Jayate 2…I didn’t watch the first one because I thought it would be too jingoistic and that it would deal with Indian politics which I wouldn’t understand. But maybe this one is worth the try? I do love Ajay and Tabu, so I will put Bholaa back on my list based on your recommendation. I’m not on Twitter anymore, so I’m missing some of the word of mouth buzz but I thought it didn’t do that well, so haven’t sought it out. I will now.

I think you are probably right about Ranveer’s private persona with Deepika vs. his interview and public appearance persona. He definitely seems like a fun and caring guy. I think I worry about him more than anything. He seems like he may burnout at some point and/or crash hard because maintaining that much energy must be a lot. Hopefully Deepika keeps him grounded. I also think he must have been drawing a lot from his own experiences with his in-laws for this new role;) I know they’re not Bengali, but my impression is that Deepika’s family is also a bit more “subdued” compared to Ranveer.

        • Sorry. Forgot two more things. I agree with you regarding Alaya F. She is one of my favorites as well and I hope to see her in more movies. I just hope she can balance commercial films with indie ones. I really don’t want her typecasted.

Also, Vikram Vedha was fine. But I’m going to be honest in the most superficial way, I just want Hrithik back in straight-up “hot” roles! Hrithik does such a fantastic job flirting with the camera and I like that recently he started acting his age and showing off his greys in films. I need more sexy Hrithik in my life! 🙂

          • I’ve been surprised that Alaya F. hasn’t received more attention. I thought her debut in that Saif film was charming. I think her career will slowly but steadily build.

I totally agree about Hrithik in “hot” roles…lol! I also like that he’s embraced his age in some ways. That’s really one of the reasons I want to see Vikram Vedha since he looks so good in that gangster avatar (at least to me). So you thought he was hot in that one, right? think he may have actually looked his best in Agneepath. Saif (who also looks good in VV) and Hrithik in the same film going head to head was catnip for me when it was announced (my two original Hindi “boyfriends”!), but I’ve lost the momentum to watch it because of the long wait to streaming.

I think Hrithik’s going to look good in Fighter, too, since he’ll probably be in military and flight suits. They are definitely going to capitalize on his War look there.

I’m also kind of charmed by the possibility of his IRL marriage plans with his new girlfriend. She seems like a quirky and down to earth kind of match for him.

          • Hrithik looked really good in Agneepath. He looks okay in Vikram Vedha. I really liked him better in the earlier scenes with a little facial hair and gangster look. I wasn’t a fan of the overgrown hair and bread towards the end though. Saif looks really good and the chemistry between Said and Radhika Apte was sizzling. I thought there were a couple of seriously sexy scenes between them. Plus, I just love dual hero movies and Said and Hrithik did an amazing job playing off each other. I recommend watching it. I do think Hrithik will look good in Fighter. I am looking forward to it. And yes, I really like his girlfriend too. She seems a bit bohemian and artsy, which seems like a good foil for Hrithik.

  5. YAY!!! I’m so glad you will watch the first day, first show! In that case, I’ll hold off on watching it until Saturday l so I can read your review!

Karan definitely has some twists and turns left for the actual movie. There has to be some connection between Shabana and Jaya, right?! I remember reading some rumors a long time ago that Jaya would be the main antagonist and that seems on point to me. It feels like she’ll play an Amitabh-esq character from K3G. I thought it would be similar to Kabhi Kabhi where Dharmendra was in love with Jaya but ended up marrying Shabana or the other way around, but maybe not?

  6. I’m very excited for the movie as it looks deeper and more layered than it really is. I have a feeling that the family conflict is hidden for a reason since it’s the heart of the movie. Though I just keep thinking how Rani would’ve been in this role. For one, she actually is Bengali and has the energy that Alia is trying to replicate. Though I believe Alia will do a good job. 2000’s Rani was something else entirely!

  8. Wanted to say that the actors playing Alia’s parents, Churni Ganguli and Tota Roy Chowdhury, are well known Bengali actors. It was an adjustment for me to see Tota as this bumbling dad figure (which he’s doing very well) as I’ve known him as a masculine leading man. He was in Chokher Bali with Aishwarya and I love this short film –
