An afternoon watchalong! Radical! And Dil To Pagal Hai, a movie I find dull, but SRK is charming and the songs are okay, so I will survive.
Dil To Pagal Hai
It’s on Prime, and available for rent at all the places. My second least favorite Madhuri-SRK collaberation (Koyla, Anjaam, Gaja Gamini, Hum Tumhare Hain Sanam, Dil To Pagal Hai, Devdas), but undeniably a hit and important in the great Shahrukh Khan story.

At 4pm Chicago time, I will put up an “And PLAY!” comment and then we will all comment along from there.
Howdy : )

I got popcorn and water and am ready! Oh, and this afternoon I discovered that I am 180 pages into the WRONG scarlet pimpernel book! I accidentally am reading one that isn’t the first one! That is what I get for buying used.

Oh no! Well, as you can see, it is a very easy read so you should be able to finish the RIGHT one pretty quickly after you start it.

Okay, I forgot this opening, it is pretty cool with the talking heads. But already Madhuri feels about 10 years older than SRK. Even though I know they are the same age, he just comes off young and she comes off mature.

I was just going to say so! It is like they open by showing you how ill suited they are for eachother, and then throughout the film, they fail to convince me their opening sequence was wrong! It is like SRK is pursuing his mother.

I wonder if they went for dancer over actor for the best friend role if I it would have made the whole scenario more believable for me. I mean just thinking that SRK and Karisma are these amazing dancers is hard to swallow.

And then I think would it fly if Juhi were in the role, but then Juhi was never an amazing dancer either.

Madhuri’s matronly vibe is super strong. Even in the photos of her when she was a 15 year old baby she looked mom-like.

I wondered about that! It was scandalous to me watching, but my American Desi friends said it was normal.

Maybe for American Desis… completely not. Constant mumbling in the movie… scandalized. For me I don’t even find them pretty or suiting madhuri so it is annoying

Mostly I find them more weird than sexy, but Karisma’s thing here of translucent blouse over patterned chola is pretty fetching.

I don’t think Karisma is necessarily the most skillful actress, but she is always giving it 100%. That effort really pays off in roles like this where she’s meant to be the “boring” girl or otherwise not whom you’re rooting for.

Have you noticed how often SRK is grabbing Karisma and she is making an “ouch” sound? I think it’s supposed to just be “he treats her like one of the boys”, but Karisma gives such a vibe of delicacy, and since she never hits back, it has an interesting undertone of “he doesn’t realize how fragile she is and how much power he has over her.” I think that’s one thing this movie does really well, Shahrukh realizing Karisma loves him and worrying about that, without leaping to marrying her or doing anything, just feeling responsible.

It seems to me like a cousins type of vibe…. definitely not him even seeing her as a woman / girl

Yes, absolutely! This is one of the earliest roles where I felt that “sexy tap on/off” talent. He can play totally unsexy with a costar just as easily as sexy, and that is HARD. Jawan, Chak De, with Kareena in K3G, and with Karisma here, you believed his character absolutely did not see the women around him as sexual.

IF SRK is choreographing these in studio rain dances he is a dreadful choreographer.

SRK is really good at the dancing in this song. Because it’s the sort of “conversation and acting while dancing” stuff that he does really well. The “I am a precise choreography genius stuff”, not sure if I buy that.
