Weekend WatchAlong: The Archies! 6pm Chicago Time! Some Nice Nostalgia for a December Evening

Happy Saturday! Time for a nice watchalong with some nice nostalgia, for those of us who grew up reading Archie comics.

The Archies

On Netflix, beautiful looking, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy music, and Zoya direction, couldn’t be bettered.

At 6pm Chicago time, I will put up an “And PLAY” comment and we will all comment along from there!

  2. Yknow part of the promotions for Archies over here was a huge poster with stickers on the newspapers. All the usual Archies comics stuff. The milkshakes and burgers, the skates, and the Archies band but with the cartoon versions of the actors. My daughter took that and stuck the stickers all over the wall πŸ˜„

  3. If you started late, Riverdale is an Anglo-Indian small town with a few loyal long term residents. The heart of the town is Green Park, where every resident plants a tree when they turn 5. Archie has a band, The Lodges just moved back and Veronica has rollar skates. That’s basically it.

  4. I love this as an intro for Suhana to film! She has gotten so much grief over the past few years every time she wears a short dress or a bikini or ANYTHING, and her she is just happily owning it, being young and free and sexy.

    • And I like the sequence before it too where she’s discussing “cute” vs “sexy” with Betty. She wears the cute dress, then says “no, I don’t WANT to be cute”.

  6. Reggie’s Dad, who gave the speech about the responsibility, is played by another multi-generation Anglo-Indian. Totally on purpose to give him the speech about the culture.

  7. Ok I love the structure of this song! You have the typical romantic lines from the couple but the side couples are commenting with what they’re actually thinking.

  8. I’m really enjoying the way English everything is woven in to their lives. The lyrics and dialogue are all half and half and their lifestyles are too. Indian culture runs so far away from acknowledging the Anglo Indian community, and at the same time so fast towards learning English now.

    • Absolutely, and I can absolutely see it for a community localized into one hill station (since hill stations could be a bit apart from mainlands and have strong localized cultures) and I can absolutely see that anything outside of that culture is a smaller part of the subculture there, not as largely acknowledged. So you have Shammi Kapoor, Betty’s dad listening to a Hindi song etc…there’s some level of acknowledgement but it won’t be too obvious and you have to look for it
