Wednesday Watching Post: What Are You Watching and Reading and Thinking and Listening to THE DAY BEFORE JAWAN COMES OUT????

Happy day before Jawan!!!! Or possibly day of Jawan in some places? But I’ve been burned before with the whole “time zone lets you see it early” philosophy. Sometimes the show is canceled after you buy tickets, sometimes you show up at the theater and they say “yeah, we can’t show it yet”. This is what I am telling myself so I don’t get super jealous!!!!

I’ll start!

Watching: I am finally watching Star Trek: Enterprise in my quest to watch all Star Trek serieses. It’s……not good. But also sort of perfect for having on in the background while I do other things.

Reading: Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner are getting divorced! People magazine seems to expect me to be way more upset about this than I actually am. However, I am super curious if this will have an effect on PC and Nick! The Jonas brother sold this whole “all happily married all together” storyline, is it going to turn into “all divorced”? Or are they actually separate people whose relationships will react differently to challenges?

Thinking: Jawan Jawan Jawan!!!! Stressed about seeing it tomorrow during a work day and all those complications, but I’ve already made plans to watch it again with friends on Friday night. So THAT will be my “just watch and enjoy” experience, even if Thursday is stressful and rushed.

Listening: Jawan Jawan Jawan!

  2. There will be 2 shows of Jawan in Catania and I can’t stay calm, even if deep inside I’m scared to be too excited. After Pathaan fiasco I’m afraid something will happen last minute.

  3. I’m planning to see it here in Philly if I can this weekend with my movie buddy. But this one she thinks her teenage daughter won’t like as much because it’s “too violent.” But the daughter enjoyed Pathan with us and it was thanks to her that we went to see Rocky aur Rani in the theaters. I wanted to go but our dates weren’t adding up and they have the car. But the daughter’s high school friends were hyping it up so we got to go a few weeks into the release. My friend (who was born and raised in Gujurat) is so happy her daughter is so into Indian things right now:)

Hoping Jawan is showing closer than Rocky aur Rani was though. Haven’t looked yet.

Randomly rewatched Lukka Chuppi the other day. Just needed a background rom-com and wanted to confirm that I might actually enjoy Karthik in at least two of his movies to date, but that’s it! Kriti is just so fun in it. And Pankaj does have a very silly role in this one and chews the scenery.

Also rewatched Fidaa last night. Like everyone else, I am so charmed by Sai Pallavi! Varun Tej is apparently doing a Hindi romance this year. He’s definitley pretty and has the potential to be directed into a good acting performance I think? Haven’t seen much else of his work. Why can’t Sai only do roles like this…no more thrillers or horror or “serious” movies (though Kali was pretty good!). I feel like she doesn’t have enough rom-coms in her filmography yet! This one is the most rom-com I think? I would love to have her debut in a Hindi rom-com and basically play herself…someone with a very wholesome vibe that is thrown into a fish out of water scenario with a bad boy hero (maybe Ranbir? maybe Ranveer? maybe Shahid?…someone at least who can match her acting skills).

I guess I’m in rewatching rom-com mode. Getting over my first(!) bout of COVID and thought it was super mild…I still need to just hermit and watch movies and cross stitch lately.

    • Oooh, I would love to see Sai dance with Shahid or Ranveer. Not so much Ranbir, feel like she’s had enough movies where she’s paired with a less mature man child or a dominant hero type. It would be amazing to see her in a mature romance of equals.

Hope you feel better and get to see Jawan!

  5. Watching Enterprise… If I recall it definitely gets much better as things move along, DS9 was like that too. Keep in mind Enterprise came at a very odd time when the direction of the ST franchise was being questioned post GR’s passing (if I’ve got the timeline right). This is why there’s no mention of ST in the opening titles and the song seems a bit meh compared to the more triumphant stylings of other themes. The studio was trying to do “their” show vs. Gene’s. The show grew on me once I gave it a chance (so did the theme song) and I really enjoyed it. Check out the docuseries “The Center Seat” which goes through most of the STverse behind the scenes for context. Just know it has a lot of spoilers.

    • Oooo, thank you! I’ve gotten through TOS, TNG, VOY, SNW, and all but the last 8 episodes of DS9 (watching it with my housemate so we have to go on her availability). Also all but the last 6 episodes of Disco, which I don’t like very much but still feel obligated to watch.

  7. I watched a not very good Netflix Romance staring PC! No one needs to see it BUT there is an extended scene towards the beginning where she tries internet dating and meets her actual husband at a diner and he acts like a total ass. It is pretty good. It made me like them as a couple, or at least not actively dislike them.

I ended up watching the PC romance because I wanted a cheesy romance that I didn’t have to pay too much attention to, and I was looking at Hallmark options and all the women looked like they were in a sorority and never changed their style 10 years later. They all had straight hair past their shoulder, narrow faces, pointy noses, and while skin color changed, clothing styles did not. And the men all looked like models without personality. So I went over to Netflix which I have to say does a good job of picking interesting women to star in their romances, and PC was interesting. She didn’t look like all the other ex-sorority women. And she acted well, even if the movie as a whole was blah. True to form she did not have chemistry with her costar.

  8. Just got back home last night from 2 1/2 weeks away. Back to work today, amazed my brain is functioning (mostly) coming back from a 6 hour time difference. The kids start school tomorrow, two half days now because of the heat wave. It’s a big week. However! I just checked our local theater expecting Jawan to be sold out all weekend and at this point there are still seats open for some Saturday showings. Meaning if I can get organized fast enough I might get to see it opening weekend. No FDFS for me like the rest of the cool kids but that would make me happy. It’s at the mall 15 minutes from my house and they’ve booked a bunch of showtimes so I really have no excuse.

Reading: over vacation I read the first book of Tale of Genji, I happened to pick it up at a used bookstore a few months ago and it met my vacation criteria of small, light paperback that I needed brain space to read. Curious if anyone else has read it? Miss Braganza? It’s really old and the plot and characters work differently than we’re used to. I also found myself fighting with aspects of the character and story as I read. But I can’t stop thinking about it, I went and read a synopsis of the rest of the books to find out what happened and it made me deeply curious to understand more about the world where it’s set. (Like, to your cousins post, I didn’t realize until afterward how many of his objects of seduction were near neighbors on the family tree. Also there’s an obvious tension between female standards of modesty and Genji’s hijinks, since most of the book is a series of liaisons. But then, the author is a woman, so what does that mean about male/female gaze?) Thinking about watching one of the movie or TV adaptations to see how they show the settings and the hair and the beautiful clothes.

I feel like you’ve mentioned this before, but which Star Trek do you think holds up best, say to watch with the young people?

    • I’ve read the whole thing twice, for two different Japanese literature classes. It’s so interesting to read about the world that’s so different from ours, where women had all these affairs and yet literally couldn’t be seen by other people or go outside their houses. You do get a little tired of all of the descriptions of kimonos though. It doesn’t really have a “plot” like we’re used to, so a lot of the story doesn’t resolve.

      • The normal show is about as sanitized and quiet as the show in the busy Cinema in the silicon valley. I’m so glad I went to the fan club celebration. Otherwise this would have been completely worthless for my travel.
I bet you will have a better experience in the Indian Cinema in Chicago!!!!
        Hang in there!!!! ♥️♥️

          • I left this sanitized show after interval. Super sleepy and tired. I booked myself a ticket at Gaiety cinemas tomorrow afternoon to experience the pandemonium once again. The number of commercials at PVR was beyond ridiculous. Such a late finish to the movie, I couldn’t take it and left.

            5 friends sounds amazing!!!

  10. I’m back in the US after a long trip–about as smooth as it gets, but still long. I’m still a bit foggy and not sure what’s going on.

But, importantly, I was able to see Pathaan last week in the big IMAX theater, although it was also a long journey. I intended to go on Thursday but we had typhoon-level rain, so instead I ran back and forth between the bus center and the train center trying to find a way to get to the theater two hours away. No dice, so was not able to see first day first show (in Japan). However, the weather was nice the next day, so I took a train to the big city and stayed overnight, and then went to the theater the next day to see it. No Desis at that particular show, so no applause or anything, but I did overhear an elderly couple talking about how much they had enjoyed it. It was completely worth all the trouble for me and, as is customary in Japanese theaters, I got a free postcard and movie poster. I did have a bit of trouble following it so looking forward to seeing it again with English subtitles.

In other watching news, I finished Kohrra and the new season of Delhi Crime. Kohrra is a bit difficult to watch, since it includes both casual police brutality and domestic violence, and it gets pretty dark. But Kohrra has something I also appreciated in Badlapur: the violence has a reckoning. It doesn’t happen for its own sake, it shows the effects on the victims (two scenes of grown men crying after having been beaten up), and the people inflicting it have to come to terms with what they’ve done. Difficult to watch, but the very good mystery kept me going. Fun fact: The woman who was the British woman in Lagaan has a role in this! Delhi Crime is much less dark, and had Tillotama Shome in it. Unfortunately they’ve reduced scenes of Shefali’s family, which I really liked, but kept the warm workplace support amongst the pressure.

  11. The Jonas Brothers are all on their own marriage journeys, I think. Joe and Sophie were the last of them to get married. Kevin and his wife have been married for over ten years. I’m sure there’s a reason why Joe and Sophie ended it, but all the headlines and jokes about it make me really upset.

Also seeing Jawan in t-minus two hours. See y’all on the other side.

  12. I know everybody is busy watching Jawan, but few days ago I saw a movie I must warn you about. Telugu movie Baby. It was a huge hit, and made a lot of money, but at the same time a lot of people hated it completely. And it’s love triangle so I knew I must watch it and form my own opinion. Well, I hated it. It’s one of those movies that take stupid, immature and trashy men and instead of say “yeah those guys are bad”, it shows them not only as good, but as the victims.
    Spoilers!
The first “hero” is a 10th standart dropout rikshawala, who doesn’t like the fact that his girlfriend changed when she started college. He calls her a prostitute because she started using make-up.

The second is a rich heartthrob who falls in love with the heroine and starts love bombing her with gifts and stuff even if she cleary tells him she is not interested. 2 and half painful and slow hours later, the heroine, under pressure from both men, does something wrong, and of course the movie, and the men quickly judge her, call her the worst names and cry because they have been deceived.
What a trashy movie! Don’t watch.
